1 Newsletter December Minutes from the November Meeting: December 13 th Christmas Party 6:30PM at the Moose Café in the Farmers Market Vice President Jim Yarbrough opened our meeting Welcome to 5 guests was extended. Also 3 new members. Slate of 2012 officers were presented and voted unanimously (details under separate cover) Tip of the month was presented by Scot Conklin and Jim Barbour An excellent symposium wrap-up was presented by Bob Muir Treasurers report was presented by Bob Holtje Rita Duxbury reported that we have several overdue items in the Library Mike Thompson and George Sudermann presented the Gallery. Jim and Rita announced final plans for the Christmas party(details under separate cover) Bill Mericka offered some excellent turning wood to the group John Moehlmann and Doc Green held a great raffle again Jim Duxbury introduced our guest turner for the night. His face was instantly familiar although we had not met. It was Joe Herrmann, the editor of Woodturning Design. We see his picture in every issue. Joe is an award winning Teacher, Author, craftsman and several other titles. I could write volumes about him or you can visit his website: For his project this evening, Joe selected a project from a board. It is a 1 x 4 x 12. He begins by centering it on a screw chuck. You may need a spacer to prevent it from penetrating too deep. The side facing away from the headstock will be the bottom. It looks like he has a propeller mounted on the lathe. Joe starts the project by marking center and then creates the foot which will double as the chuck mounting when it is reversed. He sands the foot at this point. Then he uses a texturing tool to add nice details. Joe uses the fine parting tool to add a separation of the elements. It creates a shadow line. That is a detail I plan to use in the future! Joe begins shaping the propeller shape by cutting from the inside to outside rim. To make thing more consistent, he uses an Ogee pattern. He also points out; a good flexible French curve could be used to create our own designs. He makes several cuts and pauses to check progress. There is slight tear-out on the trailing edge of each wing but it is very minor and can be cleaned up with the next light cut and a small amount of sanding. Once the desired shape is achieved, he sands the wings to the desired grit and radiuses the edges. Time to reverse and cut the top side. Since he was very careful to measure the foot, it fits the chuck jaws almost perfectly. This is another good tip. When the diameter of the foot matches the diameter of the jaws, you get a perfect fit without using a great deal of pressure from the chuck. For those of us on the front row, we were very grateful. I forgot to mention, Joe uses his thumb to center the piece while tightening the jaws. This little fact helped it align with great precision.
2 Piedmont Triad Woodturners Association Newsletter December 2011 Page 2 Joe starts removing more stock. He matches the face to the back of the wings. It follows the ogee shape all the way down. As before, he stops and sands before proceeding to the center portion. He also relieves the edges. He shares a secret at this point. Relieving the edge has several advantages. Eliminates splinters, creates visual interest and allows the finish to adhere better. Now we are at the center. He is creating a bowl and highlights it by adding a bead. The bead can be simple round or a texture can be added or the carvers in the room can get real creative. Joe uses several customized tools such as Dick Sing point tool and rounded scrapers and radius skews but is quick to point out that many off the shelve tools will get you started and you can customized each as you see fit.. He shapes the bowl as we would on any bowl, just smaller. On this item he leaves a button in the bottom. This is decorative, but also allows some room just in case you are too close with your cuts from the bottom. He completed a wonderful project and mentioned that this project lends itself well to have an oil finish and deft lacquer once dry. Any chatoyance will pop out using this method. Having time left over, Joe honored us with a special project. He turned one of his award winning bread knives. He used solid wood centers with diamond type wood on the handles. The plans for this project are on his website for anyone who would like to duplicate further. He also showed us how he spring loads the arm before attaching the blade. This simple method has prevented any returns for having a loose blade. Joe concluded the evening with a few question and answers. Keep Turning Round, Lan Brady NC Symposium - Wrapup: I believe that the 2011 North Carolina Woodturning Symposium was a great success. There were about 325 registrants from far and wide, about 210 pieces were displayed in the Instant Gallery, 20 vendors presented and sold their wares (machines, tools, wood) in the Vendor Gallery, many people spent time on the hands-on lathe provided in the Turning and Learning Center by the Carolina Mountain Turners, and $7200 was produced by the auction after the Saturday evening banquet. It would not have been a success if it were not for all the volunteer efforts of very many people who are members of the nine woodturning clubs that make up the corporation. Our club was responsible for Demonstration Room 4A in which Alan Hollar and Alan Leland each presented one demonstration and our headline demonstrator Pascal Oudet presented 5 demonstrations. With the help of the following members of the PTWA everything ran smoothly: Scott Conklin, Bob Holtje, Gabby Gutierrez, Lan Brady, David McInnes, Kim Hutchins, Dean Hutchins, Mike Thompson, Jon Cowgill, Phil Atkins, Chuck Waldroup, John Moehlmann, John Morris, Tim Smith, and Jim Terry. Thank you all for this essential help. Saturday morning Kim and Dean brought a whole bunch of cookies for the enjoyment of the people who attended the demonstrations in our room. I understand that Kim s mother baked most or all of them Thanks, Mom! We could not have met the responsibility for our room if Scott Conklin, Mike Thompson, Jim Terry, John Moehlmann, and John Morris had not met at the Recreation Center to load up all our equipment to take to the Coliseum and then met again on Monday morning to put it all back into the Recreation Center. The use of John Morris tilt-bed trailer made it very easy to load and unload the lathe. We were met at the coliseum by Kim and Dean to help get the equipment into the room and get it set up and operational. Thank you all for your extra efforts on behalf of the PTWA. Special thanks go to Martha Hunter and Chris Roe! They have each worked during the last 3 Symposiums. Martha spent most of the three days at the registration table as an invaluable assistant to the NCWS Treasurer. Chris spent the three days in the Instant Gallery facilitating the record keeping of all the pieces presented for display. One of the features of the North Carolina Woodturning Symposium is that we provide housing in private homes for the headline demonstrators if they want it. Of course the homes need to be within a short driving time to the Coliseum, so it usually falls to members of our club to provide this service. This year Jim Barbour, Jim Yarborough, Ron & Chris Roe, Chuck Batherson, Charles Duckett, and Jim & Rita Duxbury served as Hosts of the headline demonstrators. In addition to providing bed & breakfast and entertainment for them their responsibilities involved meeting them at an airport (PTI or Raleigh) and returning them
3 Piedmont Triad Woodturners Association Newsletter December 2011 Page 3 to it and transporting them to and from the Coliseum each day. Those who have done this have reported that it was very enjoyable to get to know these demonstrators on a personal level. I express a very sincere thank you to you all for this service to the NCWS, Inc. If I have omitted naming anyone who contributed to our success I sincerely apologize and I am very grateful for your help. Please send any comments and/or suggestions for demonstrators for the 2013 symposium and/or for improving the Symposium to Bob Muir (rmuir2@triad.rr.com ) or Jim Barbour (jimbarbour@triad.rr.com).
