She obtained a degree in studio art as they called it in the 70s, concentrating on drawing and design. She has worked in watercolor, but now enjoys pastel, loving the immediacy of the medium. She has taken a number of pastel workshops over the past ten years to improve her skills and learn new techniques. She focuses on her love of the landscape, and strives to interpret what she sees in a sensitive manner. I have taken several workshops from various artists including Ann Templeton, Doug Dawson, Ned Mueller, Lorenzo Chavez, Bob Rohm, Bill Hosner and Richard McKinley. Janis impressive collection of awards dates back to 2009 when she was chosen for the International Societies Convention Calendar (May), among other awards. She has also been an exhibitor at many events, including the Texas & Neighbors Regional Show, March - May, Irving, TX. Gallery representation includes The New Gallery in Dallas, Linus Gallery, Pasadena; and JRBArt, Oklahoma City. She was an exhibitor in the Plein Air Painters of New Mexico Juried Exhibition. 2 OCTOBER DEMONSTRATION Justin Burns - Acrylic We had a different kind of demonstration at our November 20th meeting. Usually, we have an artist demonstrating their own painting technique and style. This month, we had Justin Burns, a representative from Golden Artists Colors, Inc. The GOLDEN Acrylics lecture and demonstration is a fun informative, educational and fast-paced presentation of all the products GOLDEN has to offer. The lecture covers information about the different types of acrylic paints, mediums, gels, pastes and grounds. The lecture also covers a technical review of acrylics and their varied application possibilities, techniques in working with mixed media, printmaking, and the review of GOLDEN s newest products including OPEN acrylics, High Flow acrylics and QoR watercolor. This lecture gave us some new insights that can be added to our creative processes. All members received a free information packet, hand-painted color charts and a bag of free GOLDEN product samples to take home. Justin is an artist himself. His work focuses on spaces that are left as they are, weathered and abandoned fragments of a time once lived. His paintings have been exhibited in Dallas/Fort Worth and have been featured in publications such as Studio Visit Magazine and Friend of the Artist. 3 GETTING TO KNOW YOU Personal Art History of RCAS Members Cynthia Coldren I can t remember a time I didn t create art. My father would color side-by-side with me, and his modulated shading next to my naïve coloring was a wonderment to me and spurred me on over my childhood. In my teen years, I worked in oils and remember putting them in the water heater closet to speed up the drying! While I studied fine art in college, after two years I opted for a full-time job. I continued creating art but switched to soft pastels for my representational paintings. In 1981, I married and moved to Dallas. Over the next three-plus decades, I continued, ended and started several corporate and small business careers, completed my college degree and jointly raised two daughters (now grown). About five years ago, I realized my career in marketing communications was winding down. What was next? I needed to reconnect with my creative side and see if this was still my passion. Step by step, I reacquainted myself with foundational art studies, technical aspects, tools, mediums and styles. I made dozens of gallery visits, participated in art workshops and completed a lot of museum research excursions. Earlier this year (2018), it happened - I took the corporate severance and haven t looked back. I m happy to be a full-time artist! I blend paint, textural marks and collaged paper, adding and scraping away layers to create more organic compositions. My use of geometric shapes, lines and repeating patterns is a unifying thread through my art I like structure within abstraction, weaving the familiar with the ambiguous. I feel this joining of opposites speaks to the world we live in, and gives the viewer a point of connection with abstract art. During these years of discovery, I've transitioned to a non-objective abstract style using acrylic paints, inks and mediums on canvas and paper. My paintings are visual expressions of color, light and texture. I find inspiration in images of spare landscapes, urban structures and geographic patterns and frequently explore opposing concepts such as chaos and order, complexity and simplicity, or repetition and diversity. These studies become the understories for my abstract ideascapes.

6 Message From The President Mickey Archer New beginnings. Starting a new year always brings new beginnings for us. I m going to get an early start on my taxes; I m going to clean out the garage this weekend; I m going to enter more art exhibits this year. Well. Maybe it s a time to try something new with our art. Do you feel better about the day if you make the bed first thing? I know I will feel better if I stop long enough to clean up my studio. Maybe that s all I need to try the new inks, or take that class. If we don t challenge ourselves in our art, we become stagnant and bored and less interested in what got us up at 4:00AM to start that new painting. How about it?
