2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement To honor and champion the relevance today of the life and leadership of Dwight D. Eisenhower through compelling programs and events that celebrate his legacy. Background Statement Dwight D. Eisenhower is a pivotal figure in American history and an embodiment of the American ideal. Having led the Allies to victory in World War II and laid the foundations for postwar America, Ike s legacy is an active part of our daily lives. His vision of peace, prosperity, and justice in the world offers this generation a timely and relevant example for character leadership. The Eisenhower Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, was established in 1945 after the Allied victory in Europe to honor World War II veterans and General Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1947, the Foundation opened Eisenhower s Boyhood Home and in 1954, the Museum. After President Eisenhower left the White House, the existing buildings were donated to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the Foundation raised $3.5 million to build the Eisenhower Presidential Library, which was dedicated in Today, five buildings on 22 acres constitute the Eisenhower Presidential Campus the Library, Museum, Boyhood Home, Visitors Center, and Place of Meditation. The Eisenhower Presidential Campus is a national treasure with endless possibilities. The federal government, through NARA, offers support for archival staff and campus maintenance, however, any exhibit updates, K-12 and public education programs, and community events must be funded through the efforts of the Foundation. In recent years, the Eisenhower Foundation has experienced transformational growth - advancing from a local organization to a national movement. To continue building on this momentum, the Foundation is seeking support for the Dwight D. Eisenhower: A Legacy of Leadership Capital Campaign. This Campaign will result in the exhibit renovation of the Eisenhower Presidential Museum and the expansion of IKEducation. Impact Statement 2017 Accomplishments: 1. Raised 80% of the total $11.75 million goal for the Dwight D. Eisenhower: A Legacy of Leadership Capital Campaign. This Campaign will result in the first comprehensive exhibit renovation for the Eisenhower Presidential Museum in over 45 years and the expansion of IKEducation into K-12 classrooms throughout the country. 2. Assembled the Eisenhower Presidential Museum Steering Committee, composed of Eisenhower Family members, Board members, and Foundation and Library staff members. The Committee moved into the second of three phases, the Design Phase, that is scheduled to conclude in April IKEducation served 20,000+ students and teachers in the four years since its inception. Also, a robust new website and four social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest) were launched to expand the reach of IKEducation and the Foundation. 4. The Eisenhower Foundation and Library partnered with the KSU Foundation and the K-State Libraries to host the exhibit and opening reception for Marlin Fitzwater: From Wheat Fields to White House. 5. The Eisenhower Foundation and Library partnered to launch Bret Baier s new book, Three Days in January: Dwight Eisenhower s Final Mission, and also conduct a live broadcast of his award-winning news program, FOX News Special Report with Bret Baier Goals: 1. Complete the Dwight D. Eisenhower: A Legacy of Leadership Capital Campaign by securing the remaining $2.3 million by the end of the year. 2. Complete the Design Phase and start the Implementation Phase for the Eisenhower Presidential Museum, allowing the Museum to reopen by the 75th anniversary of D-Day June 6, Implement an IKEducation Teacher Lab where teachers collaborate with museum professionals to develop curriculum to complement the renovated Eisenhower Presidential Museum. 4. Offer IKEducation programs and special public programs at the Eisenhower Presidential Campus to visitors while the Eisenhower Presidential Museum is unavailable during renovations. 2
3 Needs Statement 1. Raise the required funding, $11,750,000, for the Dwight D. Eisenhower: A Legacy of Leadership Capital Campaign to complete planned renovations for the Eisenhower Presidential Museum and increase support for IKEducation. To-date, more than 80% ($9.4 million) of the overall goal has been secured. 2. Continue recruiting a diverse group of talented and committed volunteers to assist with the Dwight D. Eisenhower: A Legacy of Leadership Capital Campaign. 3. Continue growing Ike's Field Trip Fund in order to bring more students from across the state and nation onsite to the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum for rich learning experiences. Donations to this fund are used to reimburse schools for transportation costs associated with visiting Abilene, Kansas. 4. Secure funding for the world-class exhibits, events, and programs enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home annually. 