Our Program schedule for the rest of this year looks like fun and informative. This month the last half of the meeting will be dedicated to signing up to help at our Gardens of Quilts event on July 15th. Some of the hostess homes have mini groups or service groups in line, but we realize that not everyone is involved in groups so please come prepared to sign up and help. We will be sharing some ideas for Block of the Month, New ideas for our February Quilto Fun Night, Sign up for a class in March with Terry Vick from Missoula called Applique with Attitude, and Quilt University in April. 2 Heritage Tidbit Many quilters mistakenly believe that Turkey Red refers to a particular color, or any deep red, for the matter. But Turkey red isn t just red, or a particular red, or even a dye you could buy in a packet at the general store. It s actually a dye process that produces a rich and incredibly colorfast bluish red. And while Turkey may suggest that s the place from which western Europeans first acquired the technique, it was actually brought to Europe by Jewish and Syrian dyers from the Levant; Turkey was simply the catch-all phrase for what we now refer to as the Middle East. Although textile printers used madder root for other colors (from vivid orange to brownish-black), producing Turkey red with it was so complicated that they didn t attempt it themselves. Instead, they sent their fabric to Turkey red specialist to be dyed, The Society of Dyers and Colorists website describes the process as one which involved thoroughly cleaning the yarn or cloth by boiling with alkali; steeping in rancid olive or castor oil, soda and cow or sheep dung, mordanting with alum and sumac; dyeing in a batch of madder, ox blood and chalk; finally, washing to brighten the color. In the early nineteenth century the process could take three weeks of more. The use of oil caused Turkey red fabric to be described by vendors as oil boiled. Quilters loved it. Turkey red was a luscious color, it didn t fade, and it didn t bleed, without it the elaborate red-green applique quilts of the period would have been an impossibility. BENT NEEDLERS: Meets on Thursday each month at a member s home. Barbara Bayer, HERITAGE GROUP: Dedicated to sharing knowledge and excitement in our quilt heritage. Meets 3rd Thursday, 10am Sept June in member s home. Judi Rizzo, SCRAPPY QUILTERS: Ideas on how to use your scraps to make quilts! Carol Steigerwalt, or Joyce Hooper, SERVICE GROUPS QUILTS 4 KIDS: Our goal is to give local children in trauma or need a hug comfort with a quilt. One or all are always welcome. You can come and sew with the group or they will supply kits to take home or supplies for making your own kits/quilts. Meets 2nd Friday from 10am to 4pm at the Westview Center/Bitterroot College (corner of S. 9th and W. Main St). Ellen Kiedaisch or Nicki Goss, COMFORTERS: The Comforters group is a small group of quilters who meet monthly at the Bitterroot College and make quilts for hospice patients. We generally meet on the first Friday of the month from 10 am to 2 pm. All you have to do is show up and we ll show you what to do. Please join us. We welcome all quilters beginners to advanced. It s a great way to make friendships, do what you love and pass on that love to people who are comforted by your generosity.
