Kerry Kupferschmidt Watermarks Newsletter for the Central MM Watercolorists November/December 2015 Important: Start your card for our relaxing and fun Christmas/Holiday meeting on Dec. 14, 2015 at the Paramount Visual Arts Studios. Bring a treat - sweet or savory - to share. *** Sign up NOW for the Don Andrews Workshop featuring Landscapes with Figures. Call Derick at Presidents message: Well, November caught me curled up on my couch wrapped in a soft warm throw watching the wind play havoc with the leaves in the yard then watching the first snow fall. The trees once brilliantly flaunting their oranges, yellows and reds show their taupe infrastructures reaching towards a sky now grey more often than blue. Snow blowers are fired up in ready and wood smoke scents the air. By the time you read this, we will have given thanks for all we enjoy, will be trying out those left over turkey recipes and decorating for Christmas!! As fall fades moving us to indoor activities, CMW has provided contrapuntal color, inspiration and excitement to the internal environs of Rivers Edge Convention Center, Whitney Senior Center and Waite Park Library. Many of you who attended Frank Zeller s workshop in October are finishing paintings influenced by his techniques and use of pastels. Kelly Kupferschmidt s demo at the October meeting showing the process he uses to do watercolors of architectural renderings of new homes brought a new perspective. November 6 Bonnie Schwichtenberg and Linda Addicott represented CMW demoing their skills at the Art Crawl in studio B at the Paramount Visual Arts Center, downtown St Cloud. Dan Mondloch also illustrated his style in studio C then gave an interesting artist talk summarizing his plein air journey culminating in his exhibit there, Perpetual Search- 1 Year of Outdoor Painting now showing through December 5. Tim Schreder was also busy at the Falcon Bank on the 6 th creating a collaborative painting with a team of local artists. January 2014 ONLINE Find Central Minnesota Watercolorists news and more at and on Facebook at Central MN Watercolorists
November 10, Duane Barnhardt brought quiet humor as he brought an old pickup to life in a familiar rural backyard. Of course, many of you continue to attend or conduct attended by many you who have completed or are finishing paintings influenced by his techniques and uses of pastels. At the October 12 member meeting Kelly Kupferschmidt demonstrated the process he uses to do watercolors of architectural renderings of new homes. Of course, many of you continue to attend or conduct workshops, participate with small painting groups mentoring and sharing water media insights and ideas. The CMW board continues its energetic work behind the scenes. The CMW Guidelines are being reviewed and updated to include processes for management and accountability regarding digital media(our web site, Facebook page); privacy issues; board member roles and succession planning; property management; member responsibilities regarding exhibits, shows, fees etc. The 2016 budget was approved; copies will be available at the December meeting. The Memorandum of Understanding for our relationship with the Paramount Visual Arts Center(PVAC) was updated by Melissa Gohman, director of PVAC, and me then approved by the board. Workshops, demo artists and meeting activities have been planned through 2015 and into Nunc cursus magna quis Recently the board traveled to Campfire Bay Resort in Cushing to tour the grounds and check out the facilities. It s a very nice venue. We plan an informal painting retreat there March 10 to 13. Bonnie follows with pix and details. Lots happening!! We have gained 3 new members. Welcome Janice Wicks, Emily Howell and Paulette Swarthout! We have added Good Shepherd Community and another opportunity to show at the Whitney Senior Center to our 2016 exhibit calendar. You have varied opportunities to participate in CMW: exhibits, demoing, teaching, board membership/leadership roles as they open. I step down December 31. We need a new president. The board determined that the past president will remain a nonvoting board member to provide a support role assisting the new president as needed not to exceed a year. Please consider this opportunity and throw your hat in the ring! The December meeting is approaching. We ask you to design an original Christmas card for our annual exchange. Bring a sweet or savory snack to share. During the festivities we will view the Transparent Watercolor Society of America s annual show, always a treat. Thanks to the board for their consistently diligent contributions and to you all for your presence at meetings and for enhancing the arts in our community! "Art is the only way to run away without leaving home." Twyla Tharp Stef Central Minnesota Watercolorists is in great need of a member to step in as President. The term is for 2 years. In addition to presiding at monthly CMW meetings Sept - May, the president also schedules a meeting monthly with the board and the webmaster at a place convenient for him/her. For the first time the current President (Stef) will become the Past President for the first year (2016) to assist the board with transition, help out when needed, and offer support and advice when asked. The new President will serve for two years. Please consider agreeing to become the President for the club and for your own artistic growth. We will be glad to work with you! Stef, Robyn, Linda, Bonnie and Mary (our webmaster ex officio). DUES Dues are $25 per year payable to the Treasurer, Robyn York, before Feb. 1, It is important that you are aware that all paintings and artists pages on the CMW website will be deleted after Feb. 1 if dues are not paid.
