1 From the President Ready for New Beginnings West Suburban Quilter s Guild April, 2013 Vol. 32, Issue 8 I think the Juncos have finally left my yard. In case you don't feed birds, Juncos are delightful small dark gray birds with dark eyes and yellow bills, members of the sparrow family. They prefer to hop on the ground and pick up small seeds. We see them hanging out underneath our birdfeeders in a sort of symbiotic relationship with the other winter birds who feed and drop seed, seemingly on purpose for the juncos and occasional rodent or three. Southern Wisconsin is right on the cusp of their summer and winter ranges, and so in this area we are used to seeing them all winter, and we know it is spring when they are gone. They may go north to Canada or Alaska for the summer, or they may go only to central Wisconsin, upper Michigan, Northern Minnesota. But they should leave southern Wisconsin in a typical Spring, and it is a sign that Spring has arrived when I no longer see them on the ground under the feeders. I am glad Spring is finally here. I miss the Juncos and their tenacity and persistent work. They show up every day, no matter the weather or the local environment. They are dependable. And they always make me smile. I'll be watching for them in the fall. I may see them when I visit parts of Northern Wisconsin. That will be fun... and comforting. Other signs of spring have been appearing. This morning a small roly poly little woodchuck waddled through our yard. I have always loved to see the baby animals that come in the spring. It speaks to me of new beginnings. We like to know that these are possible, even when we are not sure which new beginning we are seeking at this moment. I saw a bald eagle flying over our area this afternoon - - clearly on a migration journey, as it will not likely be nesting and staying in Menomonee Falls. But it's fun to see one so near. We are seeing many deer and other animals moving and grouping up, getting ready for babies and other events of the spring. The possibilities are endless! As we come close to the end of another program year (we have just two meetings before our summer break) and before a new Board of Directors and group of officers and Committee Chairs will take over the West Suburban Quilters' Guild Board. They will bring new and wonderful ideas and new ways of reaching out to members and of (Continued on page 5)

3 April 2013 Guild Information Library Corner Make a new family tradition and change the wall hanging each month. Enjoy the holidays and seasons as they pass with 12 seasonal wall hangings from more than 30 adorable designs. Each wall hanging features a large center design in Kim Schaefer's signature fun and whimsical style. You will receive an instruction booklet and full-sized applique patterns for each of Kim's designs. Use the fabrics you love - finish every quilt you start. New ideas for creating colorsplashed quilts with modern panache. Designs look more complex than they really are easy piecing and colorful fabric do all the work. Rich jewel tones juxtaposed with cool neutrals will make these projects pop! The masterminds West Suburban Quilt Guild Minutes, March, 2013 The meeting was called to order by the president, Karen Hendrickson, at 7:00. Announcements were made. First, Hospitality passed around the sign-up for the May potluck and also asked for members to sign up for treats for April. Two new members were introduced; there were also three guests in attendance. A few spots are available to serve on committees and officers next year. The president stated that there will be a board meeting in the Spring. Show and Tell Members shared many full-sized quilts, one which won honorable mention. Additionally, several Quilts for Kids, a tree skirt, wallet, an embellished block, behind Blue Underground Studios bring you ten colorful, new quilt projects that are perfect for your cherished scraps, a new collection of fat quarters, or just a wild mash-up of your favorite prints and batiks. Each design includes fabric requirements and cutting instructions for multiple quilt sizes. From the warmth by the fire Hot Chocolate quilt, to intriguing Black Forest and spicy LaChocolata quilts, you'll be captivated by the 15 projects in this book and by the shareable recipes that accompany a number of the projects. Milky browns and luscious cherry pinks in the Chocolate Covered Cherries quilt will inspire enthusiastic reviews. The Blueberries and White Chocolate quilt will have your mouth watering in anticipation. Easter Candy and Brownies and The Fourth of July celebrate the tastes of special holidays. In these projects, color selection is made easy by letting the fabric collection from manufacturers do the work for you. You'll marvel at the sumptuous results achieved with minimal effort. dyed fabric, a landscape farm scene, and a table cloth were also shown to the group. Program Kris Kirsch, a Wisconsin quilter who has won many awards, many including the Paducah quilt show, shared her innovative approach to updating quilt designs which she calls Tradition With a Twist. Kirsch collects vintage versions of modern quilts and shared them with the membership. She also showed several of her award winning quilts. She encouraged members to sign up for her blog. Business Meeting The president reminded the group of our 30 th Anniversary celebration. She thanked members of hospitality (Continued on page 5) 3

