2 Tin Pocket with Leaves Lesson Plan A Double Split Complement Painting The double split complement color scheme uses three colors. In the triadic, the colours are equally spaced on the colour wheel. In the double split complement, the colours are selected by first finding the complement. In this case the two main colours are red (strawberry and neutralized container) and green (leaves). These two colours are complements. Choose one colour and then on the colour wheel split on either side for the double split. For example, red s split complement is blue-green and yellow-green. Green was eliminated and the two colours on either side of green are selected.. 3 Royal Gray graphite transfer paper Royal Stylus Paper Towels, and other ordinary supplies JWEtc Gloss Varnish or Genesis Heat Set Varnish Royal Roller Brush Sources Tin Pocket, Brushes and Paints (all available at Kingslan & Gibilisco Decorative Arts 920 S. 107 th Ave., #102 Omaha, NE Voice and Fax: 402/ Preparation Heat set the tin prior to painting. This will remove any hidden moisture or inert chemicals. Otherwise, no preparation is needed. Transfer the Design Trace the design onto tracing paper, slip the gray graphite between the tracing and the surface and with very light pressure transfer the entire design. Plant Holder Value Scale (Neutralized Red) The plant holder scale is a neutral red scale made with either the Genesis Flesh Value Scale or Burnt Umber and Red (both from the red family). The overall color is very muted or quiet. Due to its size, the holder must be dull in color otherwise it would dominate the piece. Referencing the value placement guide, lay in the values as indicated. Medium: GR + BU + a small amount of TW (or Flesh Value 05) Light: Medium Mix + RS + TW (or Flesh Value 06) High Light: Light Mix + TW (or Flesh Value 07) Dark: Medium Mix + BU (or Flesh Value 04) Low Dark: Dark Mix + BLK (or Flesh Value 03) The Value Placement Chart defines Light, Medium and Dark Mixes. If the Light needs to be increased in value, add High Light. If this isn t light enough add Warm White (TW + a small amount of GY). The same is true for the dark side. Increase the dark tones by progressing from High Dark to Dark and if the dark tone needs to be darkened, then add Blk. Leaf Scale The first step is to create a green value scale. With TW + Blk, mix a value scale of gray ranging from light in value to very dark in value. (The Genesis Value scale of Gray may be used.) To this value scale of gray, add yellow to each value. This should shift each gray to a muted gray-green colour. Divide each of these values in half and move them over on the palette. To this new value scale, add UB. This will shift each value over to a Blue-Green Leaf scale.

4 To create the leaves, reference the step sheet. Develop each leaf individually. Strive for variety in value (light vs. dark), intensity (dull vs. bright), hue (blue-green vs. yellow-green). This will give a unified but diverse appearance to the piece. Strawberry The addition of the strawberries adds a much needed accent of colour. Notice that the red of strawberry is repeated in the leaves. Create using the value scale below. Reference the step sheet. Medium: Light: High Light: Dark: Low Dark: GR + QC + TW Medium Mix + TW (add GR if too pink) Light Mix + TW Medium Mix + QC Dark Mix + QC + UB Dry the painting. Character markings Add the chips and dirty marks into the plant holder with BU + Black. Enhance the dark values The left side and the indentations on the plant holder may need to be darker. Make the dark section darker by applying a minute amount of Glazing Gel to the dark section. Add Mars Black + a small amount of Burnt Umber into the gel. Blend out the right side of this new dark area with a #1 mop. Don t end up with a stripe on the edge of this new value. Shines With a #2 flat, add shines with Warm White in the highlight area of the plant holder and the strawberry. This will show where the light is directly striking the object. This light should be opaque but smaller than the original light area. If necessary, blend the highlight using the #0 mop. Reflected light Add reflected light on the left side of the strawberry and plant holder. This is to show where light has bounced or reflected off another area. Load a #6 flat with TW + PB. Using just a dirty brush, scumble or dry brush on this reflected light. It is brightest right on the outside edge. Finishing Steps Shadows Add the shadow to the left of each object using Blk + BU. Thin with Glazing Gel so as to retain the transparent appearance of the shadows. Varnishing Fill the Squeeze-N-Flo Brush with Gloss Varnish and apply the first coat. This initial coat may separate but don t be concerned as this fills in with subsequent applications. Place the brush and bottle in a plastic bag between coats. Several coats of varnish may be applied. After about four coats sand lightly with 1500 Wet/Dry Sandpaper that has been soaked in water. This will remove impurities and level the finish. Apply one final coat of varnish. The varnish should be returned to its original container and the brush and bottle cleaned thoroughly before storing.
