1 WATERMARKS: November 2016 The Newsletter for Central Minnesota Watercolorists Our presenter for November is Peggy Hall. Peggy was kind enough to reschedule her demonstration and we can t wait to see her innovative techniques. Be at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Studio C on Nov. 14th at 6 pm. Bonnie Schwichtenberg Presidents Message from Kerry Kupferschmidt November looks to be a busy month for our watercolor CMW members. We began with two sites for exhibiting art. Rivers Edge Convention Center is an excellent site for larger work and perhaps some new winter scenes. We ll be able to see images of that exhibit soon. The first ever $50 Sale proved to be a challenging but worthwhile endeavor. Thanks to ALL those who chose to bring their work. There was a flurry of activity making room for all the pieces delivered. I was impressed with the quality of the mostly smaller scale paintings. Many of you included frames with original art. The dilemma of presenting quality work at a bargain price was solved in many creative ways. We had sold nine pieces of art when I last checked. I really appreciate the effort put in by our board and our members to make a successful sale! Bonnie Schwichtenberg and Anita Hendrickx were vital to the cause with signage and display set up. Robyn York and several others kept sales going smoothly. Many contributed by encouraging customers. We had a very good turnout! I am sure we will have much feedback on improving the next sale, but it was a very good first effort at this venue. Be sure to come to our next meeting November 14 th! Our demonstrator will be Peggy Hall. She works in mixed media in a range of subjects, employing added textures for interest. 2 weather for an excuse not to attend, if our balmy November weather continues. Please start thinking of card ideas for our December 12 th meeting. Remember, original art at card scale. It is a challenge for me, but many relish the idea. Well, my quote this month is from an excellent book I am reading about Claude Monet. Mad Enchantment by Ross King has given me a new appreciation for the challenges of an aging artist s struggle to deal with maintaining creative energy. He was 75 years old when he started his most ambitious project of his lifetime, his largescale Water Lilies paintings. These landscapes of water and reflections have become an obsession he wrote to a friend in And yet it seemed to fuel his energy. He eventually painted better than 30 large scale Water Lillie paintings, many infused with intense color and energy. Great encouragement for those of us challenged by age and health issues. Keep those paintings coming! Kerry CALENDAR NOV. 14, 2016 CMW NOV. MEETING. Paramount Center for the Arts, Studio C, at 6:00 pm social, 6:20 meeting, and 6:40 demonstration. Peggy Hall will guide us through her journey with mixed media. Her work varies from easily recognizable images to abstract representational ideas. She uses texture and form to convey her message to the viewer. You can see Peggy s work at DEC. 12, 2016 CMW DEC. MEETING Paramount Visual Arts Center at 6:00 pm. Our annual time to exchange an original card with each other and share holiday treats. Come for a relaxing and deliciously fun evening of friendship and good food. Happy Holidays to all. Bring a treat to share. DEC. 19, 2016 Takedown at RiversEdge Convention Center 4-5 pm WE GENERALLY DO NOT HAVE A JANUARY MEETING. Feb. 1-Feb. 28, 2016 Waite Park Library Exhibit. 11 paintings that are 16 x 20 or near that will be accepted. Cost $5. Hanging Feb. 1, 2016, 4-5pm; takedown Feb. 28, pm. Contact Yvonne Schrank at or schrank@prodigy.net. FEB. 13, 2016 CMW PRESIDENT S CHALLENGE: Our illustrious President, Kerry Kupferschmidt, will give us a theme and invite us to bring a painting to share with our membership. This is as much fun as the card exchange. We show it, tell a little about it and then put it on a stand on the table for all to see at the end during refreshments. You don t have to bring one but you will enjoy it more if you do.
3 CALENDAR cont d. CMW Campfire Bay painting Retreat, March 9-12 We will return to CampFire Bay Resort for our 2nd Painting Retreat. Our leaders have calculated all the fees and they feel confident the 4 days and 3 nights will be very close to $ per person based on a 6 person minimum participation. That will include your room, taxes and the $5 studio fee. For those of you who have never been, the cabin is big with 2 flat screen tvs and dvds, two complete modern kitchens, and it sleeps 12. However we prefer 8 if possible. Then, each person gets their own bed. With 10, two have to use a futons, with 12 beds are shared. We would likely get another cabin before doing that. Last year we all brought food and ate like Kings! So well we did not go out at all. The Studio is remarkable with great light, a super kitchen, with many, many, tables; the accommodations are REALLY clean. The beds are OK. Sign up if you are interested at the meeting on the 14th. Last day to pay the balance is Feb. 1, The board will set a date for interested painters to remit a nonrefundable deposit in December and contact all interested parties to commit. The Banner Painting Chalet in the Dolomite Mountains 5 years ago I started attending workshops with Rose Edin an excellent teacher. I am almost done finishing all the paintings I started in her three workshops I paint slowly. This was actually the first one I started with her 5 years ago. I AM SO GLAD TO ALMOST BE DONE!! I have one more; it is a full sheet! What was I thinking? Bonnie
5 Lian Quan Zhen s workshop using Chinese painting on Raw Schuan and Mature Schaun. Actually Schaun is a grass in China that is made into paper. It is also called rice paper. He taught us how to make simple strokes turn into animals and how to blend Chinese paint on the brush instead of the paper. We practiced a little and jumped into our first painting. Peonies. Then we got to try our skills. Next we worked on the Owl and after that the Landscape. Lastly we worked on an undersea scene with fish, coral, and sea creatures.
6 Here are a few of Lian s seascape skills we put into our seascapes. On Nov. 4 we organized The Best Ever $50 Art Sale! There were 12 sides of panels covered with original paintings with a bunch set up on shelves, on the floor and set up on chairs. The display was impressive to say the least. This was the Winter Art Crawl sponsored by the St. Cloud Downtown Business Association. Due to the magnificent weather there were hundreds of viewers. Take a look at our first attempt to do this. Mary Buhl and Linda Addicott were demonstrating that evening. Thanks to Anita Hendricks for the really professional posters. She designed them.