The Banner Painting This is my own painting. I was very proud of it and it is special because it is the only real painting I have ever sold to someone not a relative. I started it in the Lian Zhen workshop and finished it at home. I found out that I am really comfortable with the style he taught us which is setting out an abstract background using very little drawing and finding the details of the work through negative painting. This really works for me. Also working with a simple triad makes the colors harmonious everywhere in the work. I won t see this piece anymore and I will really miss it. Bonnie Please contact Bonnie at bswitz@cloudnet.com by the 25th of each month so we can post your event/award/display. CMW wants to support all your art adventures.

Our Own Kerry Kupferschmidt Demonstration October 2015 Kerry took us through his complete process of how he makes an architectural portrait of a home one of his accounts wants to promote. He works with architects and realtors in the state to help them present their properties or designs to their buyers and clients. Frank Zeller workshop, Oct , 2015 at the Paramount Visual Arts Center Frank focused on the works and techniques of several different artists. We worked on an underpainting with India Ink, creating a painting with only 4 values, and creating a piece using realia Frank provided by taking an unconventional look at the shapes and color. Mary C and Yvonne S work on their India Ink under painting piece as does Suzanna J. We added color after we textured our pieces with ink using a found stick or a shaved matchstick..
Frank Zeller continued: After we created a small piece using only cutouts from 4 values Frank went on to show us how to use that model to create a watercolor using the same four values only this time in color. By referring to our original model of the 4 values in neutral tint, we could decide where to place the lightest and darkest values using color. Here is Frank s finished piece. Photo Issues We have paintings on exhibit at this time in three venues currently. The River s Edge Convention Center thru Nov. 30, 2015, the Waite Park Library thru Dec. 30, 2015, and Whitney Sr. Center thru Nov. 30, We are finding that the lighting glare is so serious in certain venues on the glass that it is nearly impossible to take a good picture of your work. They are easy to see in person but the camersa doesn t like the setting. Going forward I will try to have a helper hold the piece up for a photo before hanging to do justice to your work. At this time all of the Rivers Edge exhibit photos had so much glare that I could not get one good shot. It is only possible thanks to Sandra Koep that we have some of the Waite Park Library pieces. Thank you Sandra. When I see that this is the case I will make every effort to take a picture of your work before it is hung OR you for a jpg to use in the neswletter. I am trying to edit some of the other paintings from Whitney and Rivers Edge to feature in the next newsletter.
Waite Park Partial exhibits thank you Sandra Koep for your photographs. COLORFUL PAINTING TIPS I keep getting questions about framing your work. So here is a repeat for some and new ideas for others. Rule #1. When you are starting out, pick paper sizes that fit common frames. A 5 x 7 painting fits a hole made for an 8 x 10 frame. The ready made mat hole is 4 ½ x 6 ½ An 8 x 10 painting fits a hole made for an 11 x 14 frame. The ready made mat hole is 7 ½ x 9 ½. A 11 x 14 or 15 painting fits a hole made for a 16 x 20 frame. The ready made mas hole is 13 ½ x 10 ½. Rule #2. When someone offers you a free frame with a glass check the size AND the depth of the cerf/rabbet to hold the picture. You need it to be about 3/8 to ½ to hold the picture, the mat, the glass, and the backing board. Rule #3. When starting out, generally the best color mat to get is white or cream. A double mat hole is the same size hole as a single mat also. It is the outside mat that is bigger. The inside one is the single size. Rule #4. Use wire and D ring strap hangers to hang your picture. Most galleries will not accept a sawtooth hanger.
Duane Barnhart demonstrates on November 9, 2015 We had an excellent turnout for the November meeting and a really interesting program presented by Duane Barnhart who painted an old pickup truck that had been sitting so long in its location it was starting to sink into the earth. Duane felt he had better paint it before someone towed it away. We were also given tips on how to mount Arches Paper onto masonite, and how to finish and mount a painting without glass or mats.
