At the time of this newsletter we will have passed the 4 month mark. Wow! Is that all it is! There have been so many changes it seems we have been here forever! If you come into the shop you will see the MANY changes. Our fabric has a whole new personality. Our shelves are full of new items. If you look slowly at the shelves you will see all that we have added. We are breathing new life into Top Shelf Quilts, with many things to see and do. We are trying new fabric flavors for your creations and classes to go with them. Many of you are as excited as we are about the shop and that keeps us wanting to bring you more. We will continue to try new things and constantly change. Nothing in life stays the same. Everything changes and we hope to continuously evolve too. I get so inspired when I come to the shop. I get to see and talk to you about what you are creating and it breathes new life into me. Recently I was asked "What is your vision for the shop?" I am still working on Frankfort Fest Activities are Coming... topshelfquilts@yahoo.com that. But I can tell you with all that is to come, I am evolving as well. So keep making suggestions. Keep inspiring us to grow and change. We love our little shop and want it to stay and breathe life into our quilting community. Come in and be inspired at the NEW TOP SHELF QUILTS! Frankfort Fest activities this year fall between August 29th and September 2nd. Top Shelf Quilts will close at 2:00 PM on the 29th, but will be open all day each of the other four days. However, there will be NO parking at the shop for the duration of the Fest. 1

2 We Have Our Wool Corner... The Iron Quilter The wool has arrived! We have dedicated a corner in the front of the store to wool. There is everything from 5 pieces to bolts of fabric in that corner. Paula has always loved working with wool and she has made several beautiful wool quilts including the one hanging in the shop. Stop in the store to check out our wool inventory and keep your eyes open for wool classes including wool pincushions, a pumpkin and maybe even a wool Block of the Month. The is a day where you can challenge yourself and go beyond your dreams. You will be given a list of items to bring. A theme will be announced at the start of the day and you will have 4 hours to make a small quilt from start to finish. Work alone or with a team! Come with an appetite for something new, as well as adding a secret ingredient to your creation. This is the quilt version of The Iron Chef on TV. See page 8 or contact the shop for more information. The Library at the New Top Shelf Quilts Top Shelf Quilts now has a Library of 230+ quilt books located in the back of the classroom. Books are ready to be checked out for a period of two weeks and renewed if needed. Come in, sit down and spend some time browsing through our present collection containing quilting, appliqué and craft titles. We are hoping to continue to expand our collection and will gladly accept donations of any quilt, appliqué or embroidery books you want to cull from your personal collection. Block of the Month Opportunities Keep your eyes open for new Block of the Month opportunities beginning in the fall and winter months. Look for the Saturday Soirée BOM to begin in September. Participants will complete two blocks a month for six months and meet monthly for tips and help. just after the first of the year will be the Civil War BOM, Freedom Rings. Participants will meet monthly for assistance and a presentation on Civil War/slavery quilts and blocks. We are planning a Civil War Day in early November to kick it off. 2

3 Top Shelf Quilts Sewing Retreats... Fall retreats this year will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn located at LaGrange Road in Tinley Park, IL. The Hilton Inn offers high quality guest rooms, a large spacious conference room for the retreats, a pool and hot tub for your relaxation, and many other amenities for your comfort. Food will not be provided as part of the retreat costs. The Hilton has a restaurant that is open for breakfast and dinner and the surrounding communities offer a varied array of food options from fast and inexpensive to top scale restaurants. By removing food from our costs we are able to reduce our price to you. For those who won t have a vehicle available, the Hilton offers a shuttle service to any of the surrounding restaurants within 10 miles of the hotel. For reference Top Shelf Quilts and Orland Mall are both 4.5 miles from the hotel. This service is also helpful for those customers who wish to relax with a few drinks over dinner but don t want to drive afterward. This fall you will have the option of staying at the hotel and enjoying the full retreat experience or coming for three days of sewing and avoiding the room costs by going home at night. Based on conference room capacity we may also be able to offer one day sewing experiences. While change can be difficult, we think this change is very, very good. The one thing that remains unchanged is the fun you experience by being with friends while doing the thing you love most, Quilting! Many retreaters signed a piece of paper at the March retreat indicating their interest in attending one of the fall retreats. In the change of ownership of the shop those papers were not transferred. If you are thinking that you signed up in the spring, you are not on our current lists. While space for both retreats is still available, please call and talk with one of the ladies in the store and they can give you all the details and get you on the appropriate list. This is an informal group of quilters who love to appliqué quilts and want to share this technique. It is not a formal class, and there is no fee to attend one meeting. However, you must join The Appliqué Society in order to attend additional meetings. 4

Sunday, August 11 and 25, 2013, 12:30-3:30 Cost: $50.00 Project Linus of Will County Project Linus is a non-profit organization that provides hand-made blankets to children in need. Top Shelf Quilts is a Project Linus drop-off site and donations of hand-made blankets are welcome at any time. Patchwork Quilting: Simple Sampler w/chris Always wanted to learn to quilt? How about starting with a simple 9 or 12 block sampler? Come and learn the basics of machine piecing, quilting lingo, and basic machine quilting to make a wall quilt or quilted throwsize patchwork sampler. Lots of basic information will be discussed in class and you will have homework! Be sure your sewing machine is in working order. Come and join the fun. After this 5 session workshop you will have the skills to complete any patchwork quilt you have been dreaming about making! 6 September Happenings Saturday Soirée Block-of-the-Month w/laura Join us for Saturday Soiree, a beautiful collection of red fabrics from Marcus. Twelve different stars and easy setting blocks will be offered for purchase each month to make up this stunning quilt that will surely be an heirloom. Sashing choices will be offered. We will meet the first Saturday of each month for 6 months to go over tips and tricks for each block. There will be 2 blocks offered each month to complete the project in 6 months. This is not a formal class and there is no class fee. Learn everything you need to know to become an appliqué artist. This simple flowing design will show you how to make bias stems, gentle curves and sharp points. Placement techniques, fabric selection, tools and tips and much more will be covered. Twisted Triangles Table Runner w/ Barb With this easy to use tool/template we will add a twist to traditional triangular quilting designs (half-square and quarter-square triangles) and create simple, yet striking table runners containing either double pinwheels, diamonds or chevrons. This is a foundation pieced flying geese pattern based on the pineapple quilt. The quilt has been adapted from a 1875 quilt and is one of the first Edyta Sitar quilts.
