1 PASTEL WORKSHOPS & CLASSES PASTEL SOCIETY OF AMERICA CELEBRATING OUR FORTY-SIXTH YEAR SEPTEMBER 2018 NOVEMBER 2019 The Pastel Society of America annonces 10 new workshops and five on-going classes by nationally acclaimed pastel artists. All instrction takes place in the historic National Arts Clb of New York with the exception of Destination Workshops. Pastel Society of america

2 The Pastel Society of America (PSA), established by Flora B. Giffni in 1972, is the oldest pastel society of its kind in America. Located in the Gramercy Park neighborhood of New York City, PSA s home is in the National Arts Clb (NAC), a glorios historic Victorian bilding, once the residence of New York s Governor Samel Tilden. PSA is largely responsible for the crrent renaissance of pastels in American art and for spporting and directly aiding the creation of other pastel societies in the United States. Thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Giffni, the Flora B. Giffni Gallery of American Pastels was established in 2004 at the Btler Institte of American Art in Yongstown, Ohio, the only msem gallery in the United States devoted exclsively to the pastel medim. In 1989, PSA opened the doors of the School for Pastels to stdents wishing to learn the versatile techniqes of the pastel medim. Hndreds of artists have learned the myriad methods of pastel painting and drawing since PSA s school opened. The Annal Exhibition: Endring Brilliance, in the Grand Gallery of the National Arts Clb, is the premier event for pastel artists in this contry and abroad. PSA encorages artistic advancement by making prestigios awards, both monetary and material, available dring this exhibition. 3 THE PASTEL SOCIETY OF AMERICA OFFERS WORKSHOPS The Pastel Society of America offers workshops instrcted by worldrenowned, award-winning professional artists. Or workshops are designed to encorage stdents to learn, experiment, leave their comfort zones, and tilize the wealth of inspiration fond in New York City, which is fll of creative resorces and possibilities. Artists at all levels are welcomed to join or pastel commnity to experiment, discover, hone skills, and share in artistic exchange and comradery. Intimate workshops are offered year-rond in varios genres, styles, and techniqes. Workshops are small, with a maximm of 12 to14 stdents, enabling instrctors to give plenty of one-on-one attention to each participant. PSA offers stdio workshops at the National Arts Clb, New York City en plein air, as well as drawing from professional models emphasizing the basics of drawing, composition, and color theory. PSA provides yo with an opportnity to take yor art to the next level. We are also seeking a monitor for each workshop. Workshop monitors receive 50 percent off tition.** A monitor is a responsible person who assists the instrctor and other stdents with set p and break down. The monitor will act as class facilitator and keep the stdio clean and orderly. THE PROSAIC LANDSCAPE MADE POETIC with Richard McKinley PSA-MP, HFH September 24-26, 2018 (stdio) Richard will show stdents how to take something mndane and make it sblime by orchestrating the elements of design. He notes that it is always fn when an observer looks at his reference material, whether he is painting on location or in the stdio, and comments abot how boring it appears bt how the painting allows them to see it as beatifl. UNITY & FORM with Casey Klahn PSA October 13-14, 2018 (Self-gided tor at the Metropolitan Msem of Art & stdio) This is not a how-to workshop. The emphasis of this two-day workshop, rather, is on yor own process and personal style, bt with informed and increased knowledge of that always ephemeral element: color, now with Casey s additional focs on Page 3

4 This one day workshop will help the stdent take the fear ot of his artistic process. Starting with yor own failed painting, yo will explore the world of opportnities opened p to yo when yo are not afraid to mess it p. Gronded in both Classic and Modernist traditions, the point is to contine yor conversation with visal art and be present in the here and now. Carol will demo a grisaille with a fondation in traditional classical realist techniqes. The emphasis is on observational drawing from life, which can be applied to any medim, bt then Carol will contine with specifics on pastel painting. The first day will start with a short lectre before a demo ntil lnch. A critiqe will end the day. The second day will start right off with the model and end with a final critiqe. This is a combination of Sally's signatre workshop, The Color of Light, along with her Paint-With-Me and Mentoring Workshop. This workshop will explore how to place architectre in a natral setting, draping tree shadows over a bilding, and how to se cropping and composition to create interesting paintings that inclde both natre and bildings. 7 PUSHING THE CREATIVE LIMITS OF PASTEL with Richard McKinley PSA-MP, HFH September 23-25, 2019 (stdio) As a fine art medim, pastel has few limitations. Throgh daily demonstrations, individal attention, and classroom discssions, Richard will show how varios techniqes can expand pastels potential for personal expression. Nmeros wet and dry procedres, as well as srface choices, will be applied to landscape/cityscape reference materials. 8 FINDING THE SOUL OF THE LANDSCAPE with Lyn Asselta PSA-MP October 25-27, 2019 (stdio) CAPTURED, REFERENCES RE-IMAGINED with Bethany Fields PSA November 8-10, 2019 (stdio) Let s face it, as artists, sometimes we jst plein can t paint! Falling back on photo references is sometimes a necessity when weather, location, or physical limitations get in the way of or idyllic plein air dreams. So how do we create evocative, glorios paintings when or photographs lack lster, depth, and emotion? In this three-day workshop, stdents The relationship between natre and the artist is as old as time. Viewing natre as the inspiration for novelists, poets, composers, and painters, we will explore the why s of painting an expressive landscape and will work with ways to delve deeper into the sol of or landscape paintings. When we know why we paint and how or own sol connects to the process, we are able to create more intitive, emotional paintings, and the qestions of composition, format, and color become easier to answer. 10 THE PASTEL SOCIETY OF AMERICA OFFERS CLASSES Pastel Society of America offers on-going, yearrond classes in landscape, still life, and portraitre and figre at the PSA School for Pastels in or stdio at the National Arts Clb (NAC) in New York City. Classes are small a maximm of 12 stdents enabling instrctors to develop a oneon-one rapport with each participant. The hands-on classes are taght by professional artists and personalized for each stdent wherever they are in their artistic practice. The crriclm of each class emphasizes the basics of drawing, composition, and color theory and an open aesthetic exchange among stdents. Stdents have the opportnity to exhibit their selected work annally in the Trask Gallery at the NAC. A professional artist serves as awards jror. Scholarships are given as an honor of achievement. PSA School offers stdents enrolled in a sixweek session the option of sing the stdio dring office hors, when the stdio is otherwise nreserved. 16 WRITTEN CRITIQUE SERVICES The Pastel Society of America s expanded critiqe services better serves the needs of member and non-member artists. We have for PSA-Master Pastelists with expertise in different genres, one of which may be particlarly relevant to the artist, available to conslt. Critiqe Services is now open to nonmembers as well as members $65 for non-members, $50 for members. Artists will receive a 350 word or more evalation of their paintings, focsing on drawing, color, vale, techniqe, and composition, all aimed at expanding artistic options and prodcing paintings of high competitive qality. Artists interested in this service may send a CD or flash-drive with three infocs jpg images to the PSA office. Each image shold be photographed or scanned withot frames or matting as a 72 dpi, 1200 pixels or more on the longest side file.
