2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission Our Mission: To provide end-stage organ failure patients an opportunity to lead an extraordinary life. Our Vision: To provide the highest quality, most cost-effective, multidisciplinary care to the community of patients suffering from end-stage organ disease, lead advances in the care of these patients through innovative research, and train the next generation of tranplant physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and administrators. Background Vanderbilt Transplant Center is one of the south's premier providers of solid organ and stem cell transplantation. Located in Nashville, Tennessee, the Transplant Center is part of the Vanderbilt Medical Center and Vanderbilt University campus. Organized 26 years ago by Dr. William H. Frist, Vanderbilt Transplant Center is a fullservice, multidisciplinary transplant center specializing in heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas and stem cell transplantation. Vanderbilt Transplant Center recognizes the value of treating and supporting each transplant patient as a whole person. As such, Vanderbilt's doctors, nurses and staff have always focused not only on one aspect of transplantation but the whole process, from basic research to patient education. View a timeline of the Vanderbilt Transplant Center below: 1962 Vanderbilt performed its first kidney transplant and is one of the oldest, largest transplant programs in the U.S. To date, Vanderbilt has performed more than 4,000 adult and pediatric kidney transplants. 1985Vanderbilt performed the first pancreas transplant in Tennessee (February)Vanderbilt performed Tennessee's first pediatric heart transplant (April)Vanderbilt performed its first heart transplant. To date, Vanderbilt has performed more than 500 adult and pediatric heart transplants. 1987Vanderbilt performed the first successful combined heart/lung transplant in the Southeast. 1989William H. Frist, M.D. and J. Harold Helderman, M.D. founded the Vanderbilt Transplant Center as a full-service, multidisciplinary provider of transplantation. 1995The Vanderbilt Return-to-Work Program began helping transplant patients retrain for new vocational goals and obtain jobs. 2000Vanderbilt performed its first triple organ transplant of heart, lungs, and liver one of only eight performed worldwide. 2006Vanderbilt Transplant Center developed the Transplant Pharmacy Residency Program and the Transplant Administrator Specialty Program. 2007Kidney Transplant Program achieved 45-year milestone and surpassed 3,500 kidney transplants. 2008Vanderbilt performs first combined heart/kidney transplant. 2009Vanderbilt performs 1,000th liver transplant. 2010Berlin device (VAD) used for the first time in Tennessee by Vanderbilt Pediatric Heart Transplant Program. 2011Seth J. Karp, M.D. named Director, Vanderbilt Transplant Center. 2014Douglas W. Hanto, M.D., PhD, named Pediatric Liver Transplant Surgical Director and Director, Vanderbilt Transplant Center. Impact Accomplishments: Increased outreach to referring physicians thereby improving access for disadvantaged patients. Marked increase in utilization of Bridge to Transplant and Destination Therapy through Ventricular Assist Device Implantation New state of the art transplant unit catering to transplant patients Rollout of webbased online tool to screen potential living kidney donors to increase access to living donation. Goals: Increase organ availability through public outreach and education regarding donation. Improve patient throughput from evaluation to transplant for all transplant programs. Expand transplant-specific quality initiatives throughout inpatient and outpatient areas. Needs Optimize length of stay for donors by decreasing expected mean Length of Stay by 1 day from 3.5 to 2.5. Increase living kidney donation rates through expanded educational efforts and collaboration with Alliance for Paired Donation to increase kidney paired donation. Improve living kidney donor follow up and education during the first two years post donation. Increase efficiency of transplant center processes and reduce resource utilization in an effort for cost containment. Improved patient access for all organ programs.
