2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission Country Music Foundation, Inc., which operates the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, collects, preserves, and interprets the evolving history and traditions of country music. Through exhibits, publications, and educational programs, the Museum teaches its diverse audiences about the enduring beauty and cultural importance of country music. Background The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum opened more than 50 years ago on Music Row, and moved to its landmark facility in downtown Nashville in It unveiled a 210,000 square foot expansion in 2014, more than doubling its space with dynamic state-of-the-art galleries, additional archival storage, classrooms, retail stores, and special event spaces. The Museum's core exhibition immerses visitors in the history and sounds of country music, its origins and traditions, and the stories and voices of many of its honored artists and personalities. More than a dozen limited-engagement exhibitions each year expand the Museum's presentation of American musical history, like the exploration of the career of Hall of Fame member Loretta Lynn (Loretta Lynn: Blue Kentucky Girl), and illuminate the continuity with contemporary star recording artists like Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Chris Stapleton, and Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. In addition to world-class exhibitions, the Museum includes the 776-seat CMA Theater, the 213-seat Ford Theater, and the 7,500 square foot Taylor Swift Education Center. It also operates Hatch Show Print, one of the oldest continuously-operating letterpress print shops in the country, and Historic RCA Studio B, Nashville's oldest surviving recording studio. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum has developed multiple platforms to make its collection accessible to a wider audience. From weekly instrument demonstrations to its flagship songwriting program for schools, Words & Music, the Museum offers an extensive schedule of over 1,100 annual educational programs. The Museum also operates CMF Records, a Grammy-winning reissue label, and CMF Press, which releases exhibit-related books in cooperation with Vanderbilt University Press and other major trade publishing houses. The Museum's collection of 2.5 million objects, considered the finest and most complete of its kind in the world, provides the foundation for all of its activities. Holdings include musical instruments, costumes, sound recordings, books, periodicals, songbooks, sheet music, photographs, business documents, films, and videotapes. The Museum's Digital Archive offers over 80,000 objects for reference (digi.countrymusichalloffame.org). With these resources, staff members develop exhibitions, interpretive tours, and in-school and on-site educational public programs for children, families, and adults. 2
3 Impact The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum preserves and teaches the evolving history of country music, and has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums for 21 years. With an unrivalled collection of over 2.5 million objects and over 1,100 educational and public programs offered annually, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum is one of the most-visited history museums in America. 1) Attendance: For the third consecutive year, the Museum welcomed more than one million annual visitors (1.2 million in 2017; 1.17 million in 2016; and 1.08 million in 2015), placing it among the ten most-visited history museums in America. 2) Major exhibitions: The Museum maintains a comprehensive permanent exhibition which traces country's history from its nineteenth-century folk origins to its current popularity. It supports this central exhibition with original limited-run exhibitions focused on an artist or a movement in broad format and supported by multi-tiered educational offerings. In 2017, the Museum presented twelve limited-run feature exhibitions, which incorporated previously unseen objects and presented new scholarship, and extended through 2017 the run of the awardwinning exhibition Dylan, Cash, and Nashville Cats: A New Music City, which celebrated Nashville's top-flight session players of the late 60s and early 70s and the diverse recording artists who came to town to record with them. In May 2018, the Museum opened the major exhibition Outlaws & Armadillos: Country's Roaring 70s, which explores this influential era of cultural and artistic exchange between Nashville, Tennessee and Austin, Texas. 3) Educational programming: With over 1,100 unique programs, the Museum reached 101,407 learners of all ages in Educational programs range from conversations and performances by country music's top songwriters in our weekly Songwriter Sessions and family workshops that offer basic guitar, banjo, and mandolin instruction to the flagship curriculum-based Words & Music program, which teaches students the art of lyric writing. School programs alone reached more than 12% of Metro Nashville Public Schools, with over 60 schools participating free of charge. 4) Archival access: Digitally preserving more than 10,000 objects each year, the Museum makes its Digital Archives, containing images and recordings from the Museum's collection, available online at digi.countrymusichalloffame.org. People from all 50 states and more than 90 countries access the more than 80,000 digital files each day. The Museum's goals during 2018 include: 1) Sustaining its position as a top ten history museum in attendance, budget, and best practices, according to the American Alliance of Museums' research; 2) Ensuring its mission-based programs exhibitions, public programs, physical and digital collections, and school programs maintain excellence and increase access and participation; 3) Guaranteeing the ability to support these programs through contributed and earned revenue and careful facility and financial management. Needs The Museum's pressing needs include: 1) Support for its curriculum-based Words & Music lyric-writing program ($350,000 in 2018). 2) Support for collection conservation and digitization ($600,000). 3) Funding and equipment to capture oral histories of country music legends ($250,000). 5) Hardware and software enhancements to power the Museum's Digital Archive, website, live-streaming of program content, etc. ($1,000,000). 6) Funding to support expanded outreach programming to youth in Davidson County, TN ($50,000). 