1 We s t S u b u r b a n Q u i l t e r s G u i l d F ro m t h e P r e s i d e n t B e t t y L e r n e r President s Message: November Early in October, I had the great good fortune to take a class with Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably. I have admired Kaffe Fassett for many years, not only for his fabrics and quilts, but for his many creative talents. Kaffe has produced designs for knitting, needlepoint, mosaics, paintings, as well as fabric and quilts. His books are as wonderful for the settings and photography and they are for the designs. The Kaffe Fassett Collective (known on the internet as KFC which to me will always refer to chicken) includes fabric designs by Kaffe Fassett, Brandon Mably, and Phillip Jacobs. Each of their styles is different, but the Collective controls the colors so that all the fabrics can be used together. Color is such a personal concept. I once took a five day color theory class with Michael James. He had us produce a personal color wheel including all the colors which had personal meaning for each of us. My color wheel included lavender, olive, dusty rose and other shades with grey values. Michael James looked at my color wheel and said You must have had a very sad life. Not at all! To me those colors are serene, peaceful and free of conflict (I thought his colors were kind of garish so there!). Perceptions of color are very personal. Kaffe Fassett has no color theory. He draws inspiration from the things he sees in the world around. He puts pieces on the design wall, stands back and looks. He looks and looks and looks, changing here and shifting there until the quilt is perfect. Each person in the class had very different quilt although we were all working on the same pattern Check out Kaffe Fassett Collective on Facebook. This has been a true desire of ours to have a class with this inspirational master of color and design( opinion). This is our second time attending the show and will try to bring back some great stories and pictures. Footnote I needed to fill the space really. That is why the newsletter is out early as we leave on the 10/25 and back too late 11/4. 3 West Suburban Quilters Guild October Minutes, October 9, 2013 The meeting was called to order at 7:00 by the president, Betty Lerner. Announcements were made: there were no pins available for purchase at the meeting; a request was made to bring in articles for the Mittens and More drive. Show and Tell- the following projects were shown: A flannel quilt made from Pendleton skirtsa handappliqued quilt Hats and pincushions for the boutique A child s quilt with a matching doll quilt Hats for Mittens and More Boutique items: pin cushions, phone and Nook covers, ornament s A 12 by 12 Quilt Challenge block A Wizard of Oz wall hanging A wedding gift quilt Seasonal wall hangings A 2-color Quilt Challenge quilt Hot pads for the boutique The Block of the Month block A horse panel quilt Fabric postcards, one of which will be sent the Houston Quilt Festival for charity A Quilt Challenge quilt made of hand-dyed fabrics A large quilt for display at the Ronald McDonald House A baby quilt Small fabric mice for the boutique A Blue Underground inspired quilt Program Kim Schaefer, is a local quilter, author, fabric designer, and pattern designer shared her history and inspirations for her patterns and fabrics. She has designed more than 100 patterns and has published many books. She began designing fabric in 1999 for Andover. She designs with a pencil drawing first then hand-paints the design in wash. She showed sample of completed paper designs for fabric. She designs 3 4 fabric collections per year. Each fabric run for Andover is a minimum of 3,000 yards per design. Free patterns can be accessed on the Andover website. (Schaefer has a new baric line called Night and Day, with free pattern downloads for the black and white quilt.) The presentation followed, with help from her husband, with a trunk show of quilts created from and for her books. She and her husband then had drawings for charm packs. Block of the Month: the block for November needs a scant ¼ seam. Contrasting fall colors are requested: no pink fabrics. Charity Quilts: we continue to support Quilts for Kids and Quilts of Valor. Instructions for each are found in the Program Guide. Program: Susan Wojciechowski will be the presenter next month. Bring your UFO s in a brown bag to the December meeting. The Diamond Quilt Challenge submissions were shown and voted on. The group selected Leslie Thorkelson s design. Please sign up with Laura Krasinski to participate in the workshops. Membership: there were two guests in attendance. Quilt Show: the Friday night presenter needs a non-cat place to stay, Friday, March 14. The Quilters Toolbox Challenge information is on the website; the requirement is that 3 of 10 items be included in the quilt design. Raffle ticket money should be turned into Karen Hendrickson. There is a digital file picture of the quilt on the website. Members are needed to sell tickets, advertise and create boutique items. Patty Martin is hosting bees to create small projects for the boutique. These sessions are on Tuesdays from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at her house. There will be a sign-up available at the November meeting to sign up for quilt appraisals; the cost is $50.00 per quilt. Door Prizes: the winners were Julie Kozak, Holle Kelly, and Lisa Garms.