5 April 2013 (Continued from page 1) nurturing our Guild and our love of quilting. We will be challenged and we will learn new things in new ways, meet new people, and experience new possibilities. I am very excited to turn, with open hands, the leadership of the Guild over to new leaders who will bring a new spirit and new ideas to the governance and caretaking role over the group. I know in my heart that the group of wonderful women who have been asked and who said, "Yes" are exactly the leaders we need at this time. and I am excited for all of us! So, join me as we celebrate the coming of Spring and the welcoming of change and new beginnings! In former days there would be days of dancing and wine and work avoidance as the warm weather and budding trees were paid their due respect. When I was a little girl on May Day, we would spend several days making baskets out of bits of lace doilies and paper, glue and ribbon, then fill them with violets or jonquils or anything else that grew early enough. We would, under my mother's laughing direction, run up to the doors of our neighbors, hang the baskets on the front doors, ring the doorbell and run away, hiding behind a bush or porch to watch the smile when they found the little surprise gift. (Remember we talked earlier in the year about doing something nice and not getting found out?) I remember laughing from sheer joy, and spinning around until I fell on the grass, high with happiness, and not really knowing why, but knowing it felt great! Don't forget to bring your example of an WSQG challenge, block of the month, or other project from a past year to our meeting on April 10th. We'll share these at Show & Tell. In May we'll select a block for our WSQG logo. Help us make sure that we have a representative number of entries to choose from. If you have not thought about a block design, now is the time. Please participate in this -- we have nearly 100 members and I'd like to see nearly 100 entries! Wouldn't that be amazing? Times of change bring so many opportunities for us to take as our own. My wish for each of you as we begin this season of Spring is that you find a way to create an opportunity for yourself that is meaningful in your life and that you are able to build the resources and emotional tools to accomplish your work in making real that opportunity. Because you are amazing, Karen (Continued from page 3) committee, the volunteers of the charity projects, Elrid for her historical reflections, the officers, and the committee members. Remember the May meeting-the potluck- begins at 6:00. The church will be open at 5:00. For the April meeting, please bring show quilts from the past. Quilt Show, Putting the Pieces Together The Challenge Quilt is from the Quilter s Toolbox and must use 3 of 10 techniques. Program Committee Next month the program is needle felting, Dancing Needleworks, with Tricia Anderson. Raffle Quilt People are still needed to work on the quilt. Fabric contributions are also needed. March Door Prize Winners Terri Thomas, Karen Hendrickson, Mary Hartwig, Julie Cozad. Respectfully Submitted, Mitzi Horning, WSQG Secretary 5

All work days except for Saturday, April 13 are at my house. We will be working at the workshop church on April 13. Please consider joining us for one or all of these days. Please remember to bring fabric donations for the raffle quilt to the next guild meeting. We are still in need of a lot of fabric. I am asking for donations of washed, quilt store quality black fabric with white or grey printing. Please select small prints that contain mostly black. I am also asking for stark white on white fabrics. Thank you all for your generous support. Stephanie Strand Any organization is composed of many factors and a quilt guild is no different. Many members have to be actively involved to keep the group running smoothly. During West Suburban's three decades there have been 18 presidents with many opting to serve two years. Many of these woman are still active in our guild today. And where would the guild be without the numerous members who have been part of the program committees? These volunteers find speakers for the meetings, organize workshops, create special projects. Programs are the Life blood of any group! And then there are the hospitality workers who see that there are snacks-- for what fun would a meeting be without a nibble during break? The newsletter and its contributors keep us informed. Our members' contribution is to support all these volunteers and pitch in when needed. Kudos to everyone for making West Suburban Quilt Guild a smoothly running group for thirty years! Don't forget to locate past West Suburban projects for Show and Tell in April. It will be great fun to see samples of what we have done during our years together. Show and Tell Photos from 1989 Guess the members that are pictured in our newsletter this month for a little treat! 6
