CANDIDATE GORD BEDIENT Membership # Gord is seeking to be re-elected to the Board of Directors of Saskatoon Co-op. His wife Shari and he have four children and four grandchildren with one child still at home and attending university. He knows what it is like to want the best for your family and if elected, he is determined to ensure that the Saskatoon Co-op plays an important role in helping you achieve this. Gord grew up in Hanley where his parents farmed but has made Saskatoon his home for the last thirty five years. He is a past member of the Board of Directors for Saskatoon United Way and is still active with different not for profit organizations. He is also employed as an electrician at the Agrium Potash Mine and is Treasurer and grievance chair of the United Steelworkers Local Over his last term, your Board of Directors has continued to start and completed many new and exciting ventures that will benefit your Co-op in the future, he would like to continue to be a part of that growth. As a father, community activist, small business owner and a journeyman tradesperson, he believes he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Board.
CANDIDATE DAN DANIELSON Membership # My name is Dan Danielson and I am running for our Saskatoon Co-op Board. I am a farmer and an educator. My wife Sharon a long-time credit union employee and I have been loyal co-op supporters for many years. Generally, we say If the Co-op doesn t have it, we really don t need it. I have previous board experience as a trustee and board chair at Saskatoon Public Schools the largest school division in the province. I am a member of the University of Saskatchewan Senate, the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission, as well as a previous provincial board member with the Saskatchewan School Boards Association and the Saskatchewan Assessment Management Agency. I have a Masters Degree in education administration and degrees in economics and education along with an advanced certification in H-R Management. I am a local author and have written a humorous book on farm life called Memories of a Suitcase Farmer which is selling very well in the bookstores. My most recent book is called Local Leadership and Great Governance We Can All Make A Difference. It is being used to motivate, orientate and educate local board members. I believe that it is important to treat our employees and their union with respect and fairness, improve board membership communications and offer quality education on the democratic co-op principles for employees, members and consumers. The future of our locally owned and controlled co-operatives depends on those improvements. I ask for your vote so I can use my education and experience to contribute to a more positive and profitable future for our co-op. Thank you, Dan Danielson BA, Bed, PGD, Med, Pro-Dir.
CANDIDATE DENIS GILBERTSON Membership # My name is Denis Gilbertson, and I have been a Director with Saskatoon Co-op for three years. I have been married 24 years to my wife, Julie, and we have two children, my son Jesse who is seventeen, and my daughter Anna, who is fifteen. After being in the broadcast industry for 27 years, I left for a change in Since then, I have been doing freelance media work, as well as home restoration. The reason I believe I can add to the Board is my ability to work with others, and those who have different opinions. A board that consists of different sides and points of view leads to more balanced decisions. My background leaned heavy on a large group working together. I believe I can continue to bring this thought process to the Saskatoon Co-op Board of Directors.
CANDIDATE MICHELLE NEUFELD Membership # Michelle Neufeld was born in Rosthern Saskatchewan and raised in Saskatoon from the age of four. She has a bachelor s degree in sociology, which included an internship at the Saskatchewan Legislature where she worked closely with MLA's and government officials and gained a strong understanding of Saskatchewan politics and our governmental system. After University she spent three years working with tenant associations at seniors high rises through Saskatoon Housing Authority. In that role, she oversaw all of the operations of the associations, often acting as president, secretary and treasurer. Currently, she works as a development officer at the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Michelle believes strongly in supporting local businesses and especially ones that treat their employees fairly. As a director, she hopes to maintain the Saskatoon co-op's image of a fair employer and an ally for local farmers. She also hopes to encourage support for shopping local from the younger generation.
CANDIDATE ERIKA RITCHIE Membership # Erika Ritchie has been a proud supporter and patron of the Saskatoon Cooperative Association for more than 25 years. During this time she has been an active member of the Saskatoon community, raising her family and building her career. She is a professional engineer and organizational leader with a career that has spanned both the public and private sectors in Saskatchewan. Known for her progressive thought leadership in the areas of environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility, Erika offers a broad array of board governance and executive level experience. As an environmental professional Erika s work has focused on achieving consensus-based solutions that protect our environment and achieve prosperity for all. Her career spans technical, managerial and leadership roles for locally based private enterprises, learning institutions and the provincial government. Most recently she was assistant deputy minister for the Ministry of Environment where she provided organizational and strategic leadership to a division responsible for more than 500 employees and a budget of $100 million dollars annually. Erika has been actively involved in a number of local, provincial and national level advisory boards, committees and service-based organizations. She served on the board of RoadMap a locally-based sustainability enterprise, as board member and vice-president for the Unitarian Congregation of Saskatoon, and as chair of the Environment Committee for the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan. She has been a volunteer advisor to the Saskatoon Community Foundation, the City of Saskatoon Environmental Advisory Committee, the Canadian Chemical Producers Association, and the SES Solar Cooperative. In support of her children s activities, Erika has been an active member of Sask Athletics and Scouts Canada. Erika is grateful for the opportunity for her children to participate in the Saskatchewan Youth Cooperative Program as camp participants and staff over the past several years. She believes that the cooperative model is uniquely aligned with the tenets of corporate social responsibility and is one of its key business strengths. Erika is highly skilled in accountability-based leadership, fostering healthy group processes, strategic planning and achieving mutually beneficial and consensus-based solutions that support leading organizations. She looks forward to bringing these assets and attributes to bear and with the support of its members serving as a board director for the Saskatoon Cooperative Association.
CANDIDATE GRANT WHITMORE Membership # Grant is married with a family of four and lives in Grandora area, west of Saskatoon. He has been employed with agriculture related businesses in Saskatoon for 18 years. He attended the University of Saskatchewan and operated a farm in Harris, SK from 1977 to Grant was on the Board of Feudal Co-op for 18 years and was the delegate to FCL. Grant served as a Sask Wheat Pool delegate for ten years. Grant also was a Member of the Legislature of Saskatchewan for eight years. He has previously served on the Board of Saskatoon Co-op and held the position of chairman of the Audit Committee and member of the Executive committee, Vice-President and President. Grand has a strong commitment to the co-operative structure in Saskatoon. The Saskatoon Co-op plays an important role in the economic and social well-being of the City. It has proven it can serve a diverse membership base, be it the farmer member at the Ag Centre, the grocery shopper at Westview or the new home buyer at the Contract Centre. The Co-op continues its success but improvements must continue to meet the new challenges. How does the Co-op reach out to others in the community? How does the Co-op manage growth with securing a strong financial future? How does the Co-op engage the increasing membership base? These are the questions that are ongoing. These are the important areas that he will address as a board member, and be front and centre at the Board table.
