2 The Little Sulk II Surface Portrait grade 24 x 30 portrait grade canvas. Transfer Information Transfer the design to the surface with gray graphite. Coat the graphite with varnish such as Final Coat.Coat the surface with the varnish any time the paint feels grabby. Palette Set up and mixing The original piece was painted with Genesis Heat Set Oils. There is a conversion chart included if you care to use traditional oils. TW: Titanium White Y: Genesis Yellow R: Genesis Red O: Orange (or mix R + Y) QC: Quinacridone Crimson UB: Ultramarine Blue RS: Raw Sienna BU: Burnt Umber RU: Raw Umber or BU + Blk BS: Burnt Sienna (optional) Blk: Mars or Carbon Black PB: Phthalo Blue 01 Optional Grays: Values of Gray Mona Lisa Paint Thinner Mixes: WW TW + a very small amount of Y Abbreviation Archival Winsor & Newton Genesis Mixing Formulas Formulae for mixing is given throughout this lesson. You will find that the mixes for the hue are given first. This is followed by a colour that will raise or lower the value. Once the value and colour are mixed, the next addition usually is meant to either brighten or dull the colour. Finally, a colour may need to be mixed into the pile that will adjust the temperature. 3 Sepia/Bistre Underpainting Review sepia underpainting segment on the video as this is your best reference. It will help train your eye. Start with a white, primed canvas. Thin a mixture of BU + a small amount of Black or Raw Umber with Paint Thinner. It should be thin enough that you can draw on the canvas. Paint in the dark sections of the canvas. If a section becomes too dark, load a brush with Paint Thinner and scrub out the light sections. Wash the flesh sections in with a very light value. This is the lightest section of the entire piece. Darken the outside edges of the arms and each finger and palm. Add a dark value in the eye sockets, under the chin, and nostril opening. Add a darker value to define the cheek/nose area. The painting must be dry prior to moving to the next stage. Low Dk After Bouguereau: The Little Sulk II (page 3)
4 Stage Two: Color Wash Wash each object with the colors listed. This is a transparent layer so as to begin to bring the objects to their local color. Thin each color with paint thinner so that the sepia underpainting glows through. Wash the onions, wine bottle with Y + UB Wash the flesh tones with TW + R + Y + RS Wash the container, book with UB or Grey Wash the apple with R, Y Wash the hair, skirt, basekt with RS Wash the background, bread with BU After Bouguereau: The Little Sulk II (page 4)
5 Mixing Flesh Tones (see separate DVD for mixing) Block in the face and handswith the flesh tones without blending as shown on the the video and photos.use a soft brush to create a smooth appearance. Block out the sepia tones underneath. Ignore details such as the eyes, mouth, nostrils, etc.all sections will be reinforced when dry. The three light values will be used in different areas of the face. The lightest light value will be used in the lightest section of the face. The slightly darker light will be placed in a mid-value tone area. The darkest of the light values are reserved for the shadowy areas. The same theory applies to the different rows of medium and dark values. 7 Still Life on Right Still Life on Left Base in basket with RS. Shade with BU. Add lights with TW + RS or TW + Y. Base apple with R on left. Shade with QC. Base with Y on right. Base wine bottle with UB + RS + Y. Add highlights with WW. Show apple through bottle with Y. Base cloth with W + UB. Shade with gray from shirt scale. Base crust of bread and cork with BU + RS. Shade with BU. Add lights with TW + RS. Add top of bread with TW + RS. Shade with BU. Base book cover in with UB + RS +TW. Shade with Blk. Add lights with gray from shirt scale. Mix the following scale for the ladle. Place as indicated on video Medium: Y + RS Light: Medium + Y Dark: Medium + RS + BU Low Dark: Dark + BU Mix the following scale for the container. Place as indicated on video Medium: TW + Blk + RS Light: Medium + TW Dark: Medium +Blk Low Dark: Dark + Blk After Bouguereau: The Little Sulk II (page 7)
8 Background Paint the background using photo as guide. The background is BU + Blk. The foreground is TW + RS. Plan on painting the background a few times to get it dark enough. The cabinet is painted with BU + R. Add RS + TW on the leading edge or corner of the cabinet to create the illusion of an edge. Still Life on Right Mix the following scale for the green section on the onions. Place as indicated on video Medium: Y + UB + TW Light: Medium + TW Dark: Medium + Blk Base top of pedestal with TW + RS. After Bouguereau: The Little Sulk II (page 8)
9 Value 8 Shirt Create a value scale of gray with TW + Blk. Base coat the shirt with TW + UB. Add dark values as indicated on the video and photo reference. Value 7 Value 6 Value 5 Skirt Base coat the skirt and pinafore with RS. Highlight with WW. Shade with BU, BU + Blk. Add highlights of gray tones from shirt. 10 EYES: Add Iris with BU + RS. Add pupil and rim the iris with Black. Add the white of the eyes with light gray tone. Add lash line with Black. Add dark flesh under the eye to create a lash ledge. With dark flesh, create folds under eyes and shadow next to the nose. MOUTH: Add shadow under bottom lip and corners of the mouth with dark flesh. Add actual lips with R + Y. Shade between lips with QC. Shade top lip with QC to make slightly darker than lower lip. Add a highlight with TW + R. NOSE: Add nostrils with dark flesh. Add shadow under nose, side of nose and nose wings with dark also. Highlight with light flesh values. FLESH: Strengthen flesh tones by repeating initial flesh placement on hands, face and neck. 11 Hair Base the hair with RS. Add wisps onto the forehead with RS. Shade the perimeter and between curls with BU. Add highlight with YT (TW + Y). Add headband with Blk. Final Stage Shirt Add highlights with TW + a small amount of UB. Add reflected color of Medium Flesh tone. Strengthen dark values with Blk. Still Life Items Darken if necessary with Blk. Add shine with WW. Add reflected colors of R, RS. Hands and arms Strengthen lights and darks on the hands and arms. Glaze with RS if the flesh appears too pink. Add warmth with R dry brush between medium and dark values. Shadow The shadow work has to be very dark. The feet should not be apparent nor should the left side of the cabinet or the right side of the skirt. Glaxe these areas as many times as necessary to create the dark appearance.add cast shadows under the still life objects. Skirt Add lights dancing across the front of the skirt where the light is catching the folds. Use YT. Varnish Varnish with Final Coat Varnish over either oils or Genesis Heat Set oils.