5 Programs Programs Exhibitions Description The Museum presents and interprets its collection through relevant, engaging exhibits. Galleries showcase rigorous scholarship by prominent co-curating scholars and incorporate previously-unseen materials and artifacts. The Museum's permanent exhibit, Sing Me Back Home, traces country's history from its folk origins to its current popularity. Through artifacts, photographs, original recordings, archival video, films, touch-screen interactive media, and informational text panels, Sing Me Back Home immerses visitors in the history and sounds of country music, its meanings, and the lives and voices of many of its honored personalities. In addition to Sing Me Back Home, the Museum curated and presented 12 original exhibitions in 2016, featuring members of the Country Music Hall of Fame and contemporary artists, as well as thematic exhibitions that showcase Tennessee and country music's impact on American art. Population Served,, School Programs Description The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum delivers school programming in three ways: 1) Classroom visits to the Museum; 2) Museum and artist outreach visits to schools; 3) Distance learning. In total, these programs reach over 36,000 students annually, with more than 33,000 students from Tennessee. School programs assist teachers in addressing Common Core, Tennessee State, and national curriculum standards in social studies, music, science, language arts, and visual art. Programs focus on music, history, and musical instruments. In 2017, more than 500 school programs drew 43,884 student visitors from throughout Tennessee. The Museum provides free programming, admission, and travel support to Metro Nashville Public Schools students. The Community Counts program extends free admission to Middle Tennessee K-12 students; provides a 25% discount for adults; and makes available a Community Counts Passport which provides two adult admissions at all 21 Nashville Public Library branches. 6 Public Programs Description Public programs expand on the stories told through Museum exhibitions and offer audiences the opportunity to interact with songwriters, musicians, and artists. These programs feature richly layered media presentations that draw from the Museum's collection, incorporating vintage sound recordings, photos, films, and videos to create exciting learning experiences for patrons. They also allow visitors to engage directly with people who created and lived the country music story, while giving the veterans themselves a chance to speak in their own voices about their roles in the music's history. In 2017, 36,510 individuals attended 172 public programs. Programs featured songwriters, instrumentalists, artists, and business executives, and included interviews, panels, film screenings, dance instruction, and special performances. More than 50,000 people participated in interactive educational experiences in the Fred & Dinah Gretsch Family Gallery, while visiting the Museum. Population Served,, Preserving Historic Sites: Hatch Show Print and RCA Studio B Description The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum operates two historic properties: Historic RCA Studio B, the city's oldest surviving recording studio, and Hatch Show Print, a letterpress printing firm that has designed marketing posters since Preservation of Historic RCA Studio B is made possible through a partnership between the Mike Curb Family Foundation and the Museum. In 2017, more than 100,000 visitors toured Studio B. Hatch Show Print is one of the oldest continuously-operated letterpress print shops in the United States and remains an active business today. For years its most celebrated client was the Grand Ole Opry, and the shop's output captures the evolution of country music and intertwines with its history. With a motto of preservation through production, Hatch Show Print serves a diverse, global client base as a working letterpress print shop. The Museum celebrates and preserves a uniquely American art form, protecting and interpreting a chronicle of the American musical experience rooted in Southern culture from the late 1800s to today. This collection provides the foundation for the Museum's educational mission. It serves as the basis for exhibits and programs that reach over 1 million annual visitors; the more than 85,000 unique monthly visitors who visit the Museum's website; and researchers who access files from the 80,000 plus objects in The Digital Archive. 10 Management Executive Director/CEO Executive Director Mr. Kyle Young Term Start Feb Experience Kyle Young is the Chief Executive Officer of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and directs and oversees all operations and activities of the organization, including the Museum, library, research, publications, and teaching programs. Young also oversees the museum's programming, advertising, marketing, and finances. After graduating with a BA in English from Kenyon College in 1975, he joined the Museum in Since then, his accomplishments include founding the Museum's Education Department, serving as editor of the Journal of Country Music and CMF Press, establishing presences in calendar and book publishing with major New York firms, and building the Museum's award-winning record reissue label. Named acting director in May 1998, Young led the team that created the financing, design, and construction of the downtown museum, which came in on time and under the allotted $37 million budget. After a national search, he was confirmed as director in February 1999.Along with Chairman Steve Turner, Young spearheaded the creation of a public/private partnership with the Metropolitan Government of Davidson County and Omni Hotels International to facilitate an expansion of the current facility, more than doubling its size. The expansion was made possible under Young's direction through an $87 million capital campaign. Young currently serves as an ex-officio board member for the Country Music Association and a member of Nashville's Agenda Steering Committee, and the Tennessee Tourism Committee. He also serves as a Peer Reviewer for the American Alliance of Museums. Young is an alumnus of Leadership Music and Leadership Nashville. 