1 33cm Transverter Kit DEM Part Number Operatinal Overview The DEM is a 33cm t 2M transmit and receive cnverter. The has a linear utput pwer f apprximately 10 watts. On the receive side, a GaAsFET preamplifier, and interdigital filters prvide a sensitive frnt end with excellent ut f band signal rejectin. The DEM has a built in transmit / receive relay. Optins have been prvided fr a key line input (+1 t 15VDC TTL r PTT t grund) and auxiliary cntacts n either transmit r receive with a cmmn line fr many applicatins. The 2M IF levels are adjustable n bth transmit and receive and have a dynamic range f apprximately 25dB. This is very useful fr adjusting yur maximum utput pwer and setting the "S" meter level n yur IF receiver. IF cnnectins are via BNC cnnectrs. The cntrl, pwer, and auxiliary cnnectins are via RCA jacks, and the 33cm cnnectrs are Type 'N' r BNC (user chice). The is hused in a 8.7" x 5.7" x 2.2" aluminum die cast bx. 2 Printed Circuit Assembly Ntes: Yur kit is prvided with easy t read placement diagrams that shw the cmpnent layut and the reference designatrs that crrespnd t the prvided cmpnent list. Each side f the printed circuit bard (PCB) is als shwn t eliminate mirrr image assembly errrs. Assembly Tips: Sldering surface munted active cmpnents (transistrs etc.): The DOTS n the MMICs (IC1- IC6 and IC8) determine their rientatin and must be bserved and psitined crrectly prir t sldering. The GaAsFET (Q4) angle cut lead r dt is the Gate side which crrespnds t the "G" n the assembly diagram (See Figure 1). Leads n all active surface munted cmpnents shuld be smewhat flat against the munting surface, if they are nt, a small tl such as a small bladed screw driver can be used t flatten them. (See Figure 2). Align the cmpnent in the prper psitin based n the assembly diagram, ensure that the leads are placed n the circuit trace and d nt ver hang it. Hlding the cmpnent in place, slder ne lead t the circuit and bserve the alignment f all leads. If the alignment is acceptable, slder the remaining leads. Yu need enugh slder t cver the lead and munting surface fr the entire lead length. Additinal amunts results in a smaller slder rll! (See Figure 2 shaded areas) Gate Cut Lead may be cut at an angle 101 Q4 Figure 1 Leads flat t trace, 4 places Sme spring back is OK Slder shwn in shaded areas Slder full length f lead, 4 places PCB Trace Figure 2. Typical side view f fur leaded surface munted device, lead bending clse t bdy Sldering surface munted passive cmpnents (chip resistrs / capacitrs): Determine the cmpnent munting psitin based n the assembly diagram. Withut the cmpnent in place, heat ne side f the munting area and flw a small amunt f slder n it. Place the cmpnent in the crrect psitin per the assembly diagram, it shuld nw have ne end ver the previusly melted slder. Hlding the cmpnent in place with tweezers r ther sldering aid, heat the end with the previusly melted slder and allw it t flw int the slder, nce slidified, remve hlding tl. Nw heat and flw slder t the ther side f the cmpnent and yur dne! DEM Revisin D 8/15/2011 Page 2

3 Sldering leaded cmpnents (resistrs, capacitrs, dides, etc.): Depending n yur available tls, yu can slder yur transverter's leaded cmpnents frm either the tp r bttm f the PCB. It is suggested fr the hme assembler t use a methd that is cmfrtable. A simple hlding vise can be utilized t allw the cmpnents t be 'drpped in' frm the tp side and sldered n this side withut flipping ver the assembly. As an alternate methd, yu can insert ne cmpnent at a time in the crrect munting lcatin and gently push dwn t the circuit bard, while hlding the cmpnent, flip ver the circuit bard and bend the leads ver in ppsite directin t hld the cmpnent in place. Althugh this is the mst reliable methd, there are sme draw backs if the cmpnent must be remved when the PCB is installed in the bx. Rewrk f sldered cmpnents if needed: The easiest methd t rewrk sldered cmpnents is t emply a desldering braid that is specifically designed fr this purpse. It can be purchased at mst electrnics cmpnent distributrs. Place the desldering braid n the lead that yu are remving and apply heat t it. Withut excessive pressure the slder will melt and flw int the braid leaving the lead r cmpnent ready t be remved. The DEM is fairly easy and fun t assemble even fr the first time kit builder and can be cmpleted in any rder that is cmfrtable, hwever DEM Inc. suggests the fllwing assembly prcedure t minimize errrs and pssible frustratin. Surface Munt Cmpnent Suggested Assembly: The assembly peratin shuld begin by rienting the PCB with the assembly diagram. Crrect rientatin can be determined by bserving the ntches n the lng sides f the PCB. The fllwing assembly rder is suggested: Observed plarity using either the DOTS r lead cnfiguratin as explained in the Assembly Tips sectin. 1. Install and slder Q4. See diagram n page 4, step 10 fr prper rientatin f gate lead. 2. Install and slder the balance f the surface munted active cmpnents IC1 - IC6, IC8. Observe yur sldering and cmpnent rientatin ne mre time t ensure everything is crrect. L1, L3 - L6, L10 - L13, L16, L19 must be frmed prir t installatin. The cils shuld be wund arund an apprpriate size mandrel, such as a drill bit. Winding cils is nt an exact science and yu shuld nt be intimidated by it. Using the supplied specified gauge wire (see cmpnent list), extend abut ¼" in a perpendicular directin ff f the mandrel and wind the wire arund it, cunting each revlutin as ne turn. When the ttal number f turns is cmpleted (see the cmpnent list) cut the wire an additinal ¼" beynd the mandrel. Frm the tw ¼" leads s they are pinting in the directin as shwn in the detail belw. 1/4" Slder Tinned Area Slder Tinned Area 1/4" End view f frmed cil Tp view f nrmally frmed cil, (4 turns shwn) Dress the turns tgether if they are ut f shape frm winding, remve the cil frm the mandrel. The cil frming is cmplete! T ensure a psitive slder cnnectin, the ¼" leads shuld have the enamel insulatin remved prir t sldering. This can be accmplished by applying slder t a ht sldering irn tip and placing the lead in the mlten slder, yu will see the insulatin bubble indicating that it has melted (The tinned lead shuld be a silver clr indicating that the insulatin has been remved and the slder has tinned the base metal, if nt repeat the prcess). As an alternative, the enamel can be remved by scraping the ¼" leads with a razr blade until the base cpper is expsed. Slder cat the expsed base cpper. DEM Revisin D 8/15/2011 Page 3