5. Generate support for the IKEducation Digital Platform, an innovative, state-of-the-art online platform that uses a mobile application to enable visitors to view historic footage, speeches, and other content within the context of the Museum. CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement This year marks 65 years since Dwight D. Eisenhower was inaugurated for the first time as President of the United States. As I reflect on 2017, and look toward 2018, I am more excited than ever to bring Ike s Legacy of Leadership to the next generation. Thanks to our generous supporters, we have raised 80% $9.4 million of our total goal for Dwight D. Eisenhower: A Legacy of Leadership a campaign to renovate the Eisenhower Presidential Museum and expand IKEducation into classrooms throughout the country. Lead gifts have been received from the Hall Family Foundation, the William T. Kemper Foundation, and the Sunderland Foundation. As the Eisenhower Foundation grows and reaches new audiences, I continue to be humbled by the generosity of our Friends of the Eisenhower Foundation. Our Friends helped the Foundation reach three major campaign goals in First, our Kansas donors met the Holm Family Five-Star Challenge, resulting in more than $500,000 for The Heart of America gallery. Then, the Friends of the Eisenhower Foundation donated more than $112,500 for Ike s D-Day Table display. Finally, the year ended with our loyal donors raising over $5,000 for Ike s Field Trip Fund to provide financial assistance to schools visiting the Eisenhower Presidential Campus. This year, in 2018, the Eisenhower Foundation has set our most important goal to date: raising $2.3 million to finish the campaign by the end of the year. Reaching this goal will ensure that the Eisenhower Presidential Museum renovation project is completed in time for the 75th anniversary of D-Day June 6, As General Eisenhower said in the Order of the Day, We will accept nothing less than full Victory! and, sitting less than 500 feet from The Place of Meditation where he is laid to rest in his World War II uniform and standard military issue casket I can only think, it is what Ike would have done. For those of you who have already made a commitment to the campaign, thank you for joining the Eisenhower Foundation in this groundbreaking, historic endeavor. The new museum exhibits will stand as a testament to Dwight D. Eisenhower and the men and women from his generation who gave so much to ensure the peace and prosperity of America. If you are considering making a commitment, I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the campaign in greater detail with you personally. 5 Programs Programs IKEducation Description Category As the triumphs of World War II and the progress and prosperity of the 1950s become a distant memory for most Americans, today s students are further removed from the period. Realizing the challenge of sharing this rich history with generations for whom Dwight D. Eisenhower s lifetime is relatively unknown, the Eisenhower Foundation developed IKEducation. The mission of IKEducation is to provide every K-12 student, either online or onsite, with an innovative educational experience that enhances their understanding of Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States and World War II Supreme Allied Commander. IKEducation has developed 31 unique programs, all of which align to national Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies and utilize primary sources from the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home. Programs are provided to visiting school groups free of charge and are facilitated by professional educators. Education, General/Other Extracurricular Arts & Culture Population Served K-12 (5-19 years),, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Since launching in fall 2013, IKEducation has served over 20,000 students and teachers onsite at the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home in Abilene, Kansas, and has developed 16 online programs that can be implemented in classrooms across the country. IKEducation students demonstrate enhanced knowledge and interest in historical topics, such as World War II and the Holocaust. Thank you letters from students include references to facts they learned from programs and gallery activities. In addition, students learn appropriate museum behavior and manners while on their field trip. Teachers consistently report through evaluations that programs fulfilled their expectations, were grade-level appropriate, and met curriculum standards. In addition, teachers frequently offer additional thanks to the IKEducation staff for their hard work and the expertise that was shared with their students. The ultimate goal of IKEducation is to inspire by example - demonstrating to student participants that where you start in life does not determine what you can accomplish. Considered to be from the wrong side of the tracks, Dwight D. Eisenhower s character, values, and diligent pursuit of a purposeful life led him from the nation s heartland to the center of the world stage as Supreme Allied Commander and President of the United States. In addition, IKEducation is designed to build audiences for the arts and cultural activities, especially among underserved populations, by introducing history and primary sources to students at an early age. Programs are designed for specific grade levels and meet students where they are academically. Through first-hand experiences with artifacts and documents, IKEducation inspires students curiosity for learning about the past, that the student will take with them into the future. 5
