1 N E W S L E T T E R APRIL, 2012 Keiko Tanabe shows exceptional talent with her March demo. Keiko Tanabe, a relative newcomer to the watercolor workshop scene, held an amazing three day workshop that was highlighted by an equally amazing demo at the March meeting. Her technical skills were impressive and her interpretation of the source and transferring it with a minimal sketch to her paper was impressive. She washed over the page with deft strokes of confident color followed by constantly returning to different areas that would gradually take shape and clarity. She spoke little that indicated a total emersion in her subject. Her minimal sized palette and few colors did not diminish the wonderful capture of light and color in her painting. Members lucky enough to attend her workshop were grateful that they had an experience with her. Next Meeting, April 11, 2012 Priscilla Krejci, Jeff Good demos 7-9 pm Lovers Lane United Methodist Church President s Corner I sure enjoyed taking the SWS workshop this past month, led by Keiko Tanabe. I don t know when I have seen so much energy and stamina from an instructor. Did you hear that after teaching all day (completing two half sheet paintings) and completing another same size demo painting during our monthly meeting, she went back to the hotel and started and completed another one! Wow, that s inspirational. Besides the value of watching the painting process, I found it interesting to discover little subconscious habits that we do that actually prepares our body and mind to paint, such as the act of taping down a sheet of watercolor paper. The next time I did it, I noticed it did feel like a ritual that was part of getting myself focused to create something. Don t sweat the little things, but don t forget the importance of them either. That workshop sent me off on my painting vacation trip full of enthusiasm. I hope you have a great painting month of April. Jeff Good President, SWS

Cheryl DeVoto is a returning SWS member from Costa Mesa, California when she moved two years ago for personal reasons. She and her husband Khris are both from the Dallas area and she is a devoted mom of seven grown children and two grandchildren. She has spent the last 23 years home schooling her children. Cheryl has always had a love for art and painting nurtured by her mother, Anne Bedford, SWS signature member. It was her mother that provided the materials and books that got her interested in painting watercolor. In 2005 she began a full time devotion to watercolor that has led her interest and membership in several art societies. She has studied with Naomi Brotherton and Geri Medway (in California) to sharpen her skills and understanding of watercolor. She wishes that full time devotion to watercolor were possible but is Painting of the Month - March 2012 excited and passionate to now have more time to paint. She is a signature member of the Texas Watercolor Society and has been on the board of the National Watercolor Society in 2011 and the Huntington Beach Art League board in In 2010 she had been accepted into the following exhibitions: 2010 National Watercolor Society All Member Show 2010 The Texas Watercolor Society 2010 Dallas Blooms Artscape - Honorable Mention 2011 Huntington Beach Art League annual exhibition. Join me in a heartfelt welcome to Cheryl and wish her much success as the new SWS Scene editor. Cheryl will begin her duties with the September 2012 issue. She will train with Ron Stephens on the May and June issues to get up to speed. Painting of the Month winners receive Gift Certificates from Asel Art Supply. 3 Paint Outs SWS Paint Out Artist, CANCEL BRENHAM PAINTOUT I met with several of the SWS paint out artists over the week end and I have decided to CANCEL the Brenham, Texas paint out on May Brenham is 220 miles from Dallas and combining that with the list of cancelations I have already received, I decided to reschedule and bring the spring paint out closer to Dallas. The rescheduled paint out will be on May in Denton Texas. You have a choice of painting Friday and Saturday or just Saturday. Denton is 42 miles from Dallas. We have lots of SWS members in Denton that know the city very well. I plan to have a rate set up with a hotel if you want to spend the night. We will have a gathering Friday evening and a dinner reception on Saturday evening. Denton has a historic courthouse, town square, lots of historic homes and other interesting scenes to paint Watch the Scene and your for updates. My Best, Gaylord O'Con SCENE Emphasis on design principles focus for Mel Stabin workshop Sept Mel Stabin Sept , 2012 (4day) Artists Showplace $425* $450** This four-day watercolor workshop, painting landscapes and people in landscapes, will reflect the title of Mel s book, Watercolor: Simple, Fast, and Focused. Emphasis will be on design principles with the objective of building strong paintings by seeing and thinking simply, painting quickly and energetically, and focusing on the idea of the painting. Mel paints in a loose, representational style. Design, composition, and color/value relationships will be discussed throughout. This indoor workshop includes daily demonstrations with a step-by-step simple explanation of solutions to every problem presented by the subject, personal instruction, and critiques. The workshop is designed for beginners to advanced painters. See Mel s website at : Planning, design and color usage to bring concept to finished painting is focus for Tom Francesconi Oct workshop Tom Francesconi Oct , (3Day) Artists Showplace $225* $250** Tom s passion for watercolor and his love for teaching combine to create a dynamic workshop experience that is enjoyable, informative and inspirational. Tom s watercolor workshops focus on the importance of concept and how to bring an original idea to fulfillment with paint. Tom will discuss such topics as value relationships, planning the painting, design principles, and usage of color. A variety of daily demonstrations allow participants to see how Tom approaches a work from concept to finish. The demonstrations include a range of subjects from landscapes to figurative. Students work from their own references as they are presented each day with new challenges intended to promote thought and encourage exploration. Ample opportunity is provided for everyone to paint with individual direction/guidance a priority. Group critiques allow everyone an opportunity to learn from the works of others. Painters of all levels of experience are welcome. See Tom s website at: tomfrancesconi.com Mastering a knowledge of the medium and the subject will challenge students to Tom Hoffman s Nov workshop Tom Hoffman Nov , (3Day) Artists Showplace $225* $250** Watercolor invites us to find a balance between form and content, where we can see the washes and strokes as paint and as subject matter at the same time. The best watercolors leave room for the paint to assert its fluid nature, which means that the artist was not controlling every millimeter of its movement. Instead, when you make conscious decisions about the value, color, and wetness of the paint and paper in advance, you are much more likely to create an intentional stroke, one that does not need correcting. The key to taking the uncertainty out of watercolor painting lies in knowing, within an acceptable range, what will happen when the brush touches the paper. The wider you can make that range of acceptable results, the more carefree your application of the stroke can be. See Tom s website at: PAGE 3
