The first step is the form, the second and third are embellishments. The codes for the values are:... = Light (L) and/or building up to Highlight (HL) //// = High (HD) and/or going down to (D) XXXX = Low (LD) blank = ium (M) Value Placement Guide These guides are illustrated throughout this lessons and will show how to create the form of each object. The light source is from the upper left, slightly in front. The light areas will be on the left and above the center line. The dark areas will be on the right and become gradually darker as the object recedes from the light. Mixing Formulas Formulae for mixing is given throughout this lesson. You will find that the mixes for the hue are given first. This is followed by a colour that will raise or lower the value. Once the value and colour are mixed, the next addition usually is meant to either brighten or dull the colour. Finally, a colour may need to be mixed into the pile that will adjust the temperature. 3 Farm to Canvas to Table: Apple Cider Still Life Surface: 11 x 14 Masonite. Prep with DecoArt French Blue Grey Transfer Information Trace the line drawing in using a 4H or mechanical pencil. (A 4H pencil is a hard leaded pencil therefore it will not smear or need sharpening as often as a standard one.) Tape the tracing on two or three sides, then slip the graphite transfer paper between and re-trace lines to transfer. Table Base the table top with RS. Base the thickness of the table with RS + BU. 5 Stage Two Final Shines By reviewing and referencing the photo, add the primary shines with WW on the objects. With a #0 flat, add shines in the highlight area of each object. This will show where the light is directly striking the object. This light should be opaque but smaller than the original light area. If necessary, blend the highlight using the #0 mop. This is present only on the upper right of each object. Reflected Light and Color Add reflected light on the left side of objects using Blue tint (PB + TW) Add this as a scumble. A scumble is an irregular application of paint applied over a dried under painting. Load a #4 flat with the Blue Tint, wipe the majority of the paint out of the brush and apply the residue. It is mainly found on the left side of the objects to help pull the object out of the background. Reference the photo for placement. Details Spatter pitcher with BU using a stiff bristle brush and thinned down paint. Add dirty marks and chips to pitcher with Black and/or Black + BU. Add reflection of the apple (with R) and table (with RS) to pitcher. Add table reflection into apple. Add stem to apple with BU, shade the left side with Black. Highlight with Warm White. Add RS to spoon to make it appear worn. Review photo as reference to place shadow Add shadows with Blk thinned with an extender. To increase opacity next to the object, add non-diluted Blk on top of the previous application. Remember that shadows have the following characteristics - Shadows: are created only when there is light and the light is interrupted are created only when there is a receiver for the shadow such as the table are transparent cast color when object is coloured glass or coloured liquid follow the contour of the receiver are in the shape of the object that creates the shadow have at least three optical value changes are darker closer to the object that creates the shadow are relatively horizontal in nature so as to correspond with the shape of the table but curve when following the contour or the receiver. 38 Farm to Canvas to Table Series

8 Prep time: 15 mins Cook time: 3 hours and 20 mins Ready in 7 hours and 35 mins Makes 1 gallon Homemade Apple Cider Ingredients 10 apples, quartered 3/4 cup white sugar 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon 1 tablespoon ground allspice Directions Place apples in a large stockpot and add enough water cover by at least 2 inches. Stir in sugar, cinnamon, and allspice. Bring to a boil. Boil, uncovered, for 1 hour. Cover pot, reduce heat, and simmer for 2 hours. Strain apple mixture though a fine mesh sieve. Discard solids. Drain cider again though a cheesecloth lined sieve. Refrigerate until cold or serve as a hot beverage. 41 Farm to Canvas to Table Series
