1 The Patchwork Pipeline Baytown Area Quilt Guild a 501(c)(7) Organization/Social Club Volume 32, No. 5 May 2016 President s Pen Dear fellow quilters, Lisa Struthers Baytown Area Quilt Guild Presents I remember my first introduction to the idea of quilts being judged. It was in a book by Patricia Beatty, called "O the Red Rose Tree" that I first read in, I would guess, 4th or 5th grade. In it four girls in the second half of the 1800s were collecting 7 shades of red fabric so that the rose quilt that would be made from the fabric would beat another quilt in a judging; I don't remember now if it was a county fair or something similar, but their main goal was to have a quilt that would beat the (mean? uppity? I don't remember) lady who usually won this competition. I do remember that one of the reds they acquired was a petticoat from a lady performer of some sort, and they had several adventures along the way. I read that book several times as a child, but that was a good while ago, and I have forgotten much of it. Did any of you read that book as a child? I do know (spoiler alert!) that the red rose quilt came in second, and the better quality work won, but the girls were satisfied that the best quilt did win, and that their quilt deserved second place. I am looking forward to our quilt show on May 6 and 7. We have many good quilters in our guild, and unlike those fictional girls in the late 1800s, we don't need to use red petticoats in our quilts (unless we want to use them) and we aren't stuck with a few traditional patterns in traditional colors (although many of us like and make that kind of quilt.) We will have a wide variety of sizes, styles, techniques, and colorways displayed, and I hope we will all see something that is familiar as well as something that is totally new, that we will take the opportunity to look at the quilts that are hung in a new light. We don't yet know whose quilt will win, but I do know that as a team we can pull together a winning quilt show, and that each quilt on exhibit will bring something positive to the whole. The quilt show committee has done a lot of good work to get us to this point, and I look forward to working with each of you on the installation and show days to make the Quilt Roundup an educational and stimulating experience for the people who come to see it Quilt Show Quilt Round-Up May 6 & 7, 2016 Friday 10am-5pm & Saturday 10am-4pm Lee College Sports Arena 200 Lee Drive, Baytown, Texas Daily Admission: $8 for adults Free for children 12 years of age & under. Hosted by: Lee College Senior Adult Program Join A Team! Teams are needed to hang quilts for our quilt show on Thursday, May 5. There are several tasks for each team, and some of them are easy, such as holding up the bottom of a quilt so it doesn't drag on the floor, or picking up the next quilt to be hung. If we can have 6 teams of 5 or six people, we will be done hanging in no time. With 3 groups, it will take longer. Help us get this job done quickly so the judges have plenty of time to take a detailed look at our work. If you have stepladder, please bring it - we will need several. Please ask me if you have any questions. Thanks, Lisa Struthers Lisa Struthers
