2 2 JUNE 20-30, 2013 SAGEBRUSH COMMUNITY ART CENTER SHERIDAN ART JUBILEE From the Executive Director Wow! What can I say; the last four months have been a whirlwind of creativity, growth, change and exciting events at the Sagebrush Art Center. I joined the Art Center the beginning of February and we have exploded with workshops, art camps, events for artist and the public and so much more. If you have not been to the Sagebrush Art Center at 201 East JODY SAUERS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 5th Street in Sheridan let me tell you a bit about it. SAGE (Sheridan Artist Guild Etal) was established over 40 years ago as a social and educational group for local artist, a little over two years ago SAGE, a non-profit 501c3 moved into the Historic Train Depot and began to develop the Sagebrush Art Center. The Art Center hopes to be one of the leaders for economic growth through the arts in the greater Sheridan Area. We have four art galleries that are run and supported with volunteer help; the Fine Art Gallery (to promote new & unique art from across the nation); the Members Gallery (for any member to promote and sell their works of art); and the Upstairs Gallery (usually Mary & Arthur Dailey s Photography) all in the Art Center. And, the SAGE Exhibit Gallery located in the Sheridan College on Main Street that is the educational gallery for first time artist to learn how to exhibit an entire show. We also have a variety of educational classes and workshops that run throughout the year. Each summer we bring in guest artist for weekend workshops and hold a summer art camp for the area youth. In the spring and fall we have art classes taught by Nancy Buening, Kathy Sabine, Jenny Worker and others. And, of course, we have the always popular Uncorked classes that run every 2nd & 4th Tuesday taught by Sonja Caywood. The Sagebrush Art Center is kicking off the first annual Sheridan Art Jubilee, a celebration of art, with workshops, art receptions, art tours, and art sales from June 20th thru June 30th throughout the Sheridan Area. I invite you to join or participate in as many as you can fit into your busy schedules. We are very lucky in Sheridan to be able to enjoy the creative people and events that surround us and make our lives a little bit better through their eyes Please, stop in and check out how much the Sagebrush Art Center has grown or better yet, join the art center for as little as $40 per year and we will do our best to keep you abreast of a variety of shows, opportunities, classes and events throughout the Sheridan Area. It s Spring Cleaning time, go thru your art creations and clean out your studios Booth space is only $25 for a 10x10 space and all sales are yours to keep no commissions! Open to any artists & craftsman, you do not need to be a member of SAGE. Set-up Saturday starting at 7am, bring your own tables, tent and cinderblocks. The sale opens to the public at 9am and ends at 3pm Drawings, Paintings, Sketches, Pottery, Glass, Jewelry, Woodwork, Photography, Prints, Cards skies the limit! Hope to see you there! 9th Annual Summer Art Camp July 15 18th for ages 3rd thru 8th grades at the Sagebrush Art Center. The daytime art camp Call for Art... The Sagebrush Art Center is hosting Young@Art a Sheridan Area Youth Art Contest & Show June 18th July 6th. The Young@Art show is open to all Sheridan area artists under age 18 in any media, all work must be original. The Young@Art show will hang in the Upstairs Gallery at the Sagebrush Art Center at 201 East 5th Street in Sheridan. Deadline for entries is 5pm on Monday, June 17th at the Art Center. There will be an artist reception on Wednesday, June 26th from 5-7p. The Art Center is working hard to get our area youth to participate and experience art with the Young@Art includes Collage with Neltje; Beading & Bracelets with Mary; Clay & More with Jody; and Basic Painting for the Fun of it with Sonja runs from 8:30a until 3:30p Monday thru Thursday. The evening art camp is Fantasy Fairy Gardens with Tena and is open to anyone over 3rd grade. It s four days of Fun and Creativity! Deadline to sign up is Monday, July 1st and you can get more information at the Sagebrush Art Center at 201 East 5th Street in Sheridan or call Get ready for the American Indian Art Market July 12 &13th in the Sagebrush Art Center parking lot. The Art Market is open to all adult American Indian artists and craftsman from any First People s Nation. All work must be an original interpretation and composition. The times of the Art Market are Friday, July 12 Noon-4p and Saturday, July 13 9am-4pm. The Cost: $45 for 16x20 Booth for both days July 12 & 13. Exhibitor must provide own tables, chairs & tent if needed. For more information contact the Sagebrush Art Center at 201 East 5th Street in Sheridan. Show and the Art Camp in July The American Indian Art Show & Sale is open to all adult American Indian artists from any of the First People s Nations. All work must be an original interpretation and composition. This is an invitation to show your creations in the Fine Art Gallery July 2 July 27 at the Sagebrush Art Center. Deadline for entries is 5pm on Thursday, June 27th you may get an application at the Art Center at 201 East 5th Street in Sheridan. There will be an artist reception on Thursday, July 11th before the WYO Rodeo from 4-6pm.