6 Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success IKEducation maintains extensive attendance records. Since launching in 2013, IKEducation has served over 20,000 students and teachers. Projecting a 25% increase in attendance each year, IKEducation anticipates having reached over 40,000 participants by the end of IKEducation evaluates program effectiveness through teacher evaluations. From these evaluations, teachers overwhelmingly report that: Programs fulfilled their expectations Programs met curriculum standards Programs were grade-level appropriate Programs were enjoyable overall The IKEducator facilitated the programs well The IKEducator worked well with students During the academic year, 7,753 students and teachers participated in 173 IKEducation field trips to the Eisenhower Presidential Campus. IKEducation receives numerous thank you letters from students and teachers. One elementary student wrote: "Thank you for inviding [sic] us to learn about Ike. And my three favorite things are Ike banner, Chisholm Trail, Museum Bingo." One high school student commented: Coolest history lesson ever! An elementary school teacher wrote: Everything was organized so well. I feel like every program was very informative, the kids LOVED them, and everything went along so well with our social studies standards. A middle school teacher commented: It s a once in a lifetime experience for most of the students! A high school teacher wrote: Thanks for the great program. I am looking forward to continuing to incorporate this as part of my curriculum. What IKEducation does is such a great thing for our students. Scholar Lecture Series and Library Programs Description Category The Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home hosts authors and researchers from all over the world to present at lectures. These programs make current research accessible to a broad audience. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other History & Historical Programs Population Served General/Unspecified,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success People who attend scholar lectures hosted by the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home gain knowledge about current historical research. As documents from the Library s archives continue to be declassified, new research impacts the way in which these historical events are remembered. The ultimate goal of the scholar lecture series is to foster understanding and appreciation for historical events and topics among the general public. Attendance records are maintained for programs. Since the time of day and year for each event differs, indicators for success vary. Onsite, each program is expected to draw at least 50 attendees, while offsite programs depend on the area in which the program is presented. In 2017, the Eisenhower Foundation provided support to the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, and Boyhood Home for 75 public programs that were attended by 17,758 people. 6
7 Research Travel Grant Program Description Category The Research Travel Grant Program encourages scholars to utilize the rich holdings of the Eisenhower Presidential Library to conduct research on topics that result in publication. Grants are awarded to individual researchers on a competitive basis to cover a portion of expenses traveling and while in Abilene, Kansas, using the Library s collections. Applications are accepted in the spring. Education, General/Other Library Population Served General/Unspecified,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Many scholars who receive Research Travel Grants are only able to complete their research because of the funding provided. Scholars are incredibly appreciative of grants and often credit the Eisenhower Foundation in their work. In addition, these scholars are asked to present programs and lectures about their research for the general public and, in some cases, lend their content expertise to exhibits produced by the Eisenhower Presidential Museum. The ultimate goal of the Research Travel Grant Program is to provide scholars from all over the world the opportunity to conduct research at the Eisenhower Presidential Library and produce publications based on their findings. New research and publications about Dwight D. Eisenhower honor his legacy and maintain his relevancy today. In the last year, at least 12 publications have been printed about Eisenhower. The Eisenhower Foundation receives over 25 applications from prospective grantees each year, far exceeding the number of requests that are able to be funded. Thank you for the generous travel award that made my May 2015 trip to the Eisenhower Library possible. My research trip was even more productive than I had hoped. I m busy at work on a chapter about Peopleto-People. I will be sure to keep the Foundation posted and to send copies of future publications. I greatly appreciate the honor the award conveys. Several years ago the Eisenhower Library Foundation awarded me a travel grant. As a condition of my acceptance of that grant I was required to send you a copy of any publication that was the product of my research at the Library. I am pleased to enclose a copy of my new book. In addition, in gratitude to the Foundation and in an attempt to pave the way for future scholars who will need funding to do research at the Library, I have enclosed a check to be used at the Foundation s discretion for its important educational activities. The work I did at the Eisenhower Library was an essential component in the completion of this book. 7
