2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Lou Bono, SWS President Happy New Year 2019! Thank you to our Board and Committee Chairs for a great 2018, and all you do for our members and for your love of watercolor! Jonesy McConnell, our SWS Western Federation delegate, reported 51 SWS artists submitted 117 digital images this year, compared to 53 artists submitting 134 images last year. Western Fed will notify Jonesy January 14 of artists who were selected for the show in San Diego. Good luck to all our SWS members who submitted! We are organizing the nominating committee for the selection of the new SWS board members that take office in May If you are interested in being on a committee or joining the SWS board of directors, please contact me by January 15th. Many hands makes light work! Especially important is having an Exhibition Chair (and committee) in place for the September 2019 Exhibition. Bill Dale and Pam Wilson have done a great job compiling a new and improved playbook which will greatly assist the incoming Exhibition Chair. *Our next monthly member meeting will be Tuesday January 8th at 7pm at LLUMC. * We will not have members painting of the month. Our program will include a presentation by Asel Art, and the always entertaining and inspiring Throwdown, emceed by the illustrious Jonesy McConnell, with intrepid artists Michael Holter, Gaylord Ocon, Pat Kochan and Bill Dale. We are in the process of organizing our Spring Paint Out and we have been invited to another joint plein air event with the Art Center of Plano (thank you Michael Holter) details on both will be forthcoming. 3 ARTIST S SPOTLIGHT PHYLLIS TSENG My life used to be the story of an average mom and homemaker. In between dropping off my children at school and picking them up, I managed to take care of the house chores. Bliss During that period of time, I enjoyed taking photos of everyday life. These characters and the themes in my photos were to become the subjects of my later paintings. In addition, baking was a form of art to me because I found I could be as creative as I would like. I loved to share my pastry creations with my friends because I could see the enjoyment on their faces. But then I found watercolor. Growing up in Taiwan, I never had any experience with fine arts. Academic achievements were emphasized by my parents and many others too. In addition to my education, I also worked hard to help support my family. After immigrating to the U.S. and starting a family of my own, I found my love of art. At first, I just dabbled in watercolor. Then I moved on to charcoal drawings, pastel paintings and other kinds of drawings. Through it all, I found that I always went back to transparent watercolor. Throughout the more than ten years that I have been exploring watercolor, I have participated in many competitions locally, nationally and internationally. As soon as I realized that I needed more challenges, I moved on from local exhibitions to CWS, NWS, WW, SDWS and SWS. I have won numerous of awards in these competitions over the years. I have come to greatly admire one painter in particular. Her name is Fealing Lin and she is a renowned watercolor artist. I have been very lucky to paint and interact with her for years. Many transparent watercolor painters. including me. have been influenced by her style which is a combination of impressionistic and semi-abstract. Being able to paint this way is just amazing to me. Having some achievements as an artist, I am filled with gratitude for her support. Leaning Home My only goal for my future as a watercolor artist is to be able to inspire other people. I hope they will feel happy and positive energy from my paintings. My wish is to share my love for art and painting watercolors through my work. Ceramic Hands Walking on Sunshine Waiting 3

4 SWS RECENT EVENTS SWS Holiday Party The SWS Holiday Party was held on Sunday, December 2nd, from 2-4 pm at Teta Smith s Gallery located at the Shops at Willow Bend in Plano. Attendees were invited to bring an appetizer and/or desert to share along with their favorite beverage. They were also invited to bring a painting to exchange for paintings by other members. Thirty-four people attended. This year the traditional painting exchange was a bit different. Everyone who wanted to participate brought a matted, wrapped painting, ½ sheet or smaller and the paintings were passed around according to the roll of dice. The painting each member had after everyone had a turn was theirs to keep. A good time was had by all. A special thank you to Dalynn Montgomery for organizing the event.

5 SWS UPCOMING EVENTS January Membership Meeting - Artist Throwdown January is a special month at SWS. As we transition into the new year, we do not host a visiting artist to give a demo and offer a workshop. Instead we plan a very entertaining meeting that features our own talent. As we did last year, we will be holding another Member Artist Throwdown. This year, it will feature Bill Dale, Michael Holter, Pat Kochan, and Gaylord O Con. They will each will bring half sheet drawings on watercolor paper ready to paint. When it is time to begin, Referee Jones McConnell will signal and each painter will begin working on their own composition. After 15 minutes, each painter passes their painting to their neighbor and begin working on the painting they just received. After 15 minutes, the paintings will be passed again, and then again. When each painting is back with its designer, that painter has another 15 minutes to finish it. Each painting will be signed by all four painters who worked on it. Four great painters with four different styles; this is a chance to watch them deal with the challenge. The four original paintings will then be auctioned to membership, benefitting the 2019 Members Exhibition. 6 SWS UPCOMING EVENTS SPRING WORKSHOPS After a hiatus in December and January, 2019, starting in February, treat yourself to one or more of the upcoming workshops by well-known watercolor artists. Enrollment in Spring SWS Workshops is now open for registration. (Membership information is available online at To register and find out more about the workshops, go to Fill out the workshop form and make a $50 nonrefundable deposit to hold your seat. The deposit is non-transferable to other workshops or persons and will only be refunded as a result of dire circumstances or emergencies. Any refund requests will be evaluated by the Workshop VP and 1st VP Programs. Invoices for the final balance will be mailed to workshop participants and are due 3 weeks before the workshop start date to continue to hold the seat. Spring workshops cost $ for members and $ for non-members. 7 SWS HAPPENINGS News of Members Ron Bigony s painting Abandoned Mill was completed during the 2017 SWS paint out in Jefferson Marshall, Tx. He was honored to have this painting included in the Plien Air Magazine Jan 2019 Edition. The painting was included in the Doors, Windows, and Passages Section on page 25. The painting size is 20 x 15. Cecy Turner is very proud to have attained Signature Membership in the American Impressionist Society (AIS), which will be official on January 1st. Cecy will be exhibiting in the American Plains Artists Signature Show May 4 June 29, 2019, in the Museum of Western Art, Kerrville, Texas. Opening Reception is Saturday, May 4, from 2-4 p.m. Robbie Fitzpatrick s painting The Front Gate was a Finalist in the Richeson Landscapes, Seascapes, and Architecture Exhibition. It has also been juried into the 10th Annual Signature American Watermedia International Exhibition. Two of her pieces, Please and On Grandma s Blanket were juried into the Women Artists of the West Tallgrass Rendezvous 48th National Exhibition, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Her watercolor Foot of the Bed has been awarded Honorable Mention in Southwest Art Magazine s Artistic Excellence Competition, with a feature in the December issue. Nanc Gordon will be in a group show called Calm to Chaos at The Gallery at North Haven Gardens exhibiting acrylic monoprints from January 25 - March 15.
