2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission Our mission is to preserve and interpret the historical value of Belle Meade Plantation and to educate the public about its significance in American culture. Background Belle Meade Plantation is a 30 acre historic site 6 miles west of Nashville. The centerpiece of the property is the Belle Meade mansion built in This Greek revival house was home to five generations of the Harding- Jackson family, original owners of the Belle Meade Farm. The farm was a thoroughbred nursery famous for breeding and training championship race horses. After flourishing throughout the 19th century the farm encompassed 5,400 acres and was one of the largest private estates in Nashville. However, the twentieth century brought financial hardship for the family and when the farm was sold in 1903 most of the acreage was developed into Belle Meade Park. The house was occupied until 1953 when it was sold to the state of Tennessee. The State deeded the 30 acre property to the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee s Antiquities and the group opened the site as a museum in With years of restoration, the house appears now as it did in the Palmy days of the 1880 s. Many of the Harding and Jackson family possessions have been returned and can be seen in the house today. Although the old farm is gone, you can still visit and learn about this fascinating piece of horse racing history. Impact Belle Meade Plantation continues to evolve in its 203 year history, but the two stalwarts for our site today are preservation and education. As history becomes an extinct subject in many classrooms curriculums, our telling of our story may be the only lesson in history many children may learn. The whole story includes horses, people, places, landscape and the role that these factors played on the farm. From the evolution of a log cabin hewn from the wilderness to an opulent plantation era home and renowned thoroughbred nursery and stud; from slave artisans and craftsmen to freed men with nationally recognized talents and skills, we continue with our preservation mindset of the love and care of our landscape. It is all here with a fascinating story to tell from the past generations to the present. Belle Meade Plantation provides a link between Nashville's roots for this and future generations. Three of our major initiatives this year are: 1. Continue the restoration of each of our outbuildings and Carriage House so every building on site is interpreted and open for touring. 2. Tripling the number of children that come to the site on an education field trip regaurdless of their ability to pay. 3. As technology evolves, find new ways to bring the site to the classroom to facilitate all needs and budgets Three major accomplishments from the past year include: 1. Bringing back horses to the site along with fencing a paddock and turn out shed 2.Renovating the 3rd floor of the Mansion and making a Curatorial space and classroom out of former unused space 3. Removing the old heat and air system from the flood and replacing it with an energy effecient and enviromentally friendly Geo-thermal system. Needs 1. The ongoing preservation of the mansion and artifacts. 2. The preservation and further development of entire historic landscape. 3. Continuing development of education programs, including helping needy students and schools finance field trips. 4. Further interpretation of the role played by African Americans in the History of Belle Meade becoming the nation s leading thoroughbred nursery. 5. Interpretation of equestrian history and on-going preservation of carriages, stables and tack. Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer Mailing a checkin-kind donations Service Categories Primary Organization Category Arts,Culture & Humanities / Historical Organizations Secondary Organization Category Arts,Culture & Humanities / History Museums 2
3 Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Davidson As a premier tourist destination, Belle Meade Plantation serves clients on a national and international level every single day. Many of our members, donors, and patrons are from the immediate Nashville area. Board Chair Statement To effectively meet our mission of preservation and education at Belle Meade Plantation we have had to reinvent ourselves. That has caused us to look at our programming as well as the property. With our Bicentennial Celebration this year the first thing we have focused on was the condition of the property- if we were not taking care of the property, then donors would not be interested in helping us. Major emphasis has been placed on the mansion and the carriage house. We raised money because we had specific needs and we were able to prove to the greater community that we were well managed with a sound fiscal balanced budget. We have looked at bringing horses back to Belle Meade to tie into our educational program and received approval from the city, as well as a donor to help with a turn out stable. We have looked and are moving towards a business plan that will develop revenue from our property and branding our image and message. We have the limitless resources of excitement, dedication and vision shared and adopted with our staff. Grants from outside sources only come with a sound fiscal policy, a strong and vibrant staff and a compelling reason for the community to get involved. The history of Nashville is the history of Tennessee. With 146,000 visitors who without exception say that experience at Belle Meade Plantation is not only positive but most instructive is the reward that provides us with a better place to live. We say those who move to Nashville do not want to leave. If they leave, they want to come back. Belle Meade Plantation plays a part in that quality of life that is hard to measure- but you are glad to know that the Belle Meade Plantation is there, not only for us, but future generations as well. Sincerely, John T. Rochford, President, Board of Directors CEO Statement For two hundred and three years Belle Meade Plantation has opened its doors to Nashville and its visitors. Today this National Registered home remains preserved and open daily to the public despite receiving no funds from state or federal sources. New emphasis is being placed on the entire historic fabric of our 20 plus acres including trees, gardens, stone walls and all out-buildings. The equestrian history is also being emphasized as is our African American history as it relates to the skilled workers that trained, groomed and rode our thoroughbreds to victory and made Belle Meade the nation s leading thoroughbred nursery. We hope to expand our education offerings to school children to allow all kids, regardless of ability to pay, the chance to attend educational outings and summer camp offerings. Technology is allowing us to develop new ways to bring our history directly to the classroom, even if that classroom is across the world! Belle Meade Plantation is a living, breathing historic site that offers children and adults the chance to learn, relax and just enjoy the splendor of this part of Nashville s history that vibrantly enters its third century welcoming Nashville s guest. We hope you will join us on the journey. Regards, Alton Kelley, President, Belle Meade Plantation 3