13 Piedmont Natural Gas Excellence in Sustainable Practices Award Center for Nonprofit Management 2018 Senior Staff Ms. Nina Burghard Title Experience/Biography Senior Vice President, Financial Services and Operations Nina Burghard joined the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum staff in 1998 as deputy director for financial services, in 2002 was promoted to vice president, financial services and operations, and in 2015 was promoted to senior vice president, financial services and operations. Burghard's first task upon joining the Museum staff was to oversee the completion of the financial package for the funding of the new museum and hall of fame construction. Burghard oversees the Museum's financial operations, including financial statement analysis; company-wide and departmental budget and cash flow preparation and analysis; and forecasting. She also oversees the Accounting Department, Human Resources Department, Maintenance Department, Information Technology Department, and Operations Department (including operational setups, housekeeping, and security) to ensure a safe, clean and accessible environment for Museum staff and visitors. Her duties include working with the Museum's Finance Committee, Board of Directors as well as outside financial institutions and advisors. She is responsible for working closely with the CEO in determining creative and proactive ways of efficiently running the business while maintaining the integrity of the Museum's mission. During her tenure at the Museum, she has formalized the budget process and monthly financial statement preparation analysis; managed the financial aspects of a $40 million capital project moving the museum from Music Row to downtown; and managed a $100 million Capital Campaign project that includes the expansion of the museum from 140,000 sq. ft. to 350,000 sq. ft. Her duties also include oversight and management of an IT department that supports the office infrastructure, operating systems for museum retail and ticketing, as well as the museum's exhibition infrastructure. She manages the staff supporting the operations and facilities for a venue that has grown from 316,000 visitors in 2002, to greater than 1 million visitors in This includes a 45% growth during Finally, she has managed an operational budget that has grown from $3 million in 1998 to approximately $30 million in 2016, while managing the HR department for a staff that has grown over 120% since 2011, and over 36% in less than two years. 13
14 Ms. Brenda Colladay Title Experience/Biography Vice President, Museum Services As Vice President of Museum Services for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Brenda Colladay administers the Museum's collection of more than 2.5 million artifacts and its online digital archive, while overseeing planning, design and installation of exhibits in its gallery space, Historic RCA Studio B, and the Taylor Swift Education Center. Previously, Colladay served as longtime museum and photograph curator for Gaylord Entertainment/Ryman Hospitality Properties, overseeing the historical collections of WSM radio, Ryman Auditorium, and the Grand Ole Opry, while developing exhibitions, books, video content, and other projects highlighting the history of the properties. Colladay led the efforts to add WSM radio's 1932 transmission tower complex and the 1974 Grand Ole Opry House to the National Parks Service's National Register of Historic places. As a freelance consultant, Colladay conducted historical research and managed period-sensitive renovations to the 1965 RCA Studio A building, which houses Music Row's longest-operating recording studio and adjacent office complex. She also served as an advisor to the Ken Burns documentary series Country Music, and consulted with country music star Marty Stuart on an upcoming museum project in Mississippi. Colladay holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas and a master's degree in public history from Middle Tennessee State University. Ms. Sharon Brawner Title Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing Experience/Biography Sharon Brawner is the Senior Vice President of the Sales & Marketing at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, one of the most visited museums in America. She has day-to-day oversight of the museum's traditional revenue-producing areas including admission ticket sales, special event sales, restaurant and catering sales, product licensing, corporate sponsorships, and the museum's retail store sales. Also operated by the museum, Brawner oversees management of Historic RCA Studio B, the home of 1,000 hits, and Hatch Show Print, one of the oldest working letterpress shops in America.Brawner also leads the museum's traditional advertising, promotions and other marketing communications including the museum's website, social media outreach, and publicity efforts. With these combined efforts, the museum welcomed over one million visitors in 2015 alone.as a marketing professional with more than 27 years of tourism/hospitality industry sales and marketing experience, Brawner initially joined the museum staff in 2001 as director of new business development. Over the course of 14+ years at the museum, she has made a significant impact on many fronts. Under her direction, ticket sales revenues have increased over 336% since From 2003 to 2015, revenue for special events have increased from over $796,000 to upwards of $14 million. From 2006 to 2015, Brawner has overseen a 94% increase in retail sales and has grown the retail presence in the museum from one store to three, in addition to an art gallery. 14
15 Ms. Lisa Purcell Title Vice President of Development, Education, and Outreach Experience/Biography Lisa Davis Purcell is Vice President of Development, Education, and Outreach for the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Purcell oversees the Museum's contributed income division, supporting the nonprofit's mission to preserve the evolving history and traditions of country music and to educate its audiences. Purcell's team executes all fundraising events and directs the Museum's philanthropic activities including grant procurement and individual, foundation, and corporate donations. Purcell is also responsible for the museum's exhibit related programs including family and public programming; signature series such as Nashville Cats, Poets and Prophets, Music Masters; and education programs like Words and Music. Prior to joining the Museum staff, Purcell served as vice president of external affairs for Hands On Nashville (HON). In this role, she directed contributed income and managed corporate relations, special events, public relations, and marketing for the organization. During Purcell's tenure, Hands On Nashville was nationally recognized for mobilizing over 150,000 volunteers who assisted the citizens of Middle Tennessee in the wake of the devastating May 2010 flood. Purcell's vast experience in the non-profit sector includes work in the program and administrative departments of the Frick Art & Historical Center, Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, Frist Center for the Visual Arts, and the Tennessee Arts Commission. She also served as a grant review panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts and worked with the T.J. Martell Foundation. Purcell holds an undergraduate and a master's degree in art history from West Virginia University and a certificate in executive leadership from Belmont University. 15
