1 TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT Life in Stitches Newsletter of the Rio Grand Valley Quilt Guild PRESIDENTS THREADS THAT BIND Wow, a lady with so much to share. If you attended our Saturday Guild meeting you had the pleasure of learning a bit about creating your own custom fabrics. The emphasis was on an easy way to create backgrounds, especially skies that could be used in landscape quilting. I wonder how many will incorporate this skill into their landscape or other quilts, If you weren t able to make it, maybe we could encourage our speaker, Jean Waufle to teach a Schoolhouse class to share more of her techniques for personal usage to be incorporated in quilts for our Quilt Show. We are continuously seeking SPEAKERS for our summer programs. Many of you have talents which could be shared. Judy Brown would love to hear from you. We also need more volunteers to help sustain participation in our Guild. We don t want to burn out our present Committee Chairpersons and Officers - therefore it is that time again to elect - 1 st Vice President Membership, 2 nd Vice President- Community Service, and Treasurer. Current Officers are willing to share the duties of their office to ensure the position is Your positive fit. The incoming and outgoing officers will be joined at the hip, so to speak, ensuring a smooth transition into office. Unfortunately the positions of 1 st Vice President Membership and Treasurer have served their 4 year term limit and cannot be nominated. If no candidates come forward for the positions, the current officers can continue as per the exception in the By-Laws. A nominating committee is being formed to present a slate of candidates for these offices at the October 13 th Meeting and Voting will be at the November 10 th Meeting with installation at the January 12, 2019 Guild Meeting. All interested Guild Members in good standing should submit a resume in person or to: President@rgvqg.com. THIS IS YOUR GUILD ASSIST IN IT S GROWTH QUILT SHOW CHAIRPERSON: Would you like to be the 2021 Quilt Show Chairperson? Now is the time to volunteer and walk hand in hand with Debi and Marcia learning all the ins and outs of behind the scenes of a Quilt Show. Think it over seriously or there cannot be a Quilt Show without a chairperson. Several of our members have been affected by the recent floods our thoughts and prayers are with all as they survive this negative impact. So much going on with the guild for the remainder of this year just keep checking the website, The guild is so fortunate to have talented members willing to share their talents with fellow members. Thank you to all who share. REMEMBER September 8 th is Friendship Day and October 13th is Rummage Sale. Time to clear out that ole stash ones stash is another s treasure I am looking forward to our next meeting on August 11 th 9AM - so mark your calendar. We are all bound together by a common thread quilting! See Ya! We have 310 members in the Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild as of 07/14/2018. We will start taking membership dues for 2019 at the October meeting. New members have never belonged to our guild before. Returning members were members in the past, but not the prior year. Renewing members were members in the prior year. The following are the memberships received since the last membership article. Welcome New Members none for July. Welcome back returning members none for July. Welcome back renewing members none for July. I will not publish address or info in the newsletter. Address and info for all members is available online on the alligator page. You will need a password to open the directory. Your 2018 membership ID cards will have the info needed to access the online directory on the back of the ID card. Bonnie M Hall (membership@rgvqg.com) or (call or text) Programs Update To round out the summer, we have Lila Helm presenting on machine embroidery with quilting in August, Friendship in September, and Rummage Sale in October. In November we are excited to welcome Karen K. Stone. Registration is open now with Little Things the Count almost full. Karen is one of the three teachers in Houston offering a progressive class. Her other class in Houston is $96, compared to a day with her at RGVQG for only $45 (and no travel or lodging expenses.) Lets fill both of her classes this month. December we have Carly Mul of WebFabrics coming. Carly has a weekly newsletter which shares so much of fabric industry news. She is the most knowledgable that I have found about the industry as a whole and has agreed to gather samples of new products from the Houston Market for dealers in November and provide them to us for her December meeting lecture. I am sure you will enjoy her and learn so much at the meeting. In further discussions with her, we have decided to change the class from the sewing machine to the scissors as she indicates that more color study is included and it is a more popular class. Here is a photo of a few recent students creating these scissors. What fun for our sewing rooms! If you are going to the Houston Festival, you will see WebFabrics in a large booth approximately in the center of the show floor. 7

8 Programs (continued) In February we have two experts coming Weeks Ringle for our meeting and Cathy Geier (landscape quilts) for the Quilt Show. I am so excited that we were able to bring Weeks to our Guild. She is very popular and a great teacher and lecturer. Check Weeks out at or on Facebook. You will be able to sign up for either of Week's classes in August as well as Cathy s at the Quilt Show. We have changed the classes for March with Judy Gauthier as there was so much interest in her umbrella classes. We will have two umbrella classes and one hexagon class. Her class will also be given in Houston in November, but the costs is $93 + materials. (Your cost in March will be $45, plus no travel or lodging. You can sign up in September.) Pictured is the umbrella I made at her class this summer. It was so much fun and the frame is quality. The description of her umbrella class is: These umbrellas are a delight and a thrill to make. I have yet to have a customer not be excited beyond belief when they finish one. They are not difficult to make. They can be personalized for college students with school colors or made for using as a sun shade. They are very functional as a rain umbrella. In this class you will make a 48 umbrella. The umbrella is made by sewing your chosen cotton fabric together into wedges, and then it is applied to the frame. Basic sewing knowledge is required. After these are sewn with cotton, they are waterproofed with a waterproof spray that is suitable for waterproofing camping equipment. There are many excellent brands on the market. For those going to the Houston Festival, one of the special exhibits is Quilts for Scrap Lovers from Judy s Books. Be sure to check it out. Judy Brown, Programs chair 8

9 Bee News Killer Bees: We are enjoying summer here at the killer bees. We have had a demo of our favorite tools and new tools, very informative. Some ladies are good at adapting tools typically not really meant for sewing. Last week we sewed pull string totes for the young people coming thru our foster home systems. A never ending supply is needed and we are happy to fill a small part of it. We finished these and planned a sew day for more next Thursday at 9AM, bring your machine or serger and join the fun. Retzler Hall in Sunshine Estates CC in Harlingen, Tx. Military Service Quilts Patrick Hawkins, VA Texas Valley Health Care System, gladly took possession of 62 quilts and 33 wheelchair quilts on Tuesday the 17th. A total of 95 quilts! Congratulations to the dedication and hard work of our outstanding members. The recent flooding will impact many veterans in the Valley and we are glad to help. That donation emptied the "coffers". It is time to get busy again to get ready for the fall season when temperatures drop and there is a greater need. We only have 19 bundled quilts ready for volunteers. Remember you can quilt these on your regular machine. We will be bundling the 40 quilt tops we have right now in the near future. If you would like to get a quilt or two to work on just call Renee at or Carla Mewhinney. Thanks for the work! 9
