1 The Patchwork Pipeline Baytown Area Quilt Guild a 501(c)(7) Organization/Social Club Volume 35, No. 2 February 2019 President s Pen Jane Ott Program Annette Kuder There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure As the month of January comes to a close, I look back on my first meeting as your President and think - Wow, I actually managed to overcome my fear of speaking in public and was pleased by the warm, welcoming comments of BAQG members, which made me feel at ease. And that s the way it should be - being able to address a group with confidence, not being afraid to voice one s opinion and be willing to state one s ideas and suggestions. Even if suggested ideas are not accepted or come to fruition, at least they can be a planted seed that with a little fine tuning can grow into numerous possibilities that will help the guild grow and prosper and create new interest. Hopefully, this year will be one in which you let your creative juices flow. Not only in your quilting endeavors, but in whatever outlet your choose. Be ambitious - try something new, whether it be a new art form, visit a museum, take a class in an unexplored subject or a trip to a destination you ve been dreaming about. Future meetings are planned for board members to brainstorm. In other words, to let our creative juices flow. And we welcome your ideas - you never know where a great, inspiring idea might come from - it might be from YOU. I hope to see all of you at the February meeting! Remember to ask a friend or someone that no longer drives at night. There is still time for quilt show entries to be submitted, make a block for Block challenge and there are many exciting programs planned in the upcoming year. Get involved with your guild - you might enjoy it. Hospitality Kathy Oian Sally Frickey Kay Morgan Karen White Angie Briwn Lois Tandy Jane DeStefano Carolyn Davis I hope you will all join us for the February 4, 2019 meeting and welcome our guest speaker, Carol Morrissey from the Lewisville/Dallas area: She will be sharing her lecture on Confessions of an Absent Minded Quilter along with a trunk show. Below are few things Carol asked us to share about herself. I'm a fifth-generation quilter and I hope to pull my children and grandchildren into the quilt-making vortex. When I joined the Quilters Guild of Dallas, I was afraid I would embarrass myself with my work. My first quilt had 12 huge rectangles. My second quilt had over 700 half-square triangles. I was hooked. I began designing my own quilt patterns from the beginning, and before I knew it, I was teaching! And then I started my own pattern company. A chance meeting with Marianne Fons resulted in my first magazine exposure (she asked me to design a paperpieced jack-o-lantern). My first quilt show ribbon was on a paper-pieced block of my dachshund, Roxanne, RIP. My first "cash" prize was at Katie Pasquini Masopust's Alegre Retreat in Santa Fe a shopping spree from Lunn Fabrics. I was so excited I nearly cried. My most recent quilt-related thrill, which made my head swell just a smidgen: At the 2012 IQA show in Houston, Ricky Tims bought my Texas Horned Lizard, to display with his and Justin's horny toad collection, according to Justin. I can't think of a better home for that quilt. I look forward to hearing Carol and being entertained with her lecture as well as her quilts. Remember to bring in your recipe card (this month for both January and February) we will draw each month for a gift, and the recipes will be collected for a future Cookbook. 7 Volume 35, No. 2 Minutes of the January 2019 General Meeting Page 7 President Jane Ott called our January meeting to order at 7:12 pm, welcoming members and guests. She stated that she is looking forward to the new year and shared that a lot of new ideas have been brought to her attention and that she and the board welcome them all. Former President, Connie Litteer, was called to the front and was presented her President s Quilt for her faithful service the past two years. Carolyn Davis, new Chair of the Hospitality Committee, challenged members to sign up to be a hostess this year. She is planning to draw a name each month for a prize from the hostesses that serve and bring a recipe. At the end of the year, the Guild will compile all the recipes into a cookbook to be sold as a fundraiser. Jane thanked Carolyn for her great idea and for taking on the position of Hospitality Chair. Jane then acknowledged January birthdays - and hers was the only one! Vicki Carroll made a motion to accept the December newsletter minutes. Connie Litteer seconded the motion, and the motion carried. Vicki Carroll then read the Treasurer s report. Connie Litteer made a motion to accept the report as read, and Jeanette Lott seconded the motion. The motion carried. Becky Bradley appealed to members of the Guild to volunteer for the Donation Quilt Travel Committee. She needs help with scheduling locations to show the quilt and sell tickets. The goal we need to reach in ticket sales is $5700. There were no volunteers during the meeting. Janie DeStefano held her mini raffle with great success and fun prizes! Librarian, Renee Wojnowski, showed us several new books donated to the Guild by her friend. One of the books is being donated in memory of Barb Woods precious cat that recently passed away. Please keep Barb in your thoughts. Renee asked if there was any interest in a reading challenge, and Linda McPike was in favor right away! Tracy Williams is in countdown mode with only 5 months to go until the Quilt Show! She encouraged members to participate in the block challenge. All blocks will be displayed and voted on at the show. The top 3 winners will win a prize. Fat quarters for the blocks are being sold at Guild meetings. Tracy said that Lisa Struthers is still taking quilt entries for the show, and entry forms need to be sent to her right away. Thursday, May 2, volunteers are needed to help set up, and there are jobs to be covered through Saturday. Members can choose the time they want to be there and the job that they want to do. Posters and postcards will be available in February for us to take around the community and local quilt shops. Items are needed for raffle baskets (Carolyn Davis) and for the silent auction (Connie Schofield). Gloria Hill spoke about our next workshop which will be a paper piecing project. This will be held on Sunday, March 31 and possibly Monday, April 1. The cost will be based on attendance. Linda McPike will be accepting donations of blank cards for Sunshine and Shadows. Jane Ott read the thank you note from Love Inc for the lovely children s gifts that members donated in December. New member, Grace H volunteered to be the new Mini Raffle Committee Chair! Thank you, Grace! Show and Tell: Renee Wojnowski showed a beautiful quilt called Tiffany s Cowboy s Quilt that she made for her niece, Tiffany, who is a huge Cowboys fan. She also had made an overnight bag and a Judy Neimeyer table runner. New member, Grace H, had a lovely quilt of her own design. Pam Jones had made a 50th anniversary quilt which had pictures of her husband and her from 8th grade to age 70! Jane Clifton brought numerous quilts that Barb Woods made for the Pregnancy Resource Center and several larger quilts for MD Anderson. Barb is down in her back. Please keep her in your prayers. Becky Trigg showed us her quilt top for the new block of the month project. She will have patterns and instructions each month along with fun coloring pages. When you return next month, bring your finished block, and your name will be in a drawing for a prize. In November, bring your completed quilt top, and you will be entered in a drawing for the Grand Prize! The quilt pattern is called Under the Stars and is by Debra Davis of Tuning My Heart Quilts. Becky offers the pattern in 2 colorways. Suzy McLain gave a demonstration of her latest quilting find, Omnigrid s Stripology Ruler. She said that there is a good YouTube video demo of the tool called Stripology 101 that gives good tips on tool usage and holding the rotary cutter. Winner of the ruler and a pattern was Elizabeth Walters. Annette Kuder let us know that February s guest speaker will be Carol Morrissey of ocaroldesigns.com. She will present Confessions of an Absent-Minded Quilter with her trunk show. Annette then introduced our January guests, Debby Walters and Kim Buchmann, a mother-daughter duo, formerly of Quilting Adventures. Together, they have more than thirty years of quilting experience. They talked about the benefits of being in a guild or a bee, showed stacks of gorgeous traditional and art quilts and told us about many of their favorite designers. In attendance were 49 members, 5 new members and 1 guest. Jane Ott adjourned the meeting at 9:09 Amy Collins, Secretary
