1 january 2010 NEWSLETTER From Chris corner Tips for Staying Warm Exposure to cold can cause life-threatening health conditions. Avoid serious conditions such as frostbite and hypothermia, by keeping warm. Wear a hat, hood, or scarf, as most heat is lost through the head. Wear layers, as they provide better insulation and warmth. Keep fingertips, earlobes, and noses covered if you go outside. Keep clothing dry; if a layer becomes wet, remove it. Safe Home Heating Tips Improper use of portable heating equipment can lead to fire or dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. Take precautions to ensure you are heating your home safely. FIRE SAFETY: Use only portable heating equipment that is approved for indoor use. Keep combustible materials, including furniture, drapes, and carpeting at least three feet away from the heat source. NEVER drape clothes over a space heater to dry. Always keep an eye on heating equipment. Never leave children alone in the room where a space heater is running. Turn it off when you are unable to closely monitor it. Be careful not to overload electrical circuits. Make sure you have a working smoke detector in every room. Check and change batteries often th Street Lathrop Senior Center Hours: M-F 9:00 AM 4:00 PM

Portions of the movie synopsis are from their respective video/dvd jackets. January 3rd Cowboys and Aliens (2011) The Old West.. where a lone cowboy leads an uprising against a terror from beyond our world. 1873, Arizona Territory, a stranger with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde (Ford). It s a town that lives in fear. But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known. Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he s been. January 10th Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) At the story s heart is Caesar (Andy Serkis), a chimpanzee who gains human-like intelligence and emotions from an experimental drug. Raised like a child by the drug s creator, Will Rodman (James Franco) and a primatologist, Caroline Aranha (Freida Pinto), Caesar ultimately finds himself taken from the humans he loves and imprisoned in an ape sanctuary in San Bruno. Seeking justice for his fellow inmates, Caesar gives the fellow apes the same drug that he inherited. He then assembles a simian army and escapes the sanctuary - putting man and ape on a collision course that could change the planet forever. January 17th Dolphin Tale (2011) A lonely and friendless boy finds and untangles a hurt dolphin that is caught in a crab trap. He becomes very attached to the dolphin when the tail must be taken off to save the dolphin s life. The boy believes the dolphin would be able to swim normally if it was given a prosthetic tail. January 24th Moon (2009) With only three weeks left in his three year contract, Sam Bell is getting anxious to finally return to Earth. He is the only occupant of a Moon-based manufacturing facility along with his computer and assistant, GERTY. The long period of time alone however has resulted in him talking to himself for the most part, or to his plants. Direct communication with Earth is not possible due to a long-standing communication malfunction but he does get an occasional message from his wife Tess. When he has an accident however, he wakens to find that he is not alone. He also comes to realize that his world is not what he thought it was. January 31st Real Steel (2011) In the near future, robots have taken over for humans in the boxing ring. A former boxer and small-time promoter (Hugh Jackman) struggles to make a living with patched-up robots in shady venues. When he discovers he has an 11-year-old son who believes that a robot found in the junk heap has what it takes to win, he finds himself with a shot at the big time. l a t h r o p 7 S e n i o r c e n t e r N e w s l e t t e r
