Her style has become immediately recognizable because of her talent for combining vivid colors with intricate piecework. Her geometric star quilts and pictorial quilts have won awards at shows throughout the U.S. and have been featured in publications worldwide. Students love her ability to make these designs achievable even for novice quilt designers. For Gail, quilting began as a whim, when friends convinced her to take a hand-quilting class. Quiltmaking quickly became a passion. Gail s early quilts are traditional with conservative fabric choices. By 1984, she began exploring original design. Today, Gail lectures and conducts workshops to quilters throughout the U.S. and abroad. Her classes for novices include instruction in color and composition, introduction to paper piecing, and drafting, drawing and design. For the experienced quilter, Gail s classes in design are popular wherever she travels. She also leads tours for quilters and birdwatchers to exciting off-the-beaten-path locations. In her other life, Gail is the Executive Director for Hawks Aloft, a New Mexico conservation organization. This organization was founded by Gail and others in February They conduct education and research programs to monitor and protect raptors and other Neotropical migratory birds. During her non-quilting time, Gail may be found working with schools and various interest groups in the community, promoting raptor and conservation awareness, flying in a small aircraft locating nests of large raptors and eagles, or conducting surveys on foot in remote, back-country areas of New Mexico. Several nonreleasable, permanently injured education raptors are housed in outdoor flight cages at her Albuquerque home. 2 2 Ogallala Quilt Festival 2015 Show Judge Susan Whately Small Quilt Live Auction and Small Quilt Silent Auction Don t forget to make a small quilt donation to the Auctions! The Auction Committee will determine whether to include your donation in either the Live Auction at the Friday night dinner, or the Silent Auction on Friday and Saturday at the Expo Building during the Festival. Be sure to label your quilts with the word Auction when dropping off or mailing. As a judge, she recognizes that each quilt represents someone s hard work and dedication whether a first quilt or a professional quilter s masterpiece and deserves to be judged with an open mind. She strives to make constructive comments on every quilt that will encourage the quilter in her/his future endeavors. Her personal preferences are set aside when judging quilts. As an NQA Certified Quilt Judge, she conducts herself in a professional manner in her interactions with the quilting world. Susan has been a quilt maker since 1985 and has been judging quilts since She became a National Quilting Association (NQA) Certified Judge in She has judged quilt shows in a number of states and in 2011 served as one of three judges for the annual NQA Quilt Show in Columbus, OH. In addition to her membership in NQA, she is currently a member of the Crystal Coast Quilting Guild, the Bay Area Quilters Guild, the American Quilting Society, and the International Quilting Association. 3 3 Featured Guild Desert Sky Quilters Guild, Alpine, TX The Desert Sky Quilt Guild was formed in The purpose of the group is to promote the craft of quilting through the education of new quilters and the continuing education of those already involved in the craft. Through the years, the guild realized that there was a great need in the Big Bend area for care quilts. Since then they have contributed over 700 quilts. Quilts have gone to Relay for Life, cancer patients, hug quilts for those who have lost a loved one, Quilts of Valor for Veterans and their families, to victims of the Fort Davis fire, to victims of the West, Texas explosion and nursery quilts for the Alpine Community Center. They have also provided quilted placemats for Meals on Wheels, and have made quilts, Christmas stockings and pillow cases for the Family Crisis Center. The guild meets the first Saturday (regular meeting) and third Saturday (care quilt day) of every month at 10:00 AM. See this exhibit at the Methodist Church. Trunk Show Brownie Kendrick In 1999, while living in Perryton, TX, a dear friend begged me to go with her to Jo s Quilt Shop in Spearman, TX and take a quilt class. She enticed me by saying the owners were going to cut out the fabric for anyone taking the class. She didn t mention it was a Pam Bono pattern with 2,000 pieces. I had never sewn much, but agreed to go. Needless to say, it was a long day for me AND the instructor. But I went home and cleaned up my craft room and started sewing blocks together. I was surprised how much I loved it! My real love turned out to be appliqué. The second quilt I made was a Sun Bonnet Sue Through the Years. After that quilt, I was hooked! My friends in Perryton encouraged me to enter it in the Liberal, KS Quilt Show where it won Viewer s Choice. I was on cloud nine! What a confidence booster. I came to Amarillo quite often and took classes and was influenced by Emily Nipp who worked at R&R Quilt Shop at the time. In 2003 we moved to Amarillo and I had to leave my friends in Perryton that had taught me so much through the guild there. I have entered several quilts shows in the area and enjoy doing that. My husband loves to come in to my sewing room and count my ribbons. The Hoffman Challenge In 1987, the Hoffman Challenge started with 94 enthusiastic quilters. The numbers of entries have grown to more than 700. While the majority of the entries come from the United States, a wide variety of international entries is received. Each year, the top entries are grouped into traveling collections that travel in the US and Canada. The Hoffman Challenge has grown to be a premiere traveling quilt collection. Come visit this outstanding display of quilts from around the world at the Methodist Church. Raffle Quilt Designed by Yvonna Hays, this quilt was made by members of OQS. Quilting by Darlene Collins Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Tickets can be purchased now and during the Festival. Contact us through the website if you would like to purchase tickets now. 6 6 Ogallala Quilt Festival Ogallala Quilt Festival Featured Teacher Jane Sassaman Author of The Quilted Garden After a varied career in the design world, Jane began to quilt in She found that these soft paintings satisfied the draftsman, the craftsman and the artist in her. Consequently, she is now a dedicated (some say obsessed ) quilt artist and fabric designer. Her art quilts have been shown in many national and international exhibits, including Quilt National 1989 through 2005 and Contemporary American Quilts, the first major exhibit of American art quilts in England. Her quilt Willow was named as One of the One Hundred Best American Quilts of the Century. Jane is also the author of The Quilted Garden. The book includes twenty years of her work and exercises for making nature-inspired quilts. Jane s love for historic decorative arts can be seen in all facets of her work, but it is especially evident in the exuberant fabric she is currently designing for FreeSpirit. Her designs are oversized and colorful and have been coined as William Morris on anti-depressants. They are created for quilts, wearables and home decorating. Her latest book, Patchwork Sassaman Style, beautifully illustrates her fabric in action.
