Background Statement The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is a major center for music, opera, theater, and dance that opened on September 16, It is a 501 (c) 3 organization in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. The 285,000-squarefoot Kauffman Center includes two stand-alone performance halls: the 1,800-seat Muriel Kauffman Theatre that hosts opera, dance, plays, musicals and more, as well as the 1,600-seat Helzberg Hall, a venue for a wide range of musical performances from chamber music to full orchestra, jazz and pop, lectures and recitals. Our mission is to enrich the lives of communities throughout the region, country and world by offering extraordinary and diverse performing arts experiences. We accomplish this through programs, customer service and education. The Kauffman Center presents a wide range of entertainers and performances from around the world. It is the performance home for three of the region s leading performing arts organizations Kansas City Ballet, Kansas City Symphony and Lyric Opera of Kansas City. The Kauffman Center Presents series brings in performing artists at the top of their class, including Placido Domingo, Itzhak Perlman, Tony Bennett, Carol Burnette, Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, John Legend, Lily Tomlin, Jay Leno, The Chieftains, Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin. In addition, dozens of arts organizations perform at the Kauffman Center each year, including the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance, Harriman-Jewell Series, Theater League and many more. The Kauffman Center is also a popular venue for activities such as dinners, receptions, conferences, business meetings and more. In addition to the two performance halls, a number of event spaces, from the intimate to the grand, are available for rent and full-service catering is available from Bonterra Catering. 3

Impact Statement In FY 2017, 337 performances were held, attended by 459,650 individuals. Of these performances, 33 were school matinees attended by 40,448 youth. More than half of the youth received small grants from the Kauffman Center's Open Doors Transportation Fund, supporting their ability to participate. Since opening in 2011, the Kauffman Center has been visited by 2.6 million people and 246,983 youth have attended student matinees. Performances are offered by the Kauffman Center s three resident companies (Kansas City Ballet, Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Kansas City Symphony), by the Kauffman Center Presents series. The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra offers its full season here. Theater League and Harriman-Jewell Series offer partial seasons here, as does the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance. In addition, 50 other arts organizations have performed on Kauffman Center Stages, plus 60 youth organizations have performed at the annual Future Stages Festival. These numbers indicate broad engagement by arts organizations and significant support from the general public. An ongoing goal of the Kauffman Center is to find effective and efficient ways to operate, to carefully manage expenses and increase earned income to support the mission. For the sixth year in a row the Kauffman Center ended its fiscal year without an operating deficit. Other Kauffman Center goals in FY 2018 are to continue to fill the need for high quality performance space for local performing arts groups; to promote life-long enrichment and learning through the performing arts by developing opportunities that are diverse, multi-disciplinary and accessible to all ages, ethnic and cultural groups; to create and implement high quality arts experiences for adults as well as young people; to encourage the development of current and future audiences; and to attract business, conventions and tourism to the area. Needs Statement Open Doors Program: Even small donations make a difference in the lives of children and their families through a three-part arts education program: 1) The Open Doors Transportation Fund defrays school bus transportation costs; 2) The Open Doors Community Tickets Fund allows underserved children and their families to attend a live performance; and 3) the annual Future Stages Festival puts 800 youth performers from 25 arts organizations on Kauffman Center stages, attracting an audience of 5,000 each June. Operational funding: The Kauffman Center raises approximately $2.6 million annually for operations (or approximately 32% of its annual budget) from charitable donations and sponsorships. Support for the Volunteer Program: To keep operational costs low, the Kauffman Center manages a 500- person volunteer program. Expenses to recruit, train, schedule, manage, reward and support volunteers cost approximately $400,000 annually. Endowment Funding: The Kauffman Center seeks to continually build its endowment in order to provide a reliable source of annual operating funds. Contributions of cash, legacy gifts, life insurance and other planned gifts are welcomed. Kauffman Center Presents: This series of programs complements and expands upon other offerings at the Kauffman Center. To keep ticket costs low, sponsors and underwriters are sought. Board Chair Statement The Kauffman Center is an organization with one overriding goal to bring artists and audiences together. The soul of the Kauffman Center is a living tradition of great artists and extraordinary performances. It is a setting maximized for the special and shared needs of our local artists and their organizations. The Kauffman Center provides affordable access to stages and other facilities for performances, education and other activities. A strong program of arts education, offered through the Open Doors Program, is integral to our mission. Kansas City can and must nurture and educate its own artists, and the Center is solidly committed to participating in this vital endeavor. This is a building for today and for generations to come. 6 Programs Programs Open Doors Description The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is passionate about providing youth in our community opportunities to experience high quality performing arts. We also strive to reach the broadest and most diverse audience possible. This includes being proactive in reaching out to underserved youth and their families through the Open Doors program which has three components: 1. Open Doors Transportation Fund that eliminates or defrays schools bus transportation costs to student matinees 2. Open Doors Community Tickets Fund reduced or even free tickets to help local social service agencies, schools and home schools bring children and families to performances 3. Spotlight on Youth, a focus on providing opportunities for youth performers, including hosting the annual the Future Stages Festival, a free annual event that puts 800 young people on stage from 25 youth performing groups, reaching an audience of 5,000 people. Category Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other General Arts Education Population Served Adolescents Only (13-19 years),, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By In FY2018, 24,000 students will benefit from bus transportation reimbursements, 600 children and families will receive discounted or free tickets. Approximately 600 young performers from 25 youth performing groups will participate in Future Stages Festival, attended by 5,000 people. Underserved young people and families will have the ability to experience live performances. The Kauffman Center carefully tracks participation in the Open Doors program and tallies information about a number of factors. During the past six years, 257,931 students have attended 204 matinees at the Kauffman Center. Annually approximately 41,000 students attend matinees and, by providing bus transportation reimbursements, the Open Doors program makes it possible for half of these students to attend high quality, live performing arts experiences. Examples of Program Success In the school year, 47,268 students from 204 schools in 51 school districts both Kansas and Missouri attended 37 matinees. Of these numbers, 25,987 received bus transportation reimbursements. Sixty-six percent of these students came from Title I schools. Title I designation is a poverty indicator set by the US government, meaning that at least 40% of students at a school qualify for free or reduced lunch. In the school year through the Community Tickets Fund, 3,893 students received free tickets to four performances hosted by the Kauffman Center: three National Geographic matinees and performance featuring Black Violin. In addition, nearly 800 youth and families received free tickets to 14 different performances at the Kauffman Center. These results indicate that the Open Doors program plays a significant role in making performing arts experiences accessible to diverse audiences around our community, with a strong focus on youth. 6

