2 Step 1 Marking up the scene. Using the first image in this PDF as reference draw up the image with a pencil onto your chosen canvas as best you can. You can draw it in directly or you might like to use the grid system, tracing paper transferral or an over head projector. What ever method you chose do not go on to the next step until you are happy with the drawing. Next take some lamp Black acrylic and using a liner brush paint over all your pencil line work. Let this Dry. Step 2 Creating the under painting. Onto a palette squeeze out some Lemon Yellow, Yellow Orange and Scarlet Red all in the Silver Series Acrylic range. Starting at the top of the canvas, using the largest flat brush lay in some Scarlet Red and work down till you have covered 1/4 of the canvas. Next apply the Yellow Orange roughly blend it into the Scarlet and continue down till you reach the half way point. Next apply some Lemon Yellow. Blend this roughly into the orange making sure that the colour is fairly pure by the time you reach the bottom of the canvas. Acrylic paint dries very quickly. If you are covering a large area you will need to give it a spray with a little water from time to time to keep the paint open..

3 Step 3 NOTE: ADULT SUPERVISION REQUIRED Adding the Budgicorn. Take the second image of the budgicorn in this PDF. Print it out to the size that suits your canvas. Lay it down on an appropriate cutting matt and using a hobby knife profile cut the Budgicorn. With blue tac position the positive onto the canvas in the desired position. Next lay the negative over the positive and remove the positive. Squeeze out some Lemon Yellow and Light Green and blend them in equal proportions. Apply this colour with a 50 mm sponge roller. Carefully remove the stencil. Let this dry. Next refer to the PDF again and using a liner brush reproduce those key lines of the Budgicorn onto the yellow/green base. Step 4 Top coating the background. Squeeze out some Titanium White, Crimson Red, Cadmium Red, Orange Red and Yellow Medium. In this stage, re-create the under painting that was done in Acrylic paint with the these specified colours. Start with the Crimson, move to the Cadmium Red, the Orange Red and finally the Yellow Medium and then to Light Yellow. Add some white into the bottom of the sky between the mountains and lightly blend it in to the background coat. Don t over blend it.. Mix in a little Linseed Oil so that the paint is a translucent. Next refer to the third image in the PDF, the moon. Using a medium filbert lay a dirty Yellow made from Lemon Yellow and Titanium White on the top crescent of the moon. Next roughly blend in some Orange Red and then some Crimson down the bottom. Make sure you leave the very bottom of the moon free of colour so it fades seamlessly into the background. Finally lay some pure white into the very top part of the moon to suggest Step 5 Creating the Ventura. Refer to the fourth image in the PDF, This is the tonal range to re-create. Squeeze out some Ivory Black and Titanium White. First create a mid grey and coat the entire figure. While this is still open, lay in your darks with a darker grey and blend it into the mid grey. Then lay in some pure white into the highlight areas and blend this in. Again be careful not to over blend and keep the tonal transitions smooth.

4 Step 6 Top coating the Budgicorn. Using the finest brush paint the horn, eye surround and the beak in Titanium White. Next lay some Lemon Yellow into the head area and blend it out into the green of the Budgicorn as you move down the body. Paint some ultramarine blue into the cheek area. Next mix a darker green from Ultramarine and Lemon Yellow. Make this Green a tone lighter than the body and paint it into the shadow areas. Step 7 Creating the foreground. The foreground is the closest element to the viewer and this can be reinforced by using an impasto style of paint application. I m using a palette knife to add this thick paint. Use the edge of the knife to create a thin line. To create the little round alien flowers dip the handle end of the brush in to some Cadmium Red and transfer the paint in spots. Step 8 Glazing the head. This step can only be commenced f the tonal under painting is dry. If it is dry, squeeze onto your palette some Olive Green, Monastral Green and Permanent Green. Dip a medium round into the Linseed Medium and then into the paint and paint in the hair area. The ratio is roughly 1 part medium to 1 part paint, just make sure the under painting beneath is still visible. Once the medium is added you will find the paint goes a long way. Keep the coat as consistent as you can in thickness. Once the hair is done create a mix of 1 part medium to 1 part Monasteral Green. Paint this mixture over the face, again make the coat thin and consistent. Next paint the lips in with the Permanent green. Use the finest brush for this and add some freckles while you are at it. Try to be subtle with the paint application. The last step is the eye. Paint this in with pure Violet. Blend a little Titanium in to the middle, add a spot of Black for the pupil and finally add a spot of pure white as a highlight.

5 Step 9 Glazing the Body. The paint application on the body is to be handled in the same way in regards to mixing ratios of paint to the medium. Use a large flat Taklon for this as it is easier to create an even coat. The other thing to bare in mind with this paint application is that I have created a two tone colour scheme. Where the back side of the body is Permanent Green and the front side is Monastrral Green. Apply the colours in blocks so the two colours are adjacent with each other and with a soft Taklon brush, blend them. One thing to remember is when one applies a glaze is to use the brush on an angle so that the flat side part of the brush makes contact. This way the paint is spread more evenly and the chance of unsightly brush strokes are minimised. Depending on the thickness of the coat, Oil paint will take from 3 to 7 days to be touch dry. But to cure it can take up to 6 months. Pale boiled Linseed oil is a good general purpose Medium for thinning paint as well as for glazing.....until next time Keep on creating

10 This whimsical art work was created like most fantasy art, with amusment in mind and we thought we might create a facetious little back story that might just explain it a little more. It all seemed so surreal. Tahalula had seen her planet orbit the sun only 5 times in her life when the great war had begun and jargooshvarder troops had come and taken away poor little Meekon the family Budgiecorn for scientific research. The brutal war had savagely raged for 22 long years and, was at last over, and a capricious peace treaty had finally been met. As a show of good faith both empires had agreed to release any prisoners of war that had been taken. Tahlula had lost her entire family in the ensuing conflict and as the two finally met again after all these years... Not a single word was spoken, yet that silence spoke volumes. What the future might hold was uncertain but at least... they were reunited.
