1 N E W S L E T T E R JUNE, 2012 Four top artists tell their history and how they developed their style... The May meeting was jam packed with members wanting to cash in on the bargains on art books and watercolor paper. But they also came to hear four prominent watercolorists talk about their beginnings and how they got to where they are now. Walt Davis explained how an early career in the Dallas Museum of Natural History doing dioramas of animal settings turned into a love for the outdoors, plein air painting and lately an intense study of insects, (the subject of a painting that got him into the AWS show this year). Rance Jones is a practicing story board artist in advertising. He has distinguished himself with his craft in the industry but has developed his painting skills in watercolor to amass quite a portfolio of beautifully done masterpieces of detail and color. He has been accepted into most shows he enters including NWS and AWS. Jo Moncrief showed off her Best of Show painting from last years SWS show and explained how she has transitioned from an acrylic on canvas painter to painting on yupo. Gail Delger took the audience through her early years with her first SWS show entry and the first entry to actually make into a show. It seemed to be a meeting that everyone enjoyed and maybe the focus for future meetings. Next Meeting, Mel Stabin Demo Sept. 12, pm Lovers Lane United Methodist Church President s Corner The year 2012/2013 will be an important year for the Southwestern Watercolor Society, and I look forward to serving as your president is the year SWS will host the Western Federation show. Jonesy McConnell has plans to make this the best WF show ever. Gayle Ledbetter has been working very hard behind the scenes getting ready for the SWS show. She has done a great job organizing a daunting task. The paint outs are a key part of SWS and are going strong. As the recent paint out chair, we visited Denton, McKinney, Granbury, Wichita Mountains, Denison and White Rock Lake. Walt Davis has exciting plans for the 2012 fall and the 2013 spring paint outs while I serve as president. Mickey Archer is the new incoming first vice president and has plans to bring in some exciting artists for workshops. As last year s first vice president, I had the pleasure of recruiting artist Jenny McGuire and artist Keiko Tanabe for workshops. The May meeting program with Walt Davis, Rance Jones, Jo Moncrief and Gail Delger was so successful we have decided to make future May meetings a traditional four member presentation. We need a volunteer for membership chair. Please let me know if you are interested in heading this very important position. Finally I would like to thank Jeff Good for his leadership and hard work as the previous president. Jeff has done a great job. I would also like to thank the board of directors and the committee chairs and members for a job well done. I look forward to an exciting 2012/2013! Gaylord O Con, president

3 Workshops Emphasis on design principles focus for Mel Stabin workshop Sept Mel Stabin Sept , 2012 (4day) Artists Showplace $425* $450** This four-day watercolor workshop, painting landscapes and people in landscapes, will reflect the title of Mel s book, Watercolor: Simple, Fast, and Focused. Emphasis will be on design principles with the objective of building strong paintings by seeing and thinking simply, painting quickly and energetically, and focusing on the idea of the painting. Mel paints in a loose, representational style. Design, composition, and color/value relationships will be discussed throughout. This indoor workshop includes daily demonstrations with a step-by-step simple explanation of solutions to every problem presented by the subject, personal instruction, and critiques. The workshop is designed for beginners to advanced painters. See Mel s website at : Planning, design and color usage to bring concept to finished painting is focus for Tom Francesconi Oct workshop Tom Francesconi Oct , (3Day) Artists Showplace $225* $250** Tom s passion for watercolor and his love for teaching combine to create a dynamic workshop experience that is enjoya- ble, informative and inspirational. Tom s watercolor workshops focus on the importance of concept and how to bring an original idea to fulfillment with paint. Tom will discuss such topics as value relationships, planning the painting, design principles, and usage of color. A variety of daily demonstrations allow participants to see how Tom approaches a work from concept to finish. The demonstrations include a range of subjects from landscapes to figurative. Students work from their own references as they are presented each day with new challenges intended to promote thought and encourage exploration. Ample opportunity is provided for everyone to paint with individual direction/guidance a priority. Group critiques allow everyone an opportunity to learn from the works of others. Painters of all levels of experience are welcome. See Tom s website at: tomfrancesconi.com Mastering a knowledge of the medium and the subject will challenge students to Tom Hoffman s Nov workshop Tom Hoffman Nov , (3Day) Artists Showplace $225* $250** Watercolor invites us to find a balance between form and content, where we can see the washes and strokes as paint and as subject matter at the same time. The best watercolors leave room for the paint to assert its fluid nature, which means that the artist was not controlling every millimeter of its movement. Instead, when you make conscious decisions about the value, color, and wetness of the paint and paper in advance, you are much more likely to create an intentional stroke, one that does not need correcting. The key to taking the uncertainty out of watercolor painting lies in knowing, within PAGE 3 SCENE an acceptable range, what will happen when the brush touches the paper. The wider you can make that range of acceptable results, the more carefree your application of the stroke can be. See Tom s website at: Telling a story in a painting the focus of Jeannie McGuire s Feb, 2013 workshop Jeannie McGuire, AWS Feb , 2013 (3Day) Artist s Showplace $225* $250** Workshops with Jeannie McGuire will encourage and challenge artists to communicate a story or feeling in their paintings and create strong figurative works of art in watercolor. Referencing a variety of photographs and snap shots her workshops focus on absorbing the viewer by developing emotion and movement; intertwining figurative subjects with their background; seeing natural design in reference materials; exploring the impact of cropping and the placement of contrast; and most importantly a purpose for creating art. Through demonstrations, candid conversation and individual time Jeannie shares her painting style and thoughts as well as the versatility of watercolor when employing a higher ratio of pigment to water. See Jeannie s website at: jeanniemcguire.com
