Drawing an Apple in Coloured Pencil -- Michael Spillane Apple Botanical Illustration -- Lesson Plan Apple in coloured pencil -- 9 x 9 inches Arches 240 lb hot-pressed watercolour paper taped to a masonite board Prismacolor coloured pencils Step 1 (below left) Draw a clear outline drawing of an apple and then establish a tonal base as shown using a 2H graphite pencil and pointed blending stump. Step 2 (below right) Lightly fix the drawing with workable fixative then apply a light base of Deco Yellow (1011) and burnish with white. Finished Drawing 1 Burnishing means layering multiple colours one on top of another and then applying heavy pressure with a white (or lighter colour) pencil to break down the surface layers (and tooth of the paper) to create vibrant colours and to give a glazed effect to the drawing. 2
2 3 Step 3 (left) 1) Apply a layer of Yellow Ochre (942) followed by Deco Yellow again. Burnish with white. 2) Add Limepeel (1005) to the dip of the apple (where the stem arises from). Blend with a colorless blender. 3) Apply Dark Umber (947) over the graphite base on the stem and blend with a pointed stump. Apply a layer of Yellow Ochre over the same and burnish with white. 4) Shadow at the base of the apple -- Apply Yellow Ochre then Cool Grey 50% and burnish with white. Step 4 (right) 1) Apply Poppy Red (922) over the red areas of the apple using a "mottling" (or scribble) technique and allowing white and yellow highlights to show through the red. Vary the intensity of the red over the yellow areas as you progress. Burnish with Yellow Ochre and white in the light to yellow areas. 2) Add Poppy Red and Yellow Ochre to the shadow of the apple and burnish with Cool Grey 20%. 3) Gently lift out reflected light at the base of the apple close to the shadow. Apply Yellow Ochre and Violet (932), then burnish with white. Apply another layer of Yellow Ochre and burnish with white. 4) Use a sharp pointed white pencil to add tiny highlights over the skin and also inside the water droplets. 5) Continue to define the red areas of the apple with more Poppy Red. 4
3 5 Step 5 (left) 1) Deepen the shading tone on the apple with a Warm Grey 50% (1054) and Green Ochre (1001). Blend with a colourless blender. 2) Continue the red and orange areas of the apple with Poppy Red, burnishing with Yellow Ochre as before. 3) Apply Scarlet Lake over the red areas (923), again with a random mottling technique (not covering all the orange and highlight areas). Vary the intensity of the red over the yellow and orange-red areas. 4) Deepen the shading on the apple with Violet and Cool Grey 70%. Blend over the shadow with a colourless blender and burnish with white in the highlight areas. (No grey in highlight area, only violet.) 5) Apply Dark Green (908) over the shading and Green Ochre (1091) more into the yellow and lighter areas. Overlay lightly with Poppy Red. 6) Apply Indigo Blue (901) (sparingly) in the darkest shade tones and, again, overlay with Poppy Red and Green Ochre. 7) Apply Violet and Yellow Ochre over the base shadow and burnish with white. Step 6 (left) 1) Deepen the red areas of the apple with Scarlet Lake. 2) Apply Green Ochre to the darker tones, blending as you go. 3) Burnish with Yellow Ochre in the green/ yellow/orange areas and white in the lighter areas. 4) Start applying Crimson Red (924) over the darker areas of red and burnish with Scarlet Lake. 5) Apply Dark Green (908) into the shadows..
4 7 Step 7 (left) Lightly fix the drawing with workable fixative before applying the next layer. 1) Continue to deepen shadow tones on the skin of the apple. Apply Indigo Blue (901), Crimson Red, Dark Green and Sepia (948). 2) Burnish the lighter areas of the apple with various tones of Green Ochre, Scarlet Lake, Poppy Red and Crimson Red. 3) Reflecting highlight: Layer with Violet, Cool Grey 70%, various red and green tones (lightly), and burnish with white (repeat this several times). 4) Continue to darken (as above) and add Indigo Blue, Crimson Red and Dark Green to the darkest areas. Step 8 (right) 1) Continue developing the shadow base of the apple with light layers of Yellow Ochre, Indigo Blue, Cool Grey (70%), Green Ochre, Dark Green and Sepia. Burnish in the light areas with white. 2) Continue toning and detailing with the same range of reds and yellows. 8 3) With a fine-pointed (#1) soft brush and white Gouache (opaque watercolour paint), carefully brighten the highlights and water droplets.
5 Finished Drawing: Apple in Coloured Pencil 9 x 9 inches Supplies used in the Project 1 sheet Arches 240 hot-pressed watercolour paper 1 sheet of masonite board (big enough to fit paper size) Low-tac masking tape Graphite pencils: 2H & H Kneaded eraser and pencil eraser Selection of blending stumps and soft makeup brush Krylon workable fixative spray White Gouache and a #1 soft pointed brush Prismacolor Coloured Pencils: Prismacolor Colorless Blender PC1077 Deco Yellow 1011 Yellow Ochre 942 Limepeel 1005 Cool Grey 20%, 50%, & 70% Warm Grey 50% Dark Umber 947 Poppy Red 922 Scarlet Lake 923 Crimson Red 924 Violet 932 Green Ochre 1001 Dark Green 908 Indigo Blue 901 Sepia 948 White
