Intermediate report Majors Mathematics and Computer Science Degree Master of Science Host country USA Date of stay September May 2018 Host University University of Massachusetts, Amherst Identification Code USA-2017-H9L37-w Living off campus Unless you choose to live on campus, the most important thing to do before leaving Germany is to find a place to live. I failed doing so. Here are some tips on how you hopefully won t fail: Craigslist.com is definitely a great website to find housing and anything else (used) you re looking for during your exchange year. Of course, be careful! Some posts might be scams! Umass also provides a website for off campus housing. As soon as you get your Umass NetID, you can create a profile and let other people know that you re looking for an apartment. I tried both, but still couldn t find an apartment before my flight to Amherst. I was lucky enough to find a place to couchsurf for the first few nights and I found a place to live after a couple of days. Something else you can do, when looking for an apartment, is to contact real estate companies around Amherst. If you contact them a few months in advance and fill out an application right away, it should be easy to get an apartment. Some names around Amherst are Sugarloaf Estates, Boulders Apartments, Olympia Place or Cliffside Apartments. The downside is, that they usually come unfurnished, which might be a problem. I now live in South Deerfield, which is not too far from Umass, but the buses in and out of South Deerfield are terrible, so I had to buy a car. I usually drive to a park-and-ride in Sunderland and take the bus from there. If you consider buying a car, you have much more options as to where you can live, because you re independent from the bus system. It takes me about 30 minutes to get from my house to the university building, which is still great considering that I am living in a great, big apartment and I don t pay as much rent as some people in smaller apartments closer to campus. My room was not furnished, but that is not a problem here, because bedrooms usually come with a closet for clothes and you can get all kinds of used 1
furniture on craigslist. I myself bought a queen size air mattress at Walmart, which is cheaper and surprisingly even more comfortable than most beds. Rent is definitely more expensive here, unless you re willing to share a room with somebody. I think Americans don t really have the concept of a German Studenten-WG. Most places have a living room (mostly open, so that you can t really use it as an extra bedroom) and a spacious kitchen. Hence the higher rent! Preparation at home or in the first few weeks Another very practical thing to do while you re still in Germany, is to open a bank account with a bank that allows you to get money in the US without paying annoying fees. I opened an account with Deutsche Bank during my first week here. It was easy and I was able to do so online, but I would recommend you to do it before coming here, so you don t have to worry about it in the first few days or weeks. Deutsche Bank allows me to get money at any Bank of America ATM without paying fees. I do that from time to time and then deposit the money to my Bank of America account right away. You might also consider getting a new Sim card. If you already know where you will live, you can order a Sim card online while still in Germany and let them deliver it to your house in Amherst. Mint Sim is what most international students are using. It s very cheap compared to other companies in the US and coverage is not the best, but good enough. There are a few other things to do (signing up for classes, getting vaccinations,...) before you get to Amherst, but in my opinion Umass and the International Office did a great job providing all the information needed. Introduction/Orientation week The week before classes start, the IPO (International Programs Office) organized an orientation week for new international students. Most of them are not exchange students, but students (a lot of them from India, China, South America...) who are going to do their entire master s or PhD at Umass. All the European students that I met though, were on an exchange like us. Unfortunately, during this week, I was still busy looking at apartments, so I didn t have enough time to attend all the events the IPO had planed for us. I still went to a lot of them and I think it was a great way to get to know Umass, the campus, other (exchange) students and Amherst. The people working for the IPO are really helpful and they organize many events even throughout the semester, often providing free food or other cool stuff. 2
(Public) Transportation around Amherst Parking on campus (during the week) is expensive and you usually still have to walk about minutes or take a bus to the building you need to get to. Students in Amherst don t have to pay for the bus and there are several bus stops around campus, so you never have to walk too far. Monday through Friday buses run frequently, so even though I have a car, I usually take a bus to campus every day. On weekends and during breaks though, there is a reduced bus schedule and it can be difficult to get around. I m very glad I had the opportunity to buy a car and I d recommend it to anyone who has the chance to do so! It gives you so much freedom to do trips at the weekend and leave Amherst whenever you want. To all my fellow bike riders out there (which I m sure there are a lot in Freiburg): It is great to have a bike in Amherst and it is a great way to get around Amherst IN FALL. But winter is coming and winter here means more snow than in Freiburg. So (unless you re really tough) be prepared to leave the bike at home for at least a few weeks during winter. Studying As a math student, I am used to weekly homework and lots of work outside of classes. Some other exchange students though were surprised about the load of work they had to do every week. For a math student I d say the amount of work for a graduate course is about the same as a math class in Germany. But in my experience it was usually either easier or the professor was fairly benevolent in correcting it. So don t worry if not every paper or homework is your very best work; in my experience the expectations of the professors here are not as high as in Germany. Every single professor that I have dealt with at Umass, was incredibly helpful and nice about questions. Asking questions during and after class or going to office hours are extremely common. While I feel like professors in Germany sometimes tend to answer questions as fast as possible and try to deal with students as little as possible, most professors here actually enjoy teaching and they re happy to see that their students are interested. In my classes it was common to go to the professor s office hours and ask the professor himself, rather than the assistant, which for me would be the person to turn to in Germany. All of that obviously depends on your field of study, the course and on the professor. Class Schedule and typical weekday At Umass, classes are usually on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and 50 minutes each or on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 1 hour and 15 minutes (both add up to 2 hours and 30 minutes per week). So it s fairly easy to remember your schedule. 3
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Number Theory Number Theory Adv. Algorithms Adv. Algorithms Topics in Topics in Topics in Geometry Geometry Geometry Probability Probability Theory Theory I took 4 graduate courses, which I advise everybody NOT TO DO! Grad students are supposed to take 3 courses and that will be enough to keep you pretty busy. Umass offers plenty of room on campus to study and do homework. The big library (the big high-rise building you may have seen in pictures) and the Science and Engineering Library are the places I m using most. I think you will probably have less classes and more work to do at home. So your schedule will be pretty flexible and there will be lots of studying and working in between lectures. My schedule for the next semester will be less busy, as I m only taking 3 courses. Also, in both semesters, I never had a class past 2.15pm, but I know that this is different for people in other departments. Free time I joined a church, called Mercyhouse, soon after I arrived in Amherst. I met lots of great people there and I spend a good amount of my time there. Other than that, I made some trips to Six Flags New England (great place for any people who like roller coasters), went hiking around Amherst, had board game nights with friends, went apple picking,... I spent Thanksgiving with my roommate and some people from her department. She also invited me to celebrate Christmas with her family and so I flew to Texas at the end of the semester. The winter break here was very long (four and a half weeks compared to the two weeks we usually have in Freiburg) and it was awesome, cause there were no exams or papers that we had to work on during the break. So I went on a road trip for another week at the end of the break. I went to visit friends in upstate New York and Pennsylvania and also made a day trip to Washington DC. This time I spend in Texas, New York and Pennsylvania were definitely the highlight so far. It was great to experience the welcoming culture here. I probably got more 4
presents for Christmas than I did in the last few years. It was unbelievable how hospitable my roommate s family was! What I miss I really like it here and there are not many things that I miss. I do wish there was better bread here and not just the soft toast bread... I would also love to have some Maultaschen ;-) You can even buy Spaetzle at Aldi, but I haven t found any Maultaschen. Other than food, it was a little hard for me to connect with people. I miss having people around me that I really know and that really know me. Even though I ve made many friends here, is not the same as at home, where I can just go hang out with my best friends whenever I want to. Pictures Umass Hockey 5
