2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission Develop and produce communicative artistic products to benefit our common humanity and environment. Background The founders of Tennessee Players, Thurston and his wife of 58 years, Georgianna moore, have been involved in the arts as a couple since their marriage in Thurston's interest began even earlier, as a teenager in the late 1930's, chronicling the popular film and music of the day, and dabling in writing his own lyrics and scores. By the late 1940's, he was publishin for the then Hill Billy Music Industry, later to be known as Country and Western (C&W) and now just Country. In the 1950's he and Georgianna oerated an out door weekend C&W theme park in Verona Lake Kentucky, booking in the No. 1 stars of the day, who thrilled hundreds of fans each Sundday. Thurston knew them all and they knew him, from the Carter Family right through to some of the latest performers in the business today. The Theme Park was sold in 1960, but the publishing business was continued until the mid 1970's, when the Moore's moved to New York and concentrated fully on theatre and the arts from there on. The Moore's moved to Nashville in 1983, officially launching Tennessee Players in Georgianna was the principle writer and director, while Thurston managed the production aspects. They were however fully capable and compatible in either role. Sadly Georgianna passed away in In addition to her stage writings, directing, and acting, she also penned many poems and children's stories, Her last work was 'The Message of the Sunflower", available on CD, read by her husband. His autobiography is scheduled to be published this fall,
3 Impact Tennessee Players artistic products have impacted the middle Tennessee population as well as our surrounding Southeastern State Neighbors with a multitude of standard and original theatrical productions presented in a format to both entertain as well as educate. These unique productions were initiated with A Christmas Window in December 1986 ~ A Shopping Center store front window encasing a live Victorian era family, miming their Christmas Morning celebration. It played to hundreds of passer-by shoppers for free over a month long run. From then through the 1990 s Tennessee Players produced unique theatrical presentations, most of which were original works of Thurston and Georgiana Moore, created to aid and support such organizations as Nashville Public Television, The Nashville Theatre Alliance, various local churches, Two Rivers Mansion, the Universities of Fisk, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, to name a few. Though these productions were steeped in entertainment value, they were also specifically tailored to teach and inspire; focusing on such historical subjects as President Abraham and first Lady Mary Todd Lincoln, the Civil War, Samuel Clemens, Charles Dickens, and Dr. Albert Schweitzer. In addition to playing locally, such theatre peaces were toured in many surrounding states. Tennessee Players also produced the Theatre Scene, a weekly radio program dedicated to enlighten the public about theatre activities locally as well as nationally. The Theatre Scene aired on WAMB radio from 1991 to It is now retained in Paley Center for the Media, in New York City and Los Angeles, California, as well as the Nashville Public Library. In 2000 a more serious venture was undertaken, Symposium 2000 a 16-day event developed by Tennessee Players and hosted by Vanderbilt University. This event focused on Global Peace and Unity via workshop presentations and seminars presented by multitudes of international speakers among them were: Robert Thurman, Arun Gandhi, Marcus Borg, and Naomi Tutu. And, in 2002, Thurston Moore himself was invited to be the Keynote Speaker opening the World Peace Conference in December of that year in New Delhi India. During the past decade the Organization has focused it s resources and efforts primarily on emphasizing the peace philosophies of Nobel Peace Prize recipient Dr. Albert Schweitzer. This work has been sensitively handled by collaborating with Dr. Schweitzer s Daughter Rhena, and Granddaughter Dr. Christian Schweitzer Engel, along with the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship. Two principle theatrical works have spearheaded this effort. First, the Words of Albert Schweitzer and the Music of Bach, a multimedia presentation utilizing photography, music, and acting, simultaneously, on the same stage. It has played at Nashville s Schremerhorn Center, the Washington National Cathedral, and the majority of U.S. States, as well as several cities abroad. In 2009, a second work was created, Memoirs from Africa, a one-man stage show chronicling the life and work of Dr. Albert Schweitzer. It s Tennessee debut was at Fisk University, and it has had showings at Tennessee Tech University, Aspen Colorado, and Columbus Ohio. In 2010 it was filmed at the Renaissance Center in Dickson, Tennessee. And to date, more than 1,000 DVD s have been made available to individuals and organizations to inspire viewers to adopt some aspects of Dr. Schweitzer s peaceful philosophies. Both of these works are ongoing and available through the organization s web site. Needs The need to meld art, education, inspiration, and positive human direction is ever upon us. While education, inspiration, and positive human direction are the essence of nutrients, vitamins, and medicine, making for mankind a better life experience; art is the flavor making it palatable.
