2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, an educational institution of the Commonwealth of Virginia, shall foster through its living-history museums - Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown - an awareness and understanding of the early history, settlement, and development of the United States through the convergence of American Indian, European, and African cultures and the enduring legacies bequeathed to the nation. The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc., was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization for charitable and educational purposes in support of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and its living-history museums. The Foundation, Inc., cultivates donors, expands funding, contributes to program development, and stewards resources to strengthen the Foundation's living-history museums. Background The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation is an educational institution of the Commonwealth of Virginia that administers two living-history museums in America s Historic Triangle: Jamestown Settlement and the new American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, which recently replaced the Yorktown Victory Center. The Foundation s museums have evolved from their beginnings as tourist attractions into fully accredited educational living-history museums. Jamestown Settlement was constructed in 1957 to commemorate the 350th anniversary of America's first permanent English settlement at Jamestown. Jamestown Settlement s museum galleries and outdoor living-history areas interpret the cultures of 17th-century Virginia and the interaction of the native Powhatan Indians, the English colonists, and the Africans transported to the colony. The Yorktown Victory Center opened in 1976 as one of three bicentennial centers established by the Virginia Independence Bicentennial Commission. It was officially put under the jurisdiction of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation in Construction began in 2012 on a new museum to replace the aging Yorktown Victory Center, including new permanent gallery exhibits which debuted in October 2016 and renewed outdoor living-history areas which were completed in March 2017 in time for the museum s 13-day grand opening celebration. Impact Our core museum and education programs rely year after year on the support of private individuals, corporations, and foundations. In addition to interpretive programs and special events presented at Jamestown Settlement and the new American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, the Foundation offers curriculum-based onsite structured education programs for students, as well as educational outreach across Virginia. The Annual Fund is critical to many of our museum and education programs. Annual Fund donors provide unrestricted revenue that is not available through state funds, restricted gifts and grants, and other sources. The 2016 Annual Fund ended the year with $829,122 in cash, in-kind gifts, and event revenue, making it possible for the Foundation, Inc., to support a variety of public programs, educational activities, and exhibition needs throughout the coming year. From March 23 to April 4, 2017, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown enjoyed a 13-colonies-themed grand opening celebration that featured lectures, music, gallery tours, living history interpretation, and ceremonies honoring each colony that first forged the United States. With engaging indoor galleries that debuted in October 2016 and newly constructed outdoor exhibits, the museum now comprehensively tells the story of the founding of our nation. As of May 31, 2017, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown Campaign for Support had raised more than $14.7 million - 98% of its $15 million goal - in support of the new museum's gallery exhibits, outdoor exhibits, and educational resources, as well as the Annual Fund. The goals of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc., Board of Directors are keenly focused on growing the Annual Fund, building and conserving the collection of artifacts, forging partnerships that strengthen program and outreach initiatives, and on closely monitoring financial records. 2

