1 An Affiliated Chapter of Society of Decorative Painters Volumn 12, Issue 07 July 2018 Exert from SDP June EZine: Forever in My Heart By Debbie Cole, CDA I am so excited to be the 2018/19 Chairman of the Education Committee. We have so much planned this year and will be bringing on many new videos and e-packets so that individual members and chapters can have additional education as a benefit for being a member of our society. First I want to share about the newest project that was launched at the Chapters Gathering during our conference. I created this Forever In My Heart project so that chapters can use it as a meeting project, to teacher new members, and as a memory box project. It is created using a Stampendous stamp set which includes the stencil that created the lattice on the project. There are three videos and a PDF for this project. The PDF explains how to get the supplies for the project while the videos have the complete lesson on how to paint the project. To view them go to the Society s website at then click on EDUCATIONAL LIBRARY, scroll down and Click on MEMBERS ONLY, a new page will come up to prompt you to sign in. Sign in and the Members Only page will come up. Simply scroll down and click on MEMORY BOX PROJECTS. We also have some amazing videos and I would like to spotlight the Lessons that are already available for all of our members. A course for Beginners Part One and Part Two by Mary Gibilisco, CDA. In these videos Mary discusses the basics of creating a still life in oils. She covers how to prove a design, how to mix a grey scale, basics on painting with oils, how to blend, and much more. This is a perfect video for anyone to learn how to paint in oils. Spring Tulip by Paula Leopold, CDA. In this video Paula discusses the basics of painting with water color including many basic tips, how to tone July

2 colors, how to paint wet into wet, how to build shades, and much more. This video is a perfect lesson for a beginning watercolor painter and Paula makes painting with water color very easy. Autumn Leaf Study by Mary Gibilisco, CDA. In this video Mary explores how to work a complimentary color scheme, shadow work, and how to co-ordinate a painting that has complimentary colors. It is a lovely intermediate to advance oil project. Red Rose with Bud by Louise Jackson, MDA. This is an intermediate to advanced water color painting focusing on how to create a realistic red rose. She covers how to do an under painting, how to block in shades and blend them out, how to form each petal s shape, how the water and paper work for you as you paint, how to control water color and overcome the challenges of this medium, and much more. Louise has a way that makes water color easy and I am sure you will love this video. Summer Compliments: A Study on Watermelon and Strawberries by Paula Leopold CDA. This is a breathtaking still life using colored pencils. In the video Paula discusses different types of paper, proper pressure while using the pencils, layering, how to gently blend colors, how to create the texture of the watermelon, burnishing with colored pencils, and much more. This is a lovely project for the intermediate and advanced student. Fox in a Winter Meadow by Paula Leopold CDA. This is an intermediate water color lesson where Paula demonstrates how to create an easy sky background, how to paint evergreens, how to create depth within a landscape, how to paint the trees and fox, and how to fine tune your painting, plus much more. Paula is such an amazing teacher and this lesson is filled with tips and techniques that can be applied to any water color painting. Grapes and Crock Still Life by Mary Gibilisco CDA and Ann Kingslan MDA. For anyone wanting to learn how to paint realistic grapes this is a wonderful lesson. First Mary shows how to create form for each grape with an under painting, then she demonstrates how to glaze the color. There are many tips and techniques included while painting this beautiful still life. This is an intermediate to advanced oil painting. Study: Watermelon & Drops Still Life by Mary Gibilisco CDA. In this video Mary discusses how to create the form and texture of a watermelon while also making it look translucent. She also demonstrates how to create a reflection onto a shiny surface and adding transparent water drops. This is an intermediate to advanced lesson for oil painters. To view these Lesson videos go to the Society s website at then click on EDUCATIONAL LIBRARY, scroll down and Click on MEMBERS ONLY, a new page will come up to prompt you to sign in. Sign in and the Members Only page will come up. Simply scroll down and click on LESSONS. One thing to remember is each video lesson would cost each member at least $25.00 per DVD lesson and we already have nine lessons including the Always In My Heart project that was added this month. That would be a cost of $ and we can watch it for FREE as many times as we want without any deadlines! Spread the news and use these lessons at your chapters meetings. July

Guests are welcome to attend a meeting to see what we are all about before deciding on membership. Chapter membership is open to all members of Society of Decorative Painters. You can find more information on SDP at decorativepainters.org. ODA chapter dues for 2018 are $25/year. ODA Board meetings for 2018 will be held immediately before the general meetings, beginning at 9:00am. All Board members are asked to make every effort to attend these meetings. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway (St. Rd. 192) Kissimmee, Fl July 21, 2018 Christmas In July Debbie Smith, Instructor Prep instructions for workshop: Supplies: 13 charger, plastic, wood or metal Printed cotton fabric: Fabrics with a muted design seem to work the best, any color. This project is geared toward Christmas in July so you may want a Christmas themed design. 1/2 yard will give enough fabric for two plates. You do not have to pre-wash the fabric but be sure it is smooth. It would be best to iron the piece after it is cut to size to avoid fighting any creases. Lay the plate upside down on the fabric, leave about an inch to an inch and half border and cut out. Decoupage glue Sealer, matte finish. Sponge brush Using a sponge brush, apply a layer of sealer to the surface that the fabric will be applied to. Lay the fabric over the surface and smooth out all wrinkles. I used a scraper tool to secure the fabric into the indention of the plate. Start in the middle and gently work out to the edge to smooth out bubbles and creases. You will be able to lift the fabric while smoothing but be pretty quick. This will start to adhere pretty fast. After it is on smooth and is dry, apply another layer of sealer over the fabric. After the surface is completely dry trim off the excess. One way is to lay the surface upside and cut off excess with an exacto knife or scissors. Another way is to use an emory board and file off the excess. I have found using a metal file a little easier but any type will work. File in a downward motion at the edge of surface. Then using the fine surface of the file, go around the surface one more time to smooth out the raw edge. ***At the June meeting, Jill will be demonstrating this technique.
