2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The mission of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation is to restore and sustain the Chesapeake Bay s ecosystem by substantially improving the water quality and productivity of the watershed, with respect to water clarity, resilience of the system, and diversity and abundance of living resources, and to maintain a high quality of life for the people of the Chesapeake Bay region. Background Since 1967, CBF has been the voice of those who care about restoring North America's largest estuary. Our motto "Save the Bay" has defined that mission to the millions of people who live in the six-state Chesapeake Bay watershed. CBF is the largest and only independent, Bay-wide organization that exists solely to restore and protect the vitality of the Bay. Impact CBF runs a multitude of programs that work toward our mission of a clean and healthy Bay. Examples include the following: Education Programs: Our award winning environmental education programs have supported our organizational mission by providing meaningful field experiences and action-oriented restoration projects for students, extensive year-long high quality professional development for teachers, and classroom curriculum in Virginia for over 30 years. The environmental education programs take more than 14,000 Virginia students and teachers on outdoor field trips each year. In order to make our education programs successful and relevant, our programs are designed specifically to reinforce the Virginia State Standards of Learning and are included in countless teachers annual curriculum plans. Our classroom curriculum was also created in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Education. Oyster Restoration: CBF staff members oversee oyster restoration activities that include our oyster gardening program, where volunteers are trained to nurture baby oysters for one year and return them to CBF for stocking on reefs in the Hampton Roads area and our oyster farm. CBF s oyster farm began as a small-scale operation to grow oysters via aquaculture for restoration. After several years of success, CBF switched to a spat-on-shell method of growing oysters which has significantly and more efficiently increased the number of oysters grown annually. Legislative Issues: In Virginia, CBF s overall goal has been to work with legislators and partner groups to reduce pollution into Virginia s rivers, streams, and the Bay. In past years, CBF has worked to limit pollution coming from sewage treatment plants. With successes in this area, CBF has recently changed tactics to focus on curbing pollution emanating from agricultural sources, working with a partnership of agriculture and environmental groups to request state funding for farmers to reduce runoff from their lands. Needs As a member-supported not-for-profit organization, CBF relies on the financial support of individuals, corporations, foundations, and grant-making agencies to fund our activities. 4 Programs Programs Environmental Protection and Restoration Description In the four centuries since the exploration of Captain John Smith, the Chesapeake Bay has lost half of its forested shoreline, more than half of its wetlands, nearly 80 percent of its underwater grasses, and more than 98 percent of its oysters. Strategy Environmental Education Description Environmental education is the most powerful tool we have to inspire stewardship and effect improvements in the Bay. Since 1970, CBF has provided outdoor learning experiences for more than 1.5 million students, teachers, and adults. Through a comprehensive suite of educational programs, CBF offers hands-on learning opportunities designed to support state standards of education. Each year, CBF's education programs: educate more than 35,000 students, teachers, and adults through handson field experiences that get participants on the Bay and its rivers; engage hundreds of middle and high school students through our Student Leadership Program; expand support for environmental education by offering on-the-water learning experiences and professional development courses to 80 school principals and 400 teachers; and, work with school districts throughout the watershed to integrate environmental education with core curriculum classroom learning. Budget $6,400, Strategy Advocacy Description The Chesapeake Bay Foundation and its members, more than 200,000 strong, are the strongest and most effective voice that exists for protecting and restoring the Bay and its rivers and streams. We work at local, state, and federal levels for effective laws and regulations that will reduce pollution, restore vital natural systems like oyster reefs, forests, and wetlands, and encourage smart growth in our communities. 5 Litigation Description CBF's Litigation Department uses carefully chosen legal action as another tool for advancing the restoration and protection of the Chesapeake Bay, its rivers, lakes, and streams. Litigation is used not only to protect and enforce the current environmental laws but to bring about environmentally friendly change within our legal system. CBF attorneys argue cases in federal and state courts within the watershed and file amicus curiae - also called Friend of the Court - briefs in related environmental lawsuits. Budget $0.00 5

8 Management Executive Director/CEO Executive Director Term Start Jan Experience Mr. William C. Baker William C. Baker is President of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF),the largest and only independent organization that exists solely to protect and restore the vitality of the Chesapeake Bay. CBF--known by its motto, Save the Bay - has an annual operating budget of $25 million, is supported by over 200,000 members, representing every state in the Union and 14 foreign countries. It is staffed by more than 170 full-time employees operating out of offices in the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, but works throughout the six-state Chesapeake Bay watershed, as well as 16 separate environmental education centers. Mr. Baker, a 1976 graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, has been on the staff of CBF since 1976 and Chief Executive Officer of the organization since He serves on a number of Chesapeake Bay-related committees, commissions, and advisory boards. He is a founding member of the Living Classrooms Foundation, the Metropolitan Washington Smart Growth Alliance, and the Institute for the Venice Lagoon, an international body concerned with the environmental problems and possible solutions for the City of Venice, Italy. He is an Honorary Member of the Garden Club of America. He is Vice Chairman of Johns Hopkins Medicine (the governing board for the hospital and medical school), and a director of the Baltimore Community Foundation. A past trustee of Washington College, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Public Service in He was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Baltimore in He serves on UMBC s President s Board of Visitors, as well as, one corporate board, the Brown Advisory and Trust Co.