5 6 JUNE 20-30, 2013 SAGEBRUSH COMMUNITY ART CENTER SHERIDAN ART JUBILEE Discover Workshops The Sagebrush Art Center is a great place to discover your artistic talents. *UNCORKED with Sonja Caywood Get Uncorked the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays each month at the Sagebrush Art Center. Uncorked is a fun filled evening with Sonja teaching you step by step how to paint a specific painting. All supplies are provided for you and you leave the class with your very own painting. The subject changes each class so you get the opportunity to paint Magpies, Cows, Landscapes, Cabins and lots more depending on the subject that evening. Sonja is a gem of an instructor and will help even the most creatively-challenged person to feel like they have painted a masterpiece. Everyone goes home with a painting of their own and probably a few new friends. The next class will be Tuesday, June 25th, sign up early and the class fee is $35. *PHIL STARKE PLEIN AIR WORKSHOP Join Phil Starke for a four day plein-air workshop starting June 20th, the workshop is designed to help each artist develop their skills in outdoor painting at their own level. Phil will show you how to see as an artist and not as a camera, eliminating unnecessary detail and creating dynamic composition and better technique. There will also be a strong emphasis on mixing color with a limited palette, thinking through the thought process to come up with colors that suggests light and mood not just copying what you see, that s what a camera is for. The workshop will include demonstrations and lots of individual help. Phil will be working in oils, but pastels and acrylics are welcome, he will be sharing techniques that apply to all three mediums. The workshop will be June 20th 23rd for more information call (307) *MIKE BEEMAN PASTEL WORKSHOP Join Mike Beeman for a five day Pastel workshop starting July 24th. Mike will introduce you to pastels spending an intensive day learning the basics of pastel painting Mike will cover the technical applications of pastels, color, and artistic considerations using demonstrations and practice sessions. Students will learn the basic pastel techniques. Then the next two days you will have fun learning the basics of creating original and sensational paintings, and will serve as a continuation of techniques and applications. The last two days you will spend Plein air painting, an introduction to plein air painting for the beginner while taking the more advanced students to the next level. Be prepared for lots of fun, information, hands-on practice and encouragement! This workshop will assist students in obtaining a certain level of confidence in their painting ability and acquiring skills that can be used with any painting medium. Capture your impression: the thing that caught your eye in the first place. Pocket Sketching is perfect for travel, hiking, kayaking, or standing in line, quick sketches that capture a moment in time. Three days with Kath Macaulay learning the basic technique, landscape, and finishing within 25 minutes. Perspective of contrast, color and focal point are all covered. Day two Kath will cover still life and people and day three is on location, plein air, learning to use the technique anywhere in 25 minutes or less, fearlessly. Benefits: A quick personal way of recording what s immediately in front of you. Meditation. Always ready. For beginners and advanced artists. The workshop will be August 6th 8th to register call (307) Rock Creek Wildflower PAINT-OUT Sat/Sun June Bighorn National Forest Rock Creek recommended wilderness, Wyoming Wilderness Association and Sagebrush Art Center are partnering up to host Joan Hoffmann, extraordinary oil and watercolor artist, and Kathryn Turner, award winning plein air painter in a 2-day painting workshop working in the Rock Creek area, painting vistas at two historic guest ranches THE HF BAR RANCH AND PARADISE GUEST RANCH both located near Buffalo, Wyoming. Artists will travel on Saturday to the HF Bar Ranch, then on Sunday to Paradise Guest Ranch to paint under the guidance of these two extraordinary artists. Both ranches border the amazing Rock Creek recommended wilderness area. $40.00/day fee includes lunch at each ranch and helps pay the artists. Weave a Basket with Laura Lee Zanger Ms. Zanger is from Augusta, Georgia and is well known in the basketry world for her knowledge of the ancient Southeastern Native American twill techniques. She will be in Sheridan, WY on August 17, 2013 to offer an introduction to the ancient Choctaw twill technique. There is limited space for people who are interested in learning to make a basket using contemporary materials in this ancient tradition, where these three Choctaw-style baskets have more in common than just their colors. Learn how they all begin with a 4-block twill base. The Elbow and Heart are made exactly the same until a slight manipulation changes what could be an Elbow into a Heart. The Heart and Boat share some shaping and handle similarities. All three share a basic 4-4 twill that continues into the top portions of the baskets. Your kit will include the materials for all three baskets. You may choose one to weave in class. All three styles will be clearly demonstrated and taught. Ms. Zanger will display some of her baskets and share a short history lesson before class. Come, weave and experience the thrill of twill. The workshop will be August 17th to register call (307)
