A very versatile artist, Marie enjoys using various media to express her emotional response to a subject. Her work has received numerous outstanding rewards and is included in major collections. She holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Texas Women s University in Denton, Texas and has studies in several European countries. Marie is a lifetime member of the Plano Art Association, a Signature member of the Southwestern Watercolor Society, the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies and Associated Creative Artists of Texas, and the Texas Visual Arts Association. 2 MAY DEMONSTRATION Janice Hamilton Pastel Landscape Janice began her demo by explaining some of the pastels she uses in her work. She likes Sennelier pastels even though they are expensive because they are very good. She uses some Rembrandt pastels, but they add black and white to lighten and darken their pastels, which chang-es their color, so she also uses several other brands to get the colors she needs. She uses water-based, not oil-based, pastels. Oil pastels are not accepted into pastel shows. She sometimes undercoats her work with water-color or acrylic, but warns against using too much because it will fill up the tooth of the paper. Janice uses sanded papers because they hold colors better. She sometimes uses colored papers and prefers neutral paper for portraits and dark papers for florals. She recommended a frame shop she uses called Frames Destination located at Method St., Dallas, TX You can order frames from their website at Their phone number is She likes to doublemat her work and said that you can use glass or plexi for pastels, but must be careful not to rub the plexi because it builds up static electricity. Janice begins with a quick sketch and then uses charcoal to lay in the major shapes on the paper. Then she adds acrylic for the shapes and watercolor washes. To lift or distribute pastels on the paper, she uses a brush and a kneaded eraser (lightly tap, don t rub). She shared an anecdote about a time when she did a demo painting she wasn t very pleased with overall, but she did like one small section of it. She cut out and framed that section and then won a Grumbacher Gold Award for it. Janice s demo piece was a lovely landscape with trees in the background and water in the foreground. As she painted, she explained why she was using certain colors like darks to hold the painting together and lights to cause the viewer s eye to move around the painting. She humorously stated that she is not old and grumpy. Instead she is wise and discriminating. She also explained that she is not lazy, but is instead efficient in her painting techniques. Janice graciously donated three packages of her note cards to be raffled off at the meeting. During the break, members were reminded that it is time to renew their memberships for the coming year. They were also reminded to vote for painting of the month and to get a raffle ticket from Mickey Archer. 2

6 Message from the President Jones C. McConnell, Jr. Hope everyone had a wonderful summer of painting, traveling, relaxing, or whatever you did! September is upon us whether we are ready or not. Debbie Langham has a great lineup of artists arranged for us for the coming season. As an all-volunteer organization, we are always looking for members -- new or longtime members -- to step up to help with the various Shows and committees. Many jobs are one-time short duration projects, and every Show will have more than one person working on it. So, if you've never had a chance to volunteer, please do. We currently need help with the Membership Show, the Rosemary Cheney Show and the Summer Show. If you have ever had a painting accepted into one of the RCAS shows, we kinda expect some personal participation as a volunteer. It's a great way to get to know other RCAS members. A big Thanks to my upcoming Board members, many of whom were Board members last season too. We expect a super year for RCAS. JONESY Watch for the Blast which will be sent as-needed to notify the membership of upcoming events. Richardson Civic Art Society P.O. Box Richardson, TX October Meeting Cecy Turner Oil Landscape 6
