Wynne Before the Storm Painting Atmosphere with Rae Smith, PSA Master October 21, 2012 March 2-3, 2013 Be inspired and informed by the se of photograph references, landscape, still life, portrait or natre stdy, while avoiding being dependent pon the photographic image. The two class sessions will be York City Noctrnes New with Janet A. Cook, PSA This two day workshop will be a hands-on experience where artists can explore pastels sing techniqes Somers has learned throgh his career. Dry washes, adding and removing color, sing pastels as a wet medim and sing color fields as part of composition are some of the things that will be covered. Demonstrations will focs on both his techniqes and the thoght process he follows as he develops his paintings. Spend a day painting atmosphere all kinds of atmosphere! Whether it s a stormy day, a misty day or twilight, there are all sorts of techniqes to consider. PSA president, Rae Smith will lead stdents on an exploration of the air arond s. A one day workshop might not be enogh, bt it s a good beginning! Light on Black! Exploring with Christine Ivers, PSA October 28, 2012 Alla Prima Pastel with Bill Creevy, PSA Master November 4, 2012 Captre the excitement of NYC at night in pastel and water media. Enhance reflections and attribtes of night light by sing vivid nderpainting with pastel overlay. Working from photographs, stdents will learn how color, vale and perspective are important in captring the character of the city in vibrant pastel. An instrctor at the PSA School for Pastels, Cook s pastels are in nmeros collections. The Winter Landscape in Pastel with Liz Haywood-Sllivan, PSA Janary 18-20, 2013 & Hall of Fame 2011 October 21, 2012 In this hands-on workshop, stdents will learn the fndamental skills, materials and techniqes for completing a finished pastel in jst one short sitting. Paint stnning landscapes and experience the magic of painting on black textred Gator board. Enjoy the immediacy of brilliant color when pre pigment is applied to the ltimate of dark vales. Achieve impressive reslts while working on Ivers handmade boards available for prchase for a nominal fee at the workshop. Bring yor own photo or work from some that will be available. All levels welcome. Please contact the PSA office in advance of the workshop date for yor spply list: Stdy the color of snow, the effects of shorter days, and how to paint bare branches against the sky, etc. Participants will paint on black paper and nderpaint on sandpaper, exploring winter in its intricacies, and how it relates to pastel painting. Demonstrations and grop critiqe daily, along with individalized instrction at yor easel. All levels welcome devoted to sing photos as compositional tools, color inspiration, memory aids and detail reference. Class exercises will show how to change a photograph of any sbject to make an image that is niqely yor own. & Places: A Painterly Approach tofaces Portraits & Landscapes with Alain Picard, PSA March 9-10, 2013 Day one, Alain demonstrates a painterly approach to the portrait, massing shapes loosely and modeling toward the finish. Day two, Alain demonstrates a painterly approach to the landscape, revealing how the massing in shapes is applied to varied sbject matter. The Portrait Painting with Ellen Eagle, PSA April 28, 2013 A Coloristic Approach to Landscape & Cityscape Painting with Frank Federico, PSA Master & Hall of Fame 2012 May 24-26, 2013 Painting is first energy and then techniqe, is the philosophy of instrctor Federico whose method is a niqe and exciting way to achieve a painterly pastel Move past copying a scene to interpreting it. Stdents will work on several small exercises that address selecting a color palette, developing a strong composition and simplifying bsy sbject matter in order to create a mood rather than jst a well rendered pictre. Barbara will give plenty of demonstrations and provide lots of help at the easel. Painting an Expressive Portrait with Wende Caporale, PSA Master March 23, 2013 Painting from live models, stdents will be gided throgh the process of creating a portrait with an emphasis on drawing, composition, vales and color. Simltaneosly they will be encoraged to proceed in a fashion that enables them to nderstand what to think abot as they observe the effect of light on form. movement of water is captred by seeing the entire myriad of colors on and below the srface, and by commnicating an nderstanding of light s reflection and refraction. This work shop is aimed at helping one see more than yo have before when painting water. Step-by-Step Portraits with Cécile Hoel, PSA April 20-21, 2013 Participants will learn pastel portraitre sing a for-step method: 1) light charcoal sketch in three vales; 2) advanced sketch in one color in three vales (nder layer); 3) fll color, creativity; 4) mystery of the eyes and the backgrond. Day one stdents will work from a photo to learn notions and rles of portraitre; day two stdents will work from a life model to achieve a beatifl painting. As stdents work from the model, Ellen helps her stdents engage in intense color analysis of the sbtle gradations of flesh tones and translate the complexities of tone and form into a beatiflly harmonios constrction. Digital images of the instrctor s works in progress will illstrate the development of her perceptions from start to completion of her portraits and still life paintings. Ellen s book, Pastel Painting Atelier, will be pblished by Watson-Gptill on April 23, Pan Pastels Everything bt the Kitchen Sink with Mindy Lighthipe May 18-19, 2013 PanPastel Colors are professional grade soft pastel colors packed in a niqe pan format (cake-like) that can be mixed and applied like paint. Available in 80 vibrant colors, they are very low dst for a cleaner working environment. Learn to combine PanPastels with other medims like watercolor, goache and colored pencil. The workshop covers creating backgronds, textres and details. A list of materials will be sent pon registration.
