April Birthdays: Happy Birthday to Diane Basque, Sarah Davis Diana Fitzwater, Pat Joho, Sheila Leverton and Judy Saak. Members Highlights: Sandy Foreman What's there to say about me? I live in the Village of Pinellas, had our house built to our specifications and moved in August 15, I've always loved to sew but did so by hand and I always wanted to learn how to quilt. So, figuring The Villages does everything, I looked into a guild. After I found Big Cypress I went to Joanne Fabrics and took a class and caught "the bug". My first quilt was huge (extended king, plus) and now I'm making quilts for my dogs, grandkids and venturing out to make my first T-shirt/picture quilt. I wish I could make every meeting but as most know, I work at Publix, bakery, decorator and can't predict my Tuesday schedule. That s me in a nutshell. 12 P a g e
Reminders: Please, if you wish to work on committee, remember to contact Flo Knorr at or Dottie Myers at or Kathleen Grahms at with any ideas, suggestions or class offering. We need for all do their parts. Please contact Judy Saak at or to report your charities. Reminders: Please note that any items to be added to the newsletter must be approved by Flo Knorr or Kathy Grahms. Cook Books: Cooking in Paradise are available through Flo. Also, they will be selling them at the Market Nights at the various Town Squares. Since the beginning of October, we've sold an additional 150 cookbooks bringing the total sold to 713! We still have over 400 cookbooks remaining to sell. We'll be selling the cookbooks the following dates at the Town Square Market nights and farmers market. Please share this information with your chapter and family and friends. In addition, we've received $ in donations for Shepherds Lighthouse. With the snowbirds returning and the holidays around the corner, we expect sales to pick up. If you are looking for the perfect holiday or hostess gift, consider the cookbook. As always you may contact any of the cookbook committee members for additional books and we'll be sure to get the books to you very timely. Tips and Notes: Your Stash: The most important tool for quilting is your fabric collection. Build a good stash and then you'll always be able to find that special piece you need to complete a project. 13 P a g e
AmysCreativeSide.com by Amy Ellis Tid Bits from Blog Trimming: Trimming is one of the less glamorous parts of quilting, but I do find that it is a necessary step when I m piecing most of my quilts. I have a small basket on my cutting table for scraps and trash, the slivers of fabric that are too small to use in any piecing. I find my favorite ruler for the job, and mark the reference points if I m doing a lot of trimming. Turn on some Netflix, and get it done. Units: For precision s sake, I find making my Half-Square Triangle (HST) units slightly larger than needed and trimming to size a great use of my time. Trimming these units down makes the later steps in the quilt block or top much easier, no matter how straight my stitching I still seam to have a little variation in the outcome. The same is true of any unit that is slightly larger than needed. I have a step by step look at how I trim my HST units here - if nothing else pin this one for later! Blocks: Trimming my blocks before putting them into a quilt top has saved me lots of frustration. When possible, I like to have a ruler the same size as the quilt block. Currently I have 6 1/2, 9 1/2, 12 1/2 and 16 1/2 square rulers, some I use a lot more than others, but they have all come in handy! Having the square ruler, to trim my square blocks, helps to make sure they are indeed square, as I trim them. If necessary, press your blocks with a little starch so that they are nice and flat before trimming. Having nice square blocks means less struggles to match up seams, and a nice square quilt top! It's all the little things in quilting that add up to a pleasant experience, and you being less critical of 14 P a g e
Block of the Month - Modern: Debbie will be doing the Hopscotch block of on pages 14 & 15. Debbie recommends you bring to class scrap material to learn to cut and sew the block. Also, be sure to write your name on your Hex N More ruler, Sidekick ruler and pattern booklet. Runner of the Month Linda Mallue, Jeannie and I have had the idea of replacing the Traditional Block of the Month with a Runner of the Month. However, we need volunteers to sign up to demonstrate a runner technique of pattern. We will pass a sign up sheet around for volunteers. Help us out to get this idea going. Mystery Quilt 2016 Nancy will have more clues available on April 12th. It is not too late to join the fun. She will also have Purchasing and Cutting instructions as well as previous clues are available as well for those who missed them. Happy Quilting JOIN THE FUN AND SOLVE THE MYSTERY 15 P a g e
Improvisational Quilting Having Fun with Piecing By Sherri McConnell Improvisational piecing is a fun creative quilting method that can best be described as "piecing without rules". With this technique, you throw your inhibitions out of the window and use a variety of different fabric scraps, sew them together, and continue adding more in a similar fashion. For example, string blocks, created from a number of unique strings of fabric, incorporate aspects of this style. With no clear pre-planned path, you never quite know what you're going to get with improv piecing-just that you're going on an adventure to create it! To attempt this type of piecing, first gather a bucket of scraps in various sizes. You might have the itch to color-coordinate these before you begin, but try to resist this temptation - you'll be surprised at how liberating sewing without a specific color scheme in mind can be. To begin creating fabric blocks, first choose two random pieces of fabric and sew them right sides together along two edges. Trim the fabric giving it straight edges, and then press it. After that you are ready to add another piece of fabric. Simply reach into your scrap bin and incorporate any piece you touch. Continue adding various fabric scraps, pressing and trimming after each step. You don't need to trim to a certain shape-your work in progress can be square, rectangular, triangular or any shape you desire. Continue until you have a quilt block constructed of a mixture of fabrics, that is just a little bit larger than you need for your finished block. Then, trim to the desired measurements and start on your next block. Using this technique, you can create a quilt of any size. Additionally you can set the blocks together directly or use sashing in between-the choice is up to you. 16 P a g e
Improvisational Quilting Having Fun with Piecing By Sherri McConnell It can be a lot of fun to create a mystery quilt in this manner! I recently made a straight improvisational block as part of an online quilting bee. With this type of block you use the same method for selecting scraps; however, you square up the block with the addition of each new piece of fabric. Honestly, I was surprised at how much fun I had in creating this block. After years of worrying about patterns and rules, it was pleasantly exhilarating to just go with the flow and sew with a variety of fabrics without a particular end goal in mind. I embraced that the final block would just end up how it ended up, and that was a lot of fun! If improvisational quilting piques your interest, you might want to check out Victoria Findlay Wolfe's book15 Minutes of Play: Improvisational Quilts or her blogwith ideas for this fun technique. Have you ever tried improvisational quilting? 17 P a g e
