St. Germain St., St Cloud, as our official meeting location. You may park free in the ramp behind. January 2014 President s Message Well, the March lion is roaring! Winter is in its grasp for a bit longer but we will brave the cold and impending snow advisories with aplomb! CMW heartiness was proven February 9 at Easel Night. About 23 members attended and shared their Food for Thought themed paintings in studio C at the Paramount. Much good discussion about them and CMW business items ensued. The new start time worked well. Positive energy flourished again Saturday the 28 th. Despite wind and cold, friends, family and many of the CMW folks who had paintings displayed in our exhibit, Light in Winter, at Great River Arts in Little Falls gathered to view the art and socialize at our reception. Refreshments provided by CMW and the gallery staff enhanced the ambience. Sam Bruno, gallery associate, told me GRA had received many fine comments about the show. Sandra Driscoll was surprised on her arrival to learn her painting, Little Falls Dam, had sold earlier in the week. Congratulations, Sandra! Many thanks are extended to the GRA staff for hanging the exhibit so nicely and providing reception help. Big thanks to all who submitted work for these events! 2 The end of winter has challenged us not only with its obvious ploys but Lian Quan Zhen s workshop must be rescheduled from the April to pending June dates. We hope that those enrolled will be able to adjust with few wrinkles. Melissa Gohman, director of the Paramount Visual Arts Center, has been working with Mr. Zhen and the board to get the new schedule out shortly. We have adjusted the events calendar accordingly and to include planned exhibits at two new venues: the Waite Park Library and the Whitney Senior Center. The board continues its quest for new experiences for CMW and the community it serves. Come join us March 9 at our 6pm Social to sign in and up for events, begin the meeting at 6:20pm and enjoy Carol Spohn s demo Watercolor on Batik. The new dates are June There is a possible second class on June If you are signed up and can not attend the call Derick at to get on the waiting list if that would work better for you. If you are on the waiting list and want the 15-18th, call Derick right away and get on that list. TAX INFORMATION WHEN YOU MAKE A SALE When you participate in a group show, you are responsible for collecting and paying the sales tax. You need a sales tax number. You can get a number and information from the Minnesota Department of Revenue. Write them at Minnesota Department of Revenue, Sales and Use Tax Division, Mail Station 6330, St. Paul, Mn The toll free phone number is The web site is It is easy to get the number, just a few basic questions. CONGRATULATIONS JUDITH MEYERAAN S painting Between Rock and Hard Place This painting was inspired by Judith sister, Ginger, the master gardener in the family. Some of her grandkids offered to put a rock wall behind her prize winning yellow hybrid iris. It made an interesting subject. This has been accepted into the juried Spring Show of the Minnesota Watercolor Society at the Minnetoka Center for the Arts March 12- April 9, Good Luck, Judith : ). 6 GRAA SHOW LITTLE FALLS, MN, RECEPTION FEB. 28, 2015 There was an excellent turnout for the ending reception from 12-2pm on Feb. 28, 2015 at the Great River Arts Association. The venue was excellent for displaying the CMW collection of artist paintings. Here are some of the artists and withe works. An overall view on one wall. Sandra Driscoll is really happy. She sold this painting. Stef. Young drove around with Barb Jordan to get just the right take on these Birch saplings. Here is Suzanna Johnson s beautiful floral. This is Diane Runberg s multimedia painting of water and rocks. She finished the piece with beautiful turquoise pastel shades. You can see more paintings at wwwcentralmnwatercolorists.org. 6

7 Easel Night at the Feb. 9, 2015 Meeting There was a great turnout at the Feb. meeting for Easel Night. We get to show our work to each other once a year. Mary Buhl quickly loaded all the photos onto the CMW website, Here are a few highlights. Kerry Kupferschmidt explains his Pileated Woodpeckers painting. Actually the photo of the birds was one at his bird feeder. He is still working on the piece. Pat Spence painted this favorite Strawberry Cake, family recipe in Sharon Nieters painting classes which are held every Thursday at the Watab Town Hall from 12:30 3:30 pm. There is a very modest fee. Just show up with your paints. Susan Jensen- Cekalla was also working on a recipe painting of marvelous vegetables for a favorite Salsa recipe. She shared many studies of ingredients to go in the painting. You can see how colorful it will be and how much thought she is putting into the composition.

9 COLORFUL PAINTING TIPS CMW is having a small paintings exhibit a Art in the Park on July 17, This will be a GREAT chance for you to exhibit painting. You don t have to try to sell it. Just show it if you want to. SHADOWS Shadows make your paintings have depth and more interest. There are a couple of steps to follow if you are beginning to paint that will help you get started. In the next couple of months I will try to make this less complex. There rules are just starters to help you form your own habits. 1. When you make your value sketch DECIDE IMMEDIATELY where the light is coming from. Is it from the left or right, from the top, or behind, etc.? To begin with think about making paintings with either left or right light. It is a little clearer. Later you can branch out. 2. When you make your value drawing the SHADOW should be part of the object. Always draw the shadows in your value drawing. 3. Shadows DO NOT take on the color of the object. They are the absence of light usually on the ground or flat surface. So, if a lemon casts a shadow on a blue tablecloth the shadow will be darker blue NOT dark yellow. 4. Shadows that project from warm colors are often painted in cool colors like a favorite shadow color Cobalt Blue. These shadows are sometimes painted into the paper BEFORE the local color. 5. Shadows that reflect from cool colors are often painted in a warmer color like Permanent Magenta. They are also often painted onto the painting BEFORE the local color. These ideas are very basic and work for many instances BUT not all cases. It is just a place to start understanding shadows. The more you paint the more you become more comfortable with shadows.
