1 Redlands Sewing Center Class and Club Descriptions Clubs: Embroidery Clubs - Cindy The embroidery clubs for Redlands Sewing Center will continue with a new one added for next season. Basics Embroidery Club is designed to introduce you to threads, needles, stabilizers, and other products to aid you in successful embroidery on a variety of useful fabrics. Monogramming on towels, embroidery on sweatshirts & T-shirts, Stand Alone Laces, and much more If you want to learn a set of building blocks that will give your projects professional results; and are either new to embroidery, or needing to refresh your knowledge and skills, this is the club for you! Techniques Embroidery Club takes you to the next level of embroidery skills, however, you should have already completed your new owner s classes for your machine and at least one year of basics embroidery to graduate to this next level. You will continue to learn additional techniques and no actual projects will need to be completed. You may wish to embroider only on sample fabrics while you learn to apply new techniques, and apply these to your projects at home this is the club for you! Projects Embroidery Club will require both basic skills and a sense of adventure. You will need to be prepared before arriving at the meeting each month, otherwise your project may not be finished in the allotted class time. In this club you will learn Modular Blocks with pockets and zipper closures, Bricolage, Folded Fabric with Thread Painting over printed fabrics, Running Stitch, Blanket Stitch with 3-D flowers, and Crazy Quilting. These techniques will be used to create everything from USB Holders, Quilted Pin Cushion with Thread Catcher, Sewing Machine Cover and/or Organizer Mat, Sewing Caddy, Handle Wraps, Scissor Holders, and much more. Free Motion Quilting Club Candy Designed for both the beginning free motion quilter, and those who have done some free motion quilting, but who need the coaching and encouragement to bolster confidence to get working in this type of setting. You will work on the skills you learn in class, building on each free motion quilting motif presented. By the end of the year, you should have a strong understanding of lots of basic motifs and will have the confidence to actually use free motion on your own quilts! Candy has designed a series of 4 simple projects that can be made with practice quilting sandwiches that you will make during the year, which should encourage you to try out your new skills. Kids/Charter School Sewing Club - Brynn Kids Club will meet once a month, starting in September and ending in May, on either Friday or Saturday of the first full weekend of the month. Kids, ages 8-16 will learn new techniques as they create unique sewing projects. Projects are fast & easy, designed to be completed in the time allotted. Classes begin in September. Software Skill Builders (SSB) Bernina with Kari, Janome with Linda, Brother with Holly SSB is an 8 month long program designed to enhance your understanding and use of your embroidery software. Some topics may vary as we receive updates and learn exciting new things. All skill builder classes require the most current version of digitizing software installed to have been installed in your computer in order to participate in the classes. Older software cannot be supported. 1

2 Serger Club - Mara Join us on a continuous serging adventure from September thru May that will allow you to have fun while you are using and advancing your skills with your serger/overlock machine. Every other month you will be learning a new technique, then the following month you will be applying the technique to a project as we try the different feet. Get that serger out of the closet, dust it off, oil it, and bring it on down for class. Learn and use the skills, or lose them!!! Sewing Techniques Club: Mara From the newest sewing enthusiast to the long time sewing enthusiast, our Sewing Techniques Club will take you on a monthly voyage as you learn and improve your sewing skills. Every other month will be reviewing basic sewing skills as well as advanced skills, then the following month you will apply the technique to a project as we try out different feet. Learn and use the skills, or lose the skills!!! Scan N Cut Club: Michelle Basics: In this club you will learn about all of the things Scan N Cut will do. We will use the tools in your Scan N Cut and concentrate on getting familiar with the settings and use of your machine. We will explore cutting fabric, creating stencils for glass etching, creating designs for heat transfer & craft vinyl to name a few. Advanced: Now that you are comfortable using your machine, we ll think outside the box and use our machine to create fun projects Basic Pattern Design Club: Orchid This club will teach you measuring and understanding your own body. You will take a pattern and alter it to fit. Then create a one of a kind garment fit to your one of a kind body. Learn tips and tricks for the art of sewing with your serger machine and straight stitch during the construction of a garment, as well as different sewing machine techniques for different fabrics and garments. Tailoring Club: Orchid Learn to sew with all the secrets and details of high fashion tailoring. You