I thought my eraser on a dowel as a replacement for a pencil was clever, but a hair dryer If I never put the wealth of information Bob provided in his segmented bowl demonstration to use, it will have been time well spent I now have an old hair dryer in the shop. This month is the annual tool sale and exchange. Bring our your unused, underused, unwanted, unknown tools and let s move them around. That widget that you don t know where you got, or even quite what it is may be just the thing I am seeking. For those of you who have been with us less than a full year, this is the Member to Member Market writ large. Additionally we will be having several demonstrations going on simultaneously; there will be something for everyone. No one has stepped up to be the Beads of Courage point person perhaps this is how you can help children in our community. We have been asked to sponsor a continuing Beads of Courage project, providing Bead Boxes to Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem. Scarlette Rouse scarletterouse@gmail.com is spearheading the project state wide and at the upcoming NC Symposium. We need someone to take it on here and work with Scarlette PLEASE RESPOND NEED VOLUNTEERS to help with the NC Woodturning symposium, Nov. 3-5 Need to have at least 2 people for each demonstration period to * assist demonstrator as needed * clean up after demo & prepare for next one * operate the TV camera Need several people to help unload the trailer and setup our demo room on Friday morning 9AM to 12 and take down Sunday afternoon 3PM until done. A signup sheet will be available at the October meeting. If you do not attend the meeting, you can still volunteer. Look at the demonstration Rotation Schedule and pick a time to be in room 4A. See / and click on the Rotations tab on the left side of the screen. Send Bob Muir (rmuir2@triad.rr.com) your name and time you are willing to work SYMPOSIUM! If you have never been to a symposium here is your opportunity to attend one of the best right in you back yard. Flyers are available at the meeting, more information is at and registration is on the site. The cost is $175 and includes: 63 separate demonstrations (nine rotations, seven rooms) with some of the best turners in the world and some of our own Lunch on Saturday Banquet on Saturday evening Lunch on Sunday A large, and growing vendors area

President s Challenge October: Apple Season in North Carolina! Apple festivals abound in North Carolina in September and October. They generally start on Labor Day weekend and continue through late October the latest one I see is October 21 in Waynesville. To celebrate this important part of our culture and economy here in the Piedmont and west, turn an apple. Big, little, stylized, traditional, natural, the choice is yours. November: How about something with a Thanksgiving theme? Turn a turkey or bring in that project that turned into a turkey and tells how it all went so terribly wrong! This table does not replace the annual equipment sale. Treasury report, $7000 in the account. Jim Terry received special recognition for his work for our club. Jim handles our web site, newsletter and communications as well as many other functions that make our club function. Bob Holtje will work on a project with a major wood supplier for the members to collectively purchase turning stock at club prices. The presentation for the night is by Bob Schasse on Segmented Turning. This is a more detailed step by step of his process. Bob included a video of his process as well as handouts. Then he demonstrated his process on the lathe. Jerry Jones Secretary Symposium Rotation Schedule: The last page of this newsletter contain the rotation schedule for the symposium. Look it over and plan your time at the symposium. If you have not registered yet, register soon or this is what you will be missing. August Minutes: Jim Barbour opened meeting with count of hands of Guilford County residents. Next month s Presidents challenge is Turn an Apple for the beginning of Fall. Guilford County residents present 12. Currently there are 130 members in our group.
