SPECIAL CHRISTMAS EDITION A Word from your President Website: Professor Ruth McPhail Dear Members, Welcome to the Christmas time newsletter thanks to Santa and his most helpful helper Michael Hooper Vice President! And what a party he put on for us see for yourself with our photos inside. Updates include a successful Special General Meeting held December 9th which approved funding to be assigned to the lift project, further work and investment to be made to seek permission for a canteen from Council and some constitutional changes which sees us being able to pay you electronically, In addition the changes will go to the Brisbane branch meeting in January for approval see the minutes on the notice boards for more information. News of the lift...we are working with Council to finalise their contribution and ours, we need owners consent which may take 3 months, then we order the lift=12 weeks and then we install about two weeks so fingers crossed we will be in for the AGM. A special note of thanks to the Committee who as always go beyond the call of duty always at the party first to set up and there to pack down and sweep up. Special thanks to Leanne Manns and Lynne Astill who keep us running and Bill, Fulvia, Effi, Stephanie, Margret, Erol and Lee. We have received a letter from Clarence House, London. From the Assistant Secretary (Commonwealth) to THR The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall Addressed to Dr. Ruth McPhail, PhD, M.Ed, B.Ed Thanking us for our letter regarding the Commonwealth Games, at the request of the Queen, The Prince of Wales will be representing Her Majesty. His Royal Highness is grateful for our invitation but to commit to our kind invitation is not possible. Our letter will be passed to the Australian Government who is developing his program.

Constitution Changes At our AGM it passed that we should follow the RQAS Brisbane and make some changes to our Constitution in line with them.

Also passed at our AGM was: All membership to start together from January 1st. Of course this will be pro-rata.

You Our Christmas party was a great success with 77 chairs with members sitting on them. Estimated for the caterers was 60. We were lucky that they bring extra, in case this sort of thing happens.

5 Constitution Changes At our AGM it passed that we should follow the RQAS Brisbane and make some changes to our Constitution in line with them. Among the few changes that were passed are Voting rights for Life Members and the extension of the maximin period for a President from 3 years to 5 years. Also passed at our AGM was: All membership to start together from January 1st. Of course this will be pro-rata. If now your membership payment is now due in April you will only pay for 8 months which will take you up to the 1st of January. Actually it was getting very close to the point that we would have to draw a line and cut the list saying sorry, but our president wouldn t allow it saying if anyone is to miss out it will be the committee. However we all ended up having our dinner. =========== MEMBERSHIP CARDS and: ============ Are you looking for your MEMBERSHIP card? There are cards at the front desk and have been for some time now, take a look, perhaps yours is one of them. Renewal Member Cards are no longer sent out by post, but are kept at the front desk for you to pick up. Also; There are still paintings in the store to be picked up, some of the paintings have been left for some time now. The longer they are left, the more chance there is that they will get damaged. As you know, the society takes no responsibility for painting left at the gallery. Also ; Believe it or not, On a Change Over day, as everyone is able to see, we get very busy and it would seem that some just don t realize that there is no time for stringing or restringing canvases and frames. If you can-not manage this at home you should get someone to help you, but it certainly is not the gallery s job to do it for you. If you would take your work to another, they would not hang your work. So please before bringing your work on Change Over days, just make sure it is strung properly (with D hooks) and that the cord or wire is strong and will not break,

6 Learn to Paint in Watercolour with Annette Raff The Essential Basics! $150 Sat10th and Sun11th March 2018 Royal Qld Art Society, Broadbeach Have you always wanted to paint in watercolour, but not sure where to start? Are you struggling with technique and need to refresh on the basics? This workshop will focus on teaching the fundamentals of watercolour technique, explained clearly and simply alongside demonstrations that you can follow. Ideally this workshop is suited to beginners and struggling intermediate painters or those wishing to improve their technique. There is no one way to paint in watercolour. Different approaches produce very different results and the aim of this workshop is to explore the versatility of the medium so that you can be inspired to continue your painting journey in your own way. We will explore brush control, wet on wet washes, colour mixing and edge control will be covered and you will complete some small paintings. A relaxed learning environment where students feel free to try things out is the best way to learn and Annette will encourage students to enjoy the process of exploration.