will learn tailoring procedures, how to recognize textiles for garments, fitting, and various sewing techniques. Working with Knits: Orchid Take advantage of Orchid s extensive knowledge and experience in sewing as she guides you through work with all types of stretchy materials; cotton, fleece, lace and many more. Some garment making knowledge is required to attend this club and you must complete each project from beginning to end in order to advance to the next level. You will use your serger and sewing machine to create a series of projects that will take you from very simple techniques to the most advances. Quilt Academy #1 (Freshman & Sophomore): Carol This is a techniques course in Quilt making. Months 1-4 (freshman) start with techniques such as rotary cutting, squaring up fabrics, strip piecing, ¼ seaming, measuring and sewing borders, backing, binding & more. Months 5-8 (sophomore) is diagonal sets, setting triangles, sashing when & where, and more. Quilt Academy #2 (Junior & Senior): Carol This is a techniques course in Quilt making. Months 1-4 (junior) you will be taught 8 methods of halfsquare triangles, 1/4 square triangles, color theory, flying geese classic and more. Months 5-8 (senior) you will be drafting and sewing octagons, partial seams, diamonds, and more. May Classes: Janome Acufil: May 15 th & 22 nd - Linda Let your fingers do the walking, but let your Janome Embroidery Machine do the quilting for you. Beautiful stippling designs as well as many other quilting designs are now available for these great machines. Learn how to work in the Quilt Calculator, print your templates, use the new cloth guide, and discover features like Appliqué Corner and Back to the Beginning Button, and much more. 2

3 June Classes: Jean & Pant Alterations: June 1 st & 8 th - Orchid Do you have jeans hanging in your closet that never get worn because they don t fit quite right? Learn how to take in that gaping waist, as well as how to hem your jeans while keeping their original hem. Replacing that broken zippers is no long a problem either. The second class will teach you the basics of pant alterations with basic fitting problems. You will learn basic alterations and how to hem pants or shorts, and how to save money on alterations! These techniques will apply to any size of kid s, men s or women s pants. Babylock Evolution/Ovation Event: June 2 nd & 3 rd Mara Learn to do more with your serger than you could ever imagine. This 2-day event will teach you how to do such techniques as elastic button loops, spaghetti straps, French seams, and much more! Now is the time to try the Babylock serger as you make your beautiful purse from the kits provided. Hoopsisters Storm by the Sea: June 6 th & 20 th Judy Storm by the Sea, is a machine embroidered quilt design with lots of possibilities. You see something different in this unique quilt pattern every time you look at it. From diamonds and squares to wavy lines to stars. You can make a crib/wall hanging or king size quilt. Free Motion Quilting: June 6 th, 13 th & 20 th - Candy Loma Linda Stocking Day: June 10 th Staff Santa s elves need your help as we create a new annual tradition of sending newborn babies home to their families in Christmas stockings. This is a community service project for Loma Linda University Medical Center. Computer Fundamentals: June 13 th - Mara So you bought an embroidery machine. Now what? This computer basic class will help you learn to create files, save files, successfully downloading designs from the internet, save or transfer files to a stick (flash drive) and other basic computer skills. You will need to bring your laptop, a USB stick and an embroidery design CD of your choice. Summer Camp for Grown Ups: June 16 th & 17 th Sue Summer means going to the beach, going to Disneyland, or just having fun. Join us as you use KimberBell s Simple 7 for Summer to create our version of summer fun as you make several projects while enjoying the company and conversation. Row -by-row official release - June 21 Months of planning for Redlands Sewing Center s first year to participate in the Row by Row Experience 2017 culminate with the international release of the authorized rows. This year s theme is On The Go! Our special row depicts some of the choice features reflective of the Redlands area. Don t miss out on the opportunity to get our very first Redlands Sewing Center row before they are gone! Doxie Dog: June 26 th - Sue Who doesn t love a Dachshund? Sew your own Sausage Dog and choose to have the tail down or a flirty puppy tail waving in the air. Your choice of fabric makes your Dachshund reflect your personality, so go for it! 3

