3 Masking Mask inside main petals as shown Background Using a number 10 brush mix Dark Green with Natural Blue and Aureolin Aureolin Dioxene Violet with tiny bit of Crimson Work in sections wet into wet Start on the right side with the green first and then the yellow. Feather away Darken the outline with the strong green colour and a small brush Next do the bottom section again with the green first work up to the corners. Drop in the yellow to add brightness work in and fade out. Now do the left side in the same way but here you can add the pinky purple colour with a small brush and scribble it in. Pull it all out with a damp brush. Darken the petal corners with a small brush and the dark green to outline them. Leave to dry then rub masking off. 3

4 Flower Pale and watery colours as follows Lemon Yellow with Cadmium Red to give an orangey colour (Mix a lot) Lemon Yellow Alizarin Crimson or Rose Madder Wet the paper and paint carefully round the edge so that the green does not bleed into the flower. Start with the orange and fade out to the edge. Work in the lemon yellow and paint the pink in the middle. With a damp brush work paint to the edges. Squeeze the brush dry and take out highlights as shown and also along the stamens. 4

5 Separations With a number 6 brush mix Lemon Yellow and Alizarin Crimson Use the pale orange mixed before for blending. Work in the direction of the petal. With the main colour darken at the back of the petal and blend out with the pale orange, blend further out with water. Continue in the same manner with the other petals always darkening at the back of the top petal. From the centre outline the stamens and blend away with watery orange. Highlights Use a chisel brush to wash out highlights along the edges of the petals and one side of the stamens (to make them appear rounded) Shadows Use a number 6 brush to mix Yellow Ochre and Alizarin Crimson to make a dark reddish orange colour. Use the main picture as a guide and work on the dark part of the petal (not too thin a line) and blend away with a damp brush and water following the shape of the petal. Identify other petals using the same method. Separate between the stamens 5

6 Raindrops Make sure the picture is dry and mask off the shape of the raindrops with masking fluid. Dry off thoroughly Washes Use a number 12 brush and mix Orange from Lemon Yellow plus Cadmium Red (not too thick) Start at the top of the large petal and scribble in with a damp brush blending out keeping the centre and edges of the petal light. Now paint the bottom of the petal in the same way and work to the middle. Continue with the other petals and layer up the colour. Add this glaze to any areas that need more colour. Paint the centre vein in the main petal with the same colour and other veins in the same way Drop Shadows Mix Yellow Ochre plus Alizarin Crimson and a little bit of Natural blue. Use a number 4 or a Rigger Brush and paint an L shaped line around the dark side of the raindrop and soften down. You can paint a few at a time and smudge back and feather off before the paint dries. When completely dry carefully remove masking fluid. 6