4 Programs Programs Visitor Experience Description Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown are leading centers of education and tourism. Through nationally recognized living-history programs and museum galleries, they tell the stories of where and how America began. Living-history areas complement the museums exhibition galleries by involving visitors in interactive, hands-on learning. Special exhibitions and themed programs and events offer opportunities to explore topics in greater depth. While the Foundation receives partial operating support from the Commonwealth of Virginia and earns income through museum admissions, private donations made a critical difference in our ability to engage and educate the 548,341 visitors to our museums in Special exhibitions and themed programs and events were part of that visitor experience. The Foundation continued its successful program of special exhibitions at Jamestown Settlement with Clayton & Catesby: Botanical Virginia, which opened December 5, 2015 and explored documentation of native plants by naturalist Mark Catesby and botanist John Clayton in the 18 th century. A December 10, 2015 lecture, Plants of the Virginia Colony, launched a series of exhibit-themed public programs. Bartering for a Continent: How Anglo-Indian Trade Shaped America, subsequently ran from June 4 through December 10, 2016 at Jamestown Settlement. The special exhibition explored the story of trade between American Indians and English colonists, from the founding of Jamestown through the American Revolution, and the role of Virginia in the development of a new world of exchange in goods and commodities across the North American continent. Special event programming, some of which was underwritten with private funding, including an American Indian Intertribal Powwow in October 2016 and Foods and Feasts of Colonial Virginia over the Thanksgiving holiday in November 2016 complemented themes of this special exhibition. 5 Artifact Acquisition & Collections Care Description The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation collection contains more than 200,000 archaeological and non-archaeological artifacts. Thanks to private funds, seventeen artifacts were acquired during the 2016 fiscal year for exhibit in the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown s galleries, bringing the total objects exhibited at the new museum close to 500. A total of 185 new artifacts have been acquired for the new museum's galleries since July Among the objects acquired was a rare Revolution-period firearm a first model Brown Bess British infantry musket. One object was acquired for Jamestown Settlement, a teapot produced by famous Colonial Williamsburg ceramics maker Palin Thorley for the 1957 celebration of Jamestown s 350th year. The Foundation s collections policy reflects an emphasis on public education and exhibition by acquiring objects that are central to a dynamic exhibits program. All artifacts in our collection are given a high standard of care. Our conservation facilities give us the capacity to carry out the full range of collection care that is expected and required of a fully accredited institution. Budget $0.00 Education Programs Description During the academic year, Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation education programs served 271,211 students through hands-on sessions and guided tours at both museums and in outreach settings. Private grants and donations made through the Foundation, Inc., made the critical difference to thousands of Virginia schoolchildren living in under-served districts: 2,000 were able to take part in a field trip to one of our museums, and 3,318 were able to participate in an outreach program in their classroom, all at no cost to them, their teachers, or their schools. Budget $0.00 At Jamestown Settlement, students on field trips participated in structured programs where they explored the diverse cultures at Jamestown, discovered the world of the Powhatan Indians, learned about navigation and the English voyage to the New World, investigated early forms of government, and analyzed the plants and animals of early colonial Virginia. At the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, students learned about colonial life and what it was like to be a soldier in the Continental Army, explored the lifestyle of Revolutionary-era farmers, investigated techniques of colonial medicine, and discussed the American Revolution and the creation of a new nation. These programs support several of Virginia s history and social science Standards of Learning (SOLs) for Virginia Studies and United States History to The programs stimulate student interest and achievement in history and increase their ability to think critically and analytically. 5

6 American Revolution Museum at Yorktown Description As we draw near the grand opening of the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, planned for March 23 through April 4, 2017, the Jamestown- Yorktown Foundation invites its community of supporters to help finalize the new museum and its education programs. The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc., Board of Directors have set a total Campaign goal of $15 million to support gallery exhibits, outdoor exhibits, educational resources, campaign administration, and the Annual Fund. As of February 28, 2017 commitments from individuals, foundations, and organizations totaled $14.3 million, or 95% of the Campaign goal. A sense of urgency is mounting as the Foundation, Inc., seeks the remaining $700,000 from private donors to complete the Campaign for Support and finalize the remaining elements of the new museum and its educational programs by the end of the 2017 Fiscal Year. The Campaign for Support offers numerous opportunities for meaningful investment to create, sustain, and preserve the story of the American Revolution. Budget $0.00 6

9 Management Executive Director/CEO Executive Director Term Start Apr Mr. Philip G. Emerson Experience Philip G. Emerson joined the staff of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation in 1986 as director of public affairs and marketing. Following a national search, he was appointed executive director of the organization in As chief executive officer of the Foundation, a state agency that administers Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, Mr. Emerson has guided more than $89 million in capital improvements for the museums. He is currently leading efforts to build the new American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, which replaced the Yorktown Victory Center in October Exhibition galleries, living-history exhibits, and educational programs have been dramatically improved during the last decade. Mr. Emerson also played a key role in the development of statewide programs commemorating America s 400 th Anniversary in Under his direction, paid visitation to the museums had climbed by 117% percent prior to the 2007 commemoration. More than one million paid guests toured during 2007; combined paid visitation reached 548,341 in With a strong focus on education, both at its museums and through outreach programs across the state, the Foundation has become the largest provider of structured museum educational programs in the Commonwealth. Prior to joining the Foundation, Mr. Emerson was manager of public affairs and marketing at The Mariners' Museum. He also worked for the Virginia Travel Council as director of marketing, and on a part-time basis during high school and college as staff assistant in the public relations and group sales offices of Luray Caverns Corporation. A native of Luray,Virginia, Mr. Emerson is a graduate of Randolph-Macon College and the Virginia Executive Institute. He has served on numerous national, state and local boards and committees.
