C O M 2013 Featured Quilter ~ Laura Hyatt Laura Hyatt grew up in a farmingranching community near Amarillo, Texas, and was introduced to quilting at an early age. She made a few attempts at quilting as a child but didn t finish a quilt until after her children were born. Then, she made most of their clothes and used the scraps to make quilts for them. Laura used templates made from cardboard cereal boxes, drew around them on fabric, and cut pieces out with scissors. When she retired in 1986, she took her first quilt class and learned how much she didn t know about quilting. Laura s first class was a feathered star, and she had no idea how to put the pieces together, but she went home after that first class with a rotary cutter, rulers, and cutting mat. She joined a quilt group and learned to applique, which quickly became her passion. She has made many miniature grandmother s flower garden quilts with silk ribbon embroidery. Laura has had two quilts accepted in the Paducah Quilt Show, and though neither won a ribbon, she was thrilled to have them accepted. Laura has taught classes in Tucson, Arizona; Lovington and Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Dimmitt, Texas. She doesn t teach much any more but still does lots of quilting. Along with making quilts for family and friends, she makes quilts for community service of the Northern New Mexico Quilters Guild. Laura lives south of Santa Fe with her husband, Tommy. 2 PAGE 2 Our lives are like quilts bits and pieces, joy and sorrow, stitched with love. Awards Presentation & Dinner Thursday, October 17 This year s festival will include the annual Awards Presentation and Dinner on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. at the restored historic Yam Theatre in Downtown Portales. Awards will be given in 11 categories, for first, second and third places as well as honorable mention. Also included this year will be Merchants Awards and four Roadrunner Awards (Best Hand Quilting, Best Machine Quilting, Best Use of Color, and Best Design) sponsored Judges ~ Lucrecia Black & Jean Gilles Dean Lucrecia Black was raised on a ranch in West Texas, then left to attend Texas Christian University, which prepared her for Black teaching and coaching. She has been sewing since she was young and concentrated on fashion sewing for many years. Twenty years ago she began to quilt. Always wanting to learn more, Lucrecia has traveled and cruised many places to take classes from major teachers. Long-arm quilting for the public kept her busy until she decided to just quilt for herself and concentrate on her classes. She teaches beginning machine by area merchants. The festival s major sponsor, First Financial Credit Union, will present the Sponsor s Award for the quilt of their choice. The evening includes a trunk show by featured quilter Laura Hyatt. We will also be honoring local quilter Laura Merrick. A full buffet dinner catered by Sodexo will be provided. Attendees must pre-register by Oct. 2. Date: Thursday Oct. 17 Honored Quilter ~ Laura Merrick Laura Wright was born on St. Patrick s Day 1923 in Loop, Texas. Quilting began for her as a tradition inspired by necessity in a family of 13 children and quickly turned into a passion. At age 17, just before she married Clifford Merrick, she completed her first quilt from start to finish entirely by hand with a little guidance from her mother. And now 4 children, 9 grandchildren, 16 greatgrandchildren, and 5 greatgreat-grandchildren later, she still loves the art. Laura has proudly created at least one treasure for each member of her ever-growing family. What sets Laura apart from many other quilters is her insistence on painstakingly quilting, advanced embroidery machine quilts, and needle-turn applique with lots of specific quilt classes in between. She has judged many regional shows and is in charge of the scribes at Ogallala Quilt Festival, as well as serving as an Ogalla Quilters Society board member and a member of Midland Quilters Guild. Dean Jean Gilles Dean, award-winning quilt maker and photographer, was born in Texas, but grew up in New Mexico, actually started school at Ranchvale and then at Floyd, Portales, and Lovington. She has two degrees Cost: $15 Includes dinner Where: Yam Theatre 219 S. Main Time: 6 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Visit to register online or call quilting each by hand. She appreciates the imperfection of hand stitching and believes it lends a softer feel. Her favorite pattern to admire is the double wedding ring, although her favorite to create is still an oldfashioned scrap quilt. It brings her great joy to take small pieces of scrap fabric ready for the trash and create something beautiful, intricate, and unique. from ENMU. She spent 30 years teaching a variety of subjects at levels ranging from fourth grade to college. Now she teaches quilting skills to adults in west Texas and eastern New Mexico. She is a past president of Midland Quilters Guild, former Quilt Show chairman and currently vice president. Jean served nine years as president of Ogallala Quilters Society and has been on the board since the founding of the organization. Working with judges and scribes and doing the actual judging has enabled Jean to use what she has learned from taking classes from the best quilters in the world and from 18 years of teaching quilting.