4 Teen & Tween Sewing Camp: June 26 th, 28 th & 30 th Brynn Don t let your teen be left out of the sewing revolution. Brynn will guide your teen as she learns to sew or expand her current skill level. She will be making a sleep shirt and a "take along" standard size pillowcase with a handle for easy transport to those summer sleepovers. July Classes: Intro to Sewing - Apron: July 6 th, 13 th & 20 th - Brynn This Apron class is your first step to creating your own unique clothing. While creating your own apron, you will learn basic sewing terms as well as how to read a pattern. From this single pattern, you can later make any of the 8 included aprons. Janome Sew With Your Feet: July 10 th & 17 th Linda Explore the large selection of feet available for your Janome sewing machine. You will learn how to pintuck, bead, pipe, ruffle, and apply ribbons and sequins. We will be gathering and applying bias strips to fabric as well as learning to use a circle maker with our decorative stitches. We will have fun using heavy threads in the bobbin for a technique known as bobbin work. Come join us! ABCs of Machine Embroidery: July 11 th Holly In this class you will learn all about the supplies needed to begin machine embroidering. No matter what brand of machine you embroider on, this class is for you! Christmas in July In-House Retreat: July 14 th & 15 th Staff How fast can you sew? We will start will a jelly roll race as you create your fabric to make a Christmas tree skirt and stocking. Price will include your pattern, fabric and food. Join us for fun and prizes. Santa Inc.: July 22 nd - Staff Elves needed for Santa Claus Incorporated, one of San Bernardino County s oldest children s charities. Join us as we make our special Redlands Sewing Center pillowcases to contribute to the thousands of children serviced by this organization. Kids Sewing Camp: July 24 th, 26 th, & 28 th - Brynn sign up to use one of our classroom sewing machines at no additional cost. This week-long camp is three, 3 hour sessions held on Mon/Wed/Fri. Camp attendees will make a pair of pajama bottoms. One of the easiest things to sew is a pair of pajama bottoms! Personalize yours by choosing fabric in your favorite colors, your favorite characters such as Disney, your favorite things such as robots, cats, dogs, flowers, and the list goes on. The possibilities are endless! Kids Quilting Camp: July 24 th, 26 th, 28 th, 31 st, Aug 2 nd & 4 th - Brynn sign up to use one of our classroom sewing machines at no additional cost. This two-week long camp is made up of six, 3 hour sessions held on Mon/Wed/Fri. Camp attendees will be making a Livin Easy quilt using just 12 fat quarters. Quilting is kind of like putting a puzzle together using lots of different fabrics. This quilt is easy to make, but looks like you put a lot of work into it! You ll love making this clever quilt! Kids Sewing Camp: July 31 st, Aug 2 nd & 4 th - Brynn sign up to use one of our classroom sewing machines at no additional cost. This week-long camp is three, 3 hour sessions held on Mon/Wed/Fri. Camp attendees will be making a fish shaped mesh bag. Personalize yours by choosing fabric in your favorite colors. The possibilities are endless! 4

5 August Classes: Free Motion Quilting: Aug 10 th, 17 th & 31 st - Candy Dream Frame Event with Jerry Granata: Aug 12 th - Staff Known as the Quilter Dude, Jerry Granata became an award winning quilter with his very first design in Join Jerry as you explore the unexpected creative opportunities that are available on the Dream Fabric Quilting Frame. Discover the new opportunities in home decor, fashion and accessories as well as construction of quilt components that can double as embellishments on other projects. Baby Layette: Aug 16 th & 23 rd Orchid It s baby time! Do you have a child or grandchild arriving soon? Maybe you have a friend who is expecting a baby. Why not make them their own baby layette, which you can personalize (or not) as you feel inspired. Bernina Bear-Nina Event: Aug 19 th - Staff Join with Redlands Sewing Center and BERNINA of America to become a member of the RARE Bear Army. RARE Science s RARE Bear program is a grassroots community-driven outreach for kids with rare disease. We will spend the day using customer donated fabrics to create one-of-a-kind teddy bears for one-of-a-kind rare kids. We don t even have to stuff them! Convention Rewind Event: Aug 29 th - Staff Our summer months are spent going from one convention to another, from one end of the nation to another as we see the new and upgraded models of machines. The end of August, we finally get to relax! What? I don t think so! Now is the time for us to share these wonderful new creations with you, our customers. Please join us to see all the new, fun, and exciting toys! September Classes: Intro to Paper Piecing: Sept 19 th & 26 th Carol Paper piecing is an easy technique that is ideal for small blocks with intricate angles and points. You will be using a pattern on paper and sewing through it by number to achieve the desired design. This class is using a simple star design to learn the classic technique of paper piecing. Ultimate Travel Bag: Sept 25 th, Oct 30 th, Dec 4 th - Tish This functional bag is the perfect carry-on travel companion, and it is sure to turn heads wherever you go. It has a comfortable padded adjustable and detachable carrying strap and quick-grab side handles for convenience in all sorts of travel. October Classes: Make a Stocking Day Charity for Redlands Hospital: Oct 14 th - Staff Santa s elves need your help to continue the annual tradition of sending newborn babies home to their families in Christmas stockings. This is a community service project for Redlands Community Hospital. Free Motion Quilting: Oct 11 th, 18 th & 25 th - Candy **We have basic sewing, embroidery and sewing know how classes throughout the year.
