How was work? W: Frankly, it was difficult working in a nursing home because I usually don t clean and do laundry at home. M: Ah, that s why you look tired. We re opening a free tutoring service with native speakers of English from the Department of English Language and Literature. Our writing instructors will help you plan, edit, or revise your writing. If you want help with your essays, papers, and writing projects, you can make an appointment with us. We ll be open Monday through Friday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

8 MP3 W: Hi, Gilbert. What are you looking at? M: Oh, hi, Sally. I m looking at an advertisement for MP3 players. I want something that holds lots of songs and is not expensive. W: Well, this one holds more than 100 songs and this one holds over 200. M: Yeah, but I want more memory, if possible. Hey, look at this one. It can hold 400 songs and the price is good. W: It s nice, but this one is better. The advertisement says it holds over 800 songs. M: That one s too expensive. W: Oh, well, what about this one? It s really cheap. M: No. It only holds 100 songs. W: Do you really need to carry more than 100 songs? M: Are you kidding? I ride the bus for hours every day and I get bored quickly. I need something that can hold at least 400. W: So, what are you going to do? M: Umm... I ll get the one that can hold as many songs as possible and that I can afford.

9 W: Number 132, please. M: Ah, right here. W: How can I help you? M: Could you take a look at my cell phone? The screen is broken. W: Oh, how did this happen? M: I dropped it at the library. W: Ah, well, let me check. OK, we can repair it, but it ll be $ M: That sounds fine. How long will it take to repair it? W: It should be ready for pickup in about half an hour. M: Great. I m going to walk over to the coffee shop next door, and I ll be back in a while. W: OK. Here s your receipt.

10 [Telephone rings.] M: Hello? W: Hi, Michael. It s me, Jennifer. How s my puppy? M: He s fine. I took him for a walk in the park and he s sleeping now. W: Thanks for taking care of him. I ll be there to pick him up in an hour. I m going to take him to the animal hospital near your place for some shots. M: Oh, I see. If you re busy, I could take him there for you. W: No, I don t want to bother you. You ve already helped so much. M: Don t worry about it. It s really no trouble. W: Actually, I do have to go to the post office. If you could take him to the hospital, that would be great. M: No worries. Anything I can do to help would be my pleasure. W: You re a great friend!

W: Well, according to his evaluation form, he s good in the two categories of following instructions and working well with the team. Which skill do you think is essential to the position? M: Understanding the job. W: I agree. His evaluation says he s excellent in that category. M: I know. But... W: But, what? M: Well, the position also requires the ability to be a good leader. W: Hmm. I see your point. The form says he s poor in the category of leadership potential. But, if I were you, I d still focus on the essential requirement. M: Do you think so? W: Yeah. He s excellent in the category of positive attitude. So, you can train him in his weak area later. M: Sounds reasonable. Thanks for the help.

12 World Leader Contest W: Hello, class. I d like to announce the World Leader Contest which will be held on October 2nd. Let me explain briefly how to apply for the contest. You need to submit an application form and a letter of self-introduction to me by next Monday. Then, the selection committee will evaluate your application materials.