Kauffman Center Presents Description Category The Kauffman Center takes on the role of presenter by offering its signature Kauffman Center Presents series that brings to Kansas City artists and ensembles that represent the range and diversity of performing arts experiences in the 21st Century. Performers in this series are carefully selected to complement and expand upon other programming offered at the Center, both by our resident organizations, as well as other presenting organizations. Rounding out the series is the National Geographic Live! series that brings exceptional scientists, photographers and explorers to Kansas City to share their experiences with local audiences. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Performing Arts Population Served General/Unspecified,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success The Kauffman Center Presents series will offer at least 15 presentations in FY18. Audiences in Kansas City will have access to high quality performing arts experiences that promote life-long enrichment and learning; opportunities will be diverse, multidisciplinary and accessible to all ages, ethnic and cultural groups. Staff collect data and information on all Kauffman Center Presents programming, including artists, art discipline and attendance. A survey is conducted after each Kauffman Center Presents program, gathering feedback on the performance as well as demographic data that helps to inform future programming. In FY17, 23 Kauffman Center Presents performances and presentations were offered (including four student matinees), with approximately 28,000 people attending. Artists included Art Garfunkel, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Black Violin, Brian Wilson, Culture Club, David Koz, David Sanborn, George Benson, Kenny G, George Winston, Kansas, Lampedusa, Michael McDonald, Boz Scaggs, Patti LaBelle, Shawn Colvin, Steve Earle, and The Oak Ridge Boys. National Geographic explorers, photographers and filmmakers made 9 presentations, including three student matinees attended by 3,500 young people. A matinee for Black Violin was sold out with 1,663 youth in attendance. More than 2.5 million visitors have attended an event at the Kauffman Center since According to VisitKC president and CEO, "The Center has helped to draw national and international visitors to Kansas City through its world-class performances. The Center has also assisted in attracting conventions to our city. It has elevated our skyline, the arts and culture scene and the Crossroads Arts District. The vibrancy of our arts and cultural community is one of the top 10 reasons more than 24 million people visit Kansas City each year." 7

