1 PAGE 1 Meeting second Monday of each month at St. Thomas More Catholic Church 2900 Kimball Ave Manhattan, Kansas Social time at 8:30 a.m.; meeting begins at 9 a.m. Sometimes the best laid plans can change in moments. That's what happened to my husband and I as we started a long planned road trip to visit our son and daughter-in-law who have recently moved to Washington State. We had scheduled stops to visit other family and friends, included some side-trips for sightseeing along the way, and had motels booked ahead for a place to rest at the end of each day. All of that changed yesterday! We spent the day at my husband's family reunion which was great. Then we picked up my sister to make a short road trip to decorate family gravesites for Memorial weekend. On the way back to her home in the evening, our plans changed abruptly when our car struck and a killed a deer. Every airbag in the car deployed, and blessedly none of us experienced any serious injury as we were all wearing our seatbelts. However the car was totaled! So today we are nursing our aching muscles and joints and coming up with some alternative methods of travel to get to Washington. What does all of this have to do with quilting? Well, just like having a major change in vacationing, sometimes the end result is not only just as good but even better. We're grateful we had no serious injuries, and are still looking forward to visiting our children. The way we get there may be different, but we are determined to have a joyous time with them. It's not the end of the world, (although it might have been). Sometimes in quilting we have to make changes when things aren't going as we planned. Our choice of fabrics or techniques don't work as we thought they would. We find we didn't measure something correctly and run out of fabric. We may have to rip out a few seams and start over. But, it's not the end of the world. In fact, it's not even close! And we can always start over and be grateful for the ability to try again. Hope you all have a happy and SAFE summer. I'll see you again in July. June in June... June Lynn Doyle will present Bloomin Seasons Trunk Show that will have Spring projects leaning to quirky views of life. The afternoon workshop (12:30-3:30) Will be creating a project using one of June s kits. I had a huge mishap with my computer and lost ALL my document files. Thus, we had to reconstruct the newsletter to the best of our abilities. You may notice that it looks a bit different than usual, especially the last page if you are reading it online. The Quilters' Guild has maintained a library for many years. Members may check out the books for 25 cents a month. The library currently includes about 400 pattern books, most published in the last 20 years. Subjects range from beginning piecing and appliqué through hand and machine quilting. We have made a point of collecting baby and children's quilt books and Christmas and seasonally themed publications. There are also sections on miniature quilts, landscape and art quilts, and borders and finishing. Some unusual topics covered are 3-D piecing, embellishments, hexies, wearable items and dying fabric. The library also includes reference books that help in identifying patterns in old quilts that members might have, including notebooks of Kansas City Star classic patterns. Wichita Area Quilt Show Thursday, June 21 Please call Judy Marshall, , if you are interested in going to the Wichita Quilt Show on June 21st. The group will need additional drivers if the interest is high. Riders are encouraged to donate $10 to their driver for gas. June Workshop with June Lynn Doyle There are spaces available in the June workshop with June Lynn Doyle. The class fee is $20 and additional kit fee depending on what you choose. Call Lana Arpin, , to sign up and she can you what you need to bring for the class. 3 PAGE 3 There will be some ladies from the Greater Kansas City Quilters Guild visiting us in June. They are bringing their opportunity quilt to show and have asked if they can sell tickets. I will be going to their meeting in July to do the same with our opportunity quilt. Please make them feel welcome. 5 PAGE 5 While at the Homestead National Monument, Beatrice, NE, in May, I was fortunate to view the National Parks in Quilts Exhibit. Inspired by the centennial of the National Parks Service, Nebraska artists selected 13 National Parks as inspiration for this traveling collection of quilts. These quilts were on display across America from fall of 2015 until now. In light of the 2018 KPQG challenge, I thought, by sharing some of these creations, people might be inspired as they Discover the Flint Hills through Fabric.
