3 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The International Rescue Committee responds to the world s worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. Background The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC offers lifesaving care and life-changing assistance to refugees forced to flee from war, persecution or natural disaster. At work today in over 40 countries and 28 U.S. cities, we restore safety, dignity and hope to millions who are uprooted and struggling to endure. The IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Charlottesville opened its doors in 1998 and has resettled more than 3500 refugees and other eligible immigrants since then. The IRC in Richmond opened as a sub-office of Charlottesville in Impact The IRC in Richmond opened in October 2015 to provide employment, education, and health services to refugees and other eligible immigrants in the Greater Richmond Area. In November 2016, IRC began resettling refugees and Special Immigrant Visa holders in Richmond. The office currently assists over 600 refugees annually for one or more services. Current services include: - Resettlement - comprehensive case management including initial housing, referrals to services, volunteer support - Health - assistance with referrals to a medical home as well as specialists including mental health services - Employment - assistance with initial job placement to support economic self-sufficiency as well as career advancement services to help with those ready to return to a professional career or seeking workforce training. - Education and Integration - English language classes, job readiness training, financial literacy, and life skills to support integration into the local community. - Immigration - services provided by an accredited staff member to help with obtaining legal permanent residency, naturalization as a U.S. citizen, family reunification, among others. Needs The IRC in Richmond needs: - Financial contributions that can be used to meet emergency needs such as rent, utilities and food for families seeking employment or to cover medical needs not covered by Medicaid, as well as to support supplemental programming such as English and other classes and trainings; health services, and special activities to help refugee women enter the workforce for the first time. - Volunteers - Family Mentors, ESL Tutors, Career Mentors, assisting with transportation to medical appointments and other services, Interns to support staff, among others. - In-kind donations - household goods, winter clothing, vehicles to be given to refugees needing transportation to work - perhaps even a van for staff use! - Advisors to help IRC with community outreach and resource development, connecting us with individuals and organizations wanting to learn more about and support our work.