Support Resident Company Performances Description Category Supporting the work of the three resident companies (Kansas City Ballet, Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Kansas City Symphony) is a major role of the Kauffman Center. This includes back-of-house technical support, managing the patron experience front-of-house, coordinating marketing efforts and managing a box office consortium for ticketing. The Kauffman Center also raises funds to underwrite the cost of resident company performances so that they can offer affordable arts experiences to patrons. Their success and financial health are critically linked to the overall stability of the Kauffman Center in these important ways: 1.The resident companies receive first choice of performance dates 2. The total annual rent expense for each resident company is less than half of the going market rate 3. Resident company performances comprise approximately 67% of the Center s performance calendar but the rental fees they pay represent only about 10% of the Center s total revenue. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Performing Arts Population Served Adults,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Resident companies are able to schedule and deliver full seasons to audiences. Resident company success is supported by an expertly run, technologically excellent performing space that provides staffing and resources that support artistic excellence at every turn. Monthly meetings with resident companies provides a venue to discuss common issues and concerns. Close working relationships by team members at every level (from box office to executives) monitor relationships constantly. From a 2016 Kansas City Star article: "Jeffrey J. Bentley, executive director of the Kansas City Ballet, said that the last five years have been a boon not just for his company, but the Kauffman's other two resident artist groups, the Lyric Opera and the Kansas City Symphony. 'Our ticket revenue has moved from $1.5 million to over $4 million a year in singleticket sales,' Bentley said. 'It's made us much more competitive on the international scale in terms of drawing talented dancers, talented ballet masters and choreographers into the city.' Frank Byrne, executive director of the Symphony also said the venue has lived up to its promise. 'When we moved in we had a mountain of hopes and dreams on how it work work out and I can honestly say it has exceeded our expectations.'" 8

Support the Work of Local Arts Organizations Description Category In addition to the resident companies, 50 other arts organizations have rented the center to showcase their own arts programming over the past five years This includes groups such as Theater League, Harriman-Jewell series, Friends of Chamber Music, Kansas City Chorale and Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, plus new ones every year. The Kauffman Center's roles include determining the arts organizations needs (such as ticketing marketing and related event support), providing back-of-house technical support and managing the patron experience front-of-house. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Performing Arts Population Served Other Named Groups,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success The Kauffman Center benefits from increased facility use (and building rental income). The renting organizations benefit from the excellent performance space and ability to present their arts in a state-of-the-art facility. Organizations that rent the facility will have a positive experience at the Kauffman Center and indicate that the services they receive have helped them to present their art well and build new audiences. Regular meetings with renting organizations provide a venue to discuss common issues and concerns. Close working relationships by team members at every level (from box office to executives) monitor relationships constantly. The UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance performs three concerts per year at the Kauffman Center, saying "Only at the Kauffman Center does the Conservatory have the ability to perform full orchestral and choral works. The outstanding acoustics of Helzberg Hall allow our excellent students and faculty to be showcased at their best, and positions the Conservatory with the finest professional arts organizations in the city and nation. No other hall in Kansas City can give our students this kind of experience." Each year approximately 500 UMKC students have the chance to perform on the Kauffman Center's technically excellent stages, having a professional level experience, before audiences as large as 1,400 people. 9

Volunteer Program Description Category The Kauffman Center s 550-member volunteer team provides critical services for the organization. Volunteers work 4-6 hour shifts as ushers, ticket-scanners, information-providers and coat-check workers at performances, ensuring a high quality patron experience. There are an average of 1,200 volunteer usher shifts per month. Volunteers also work as greeters during open hours and perform administrative functions in Center offices. Trained tour guides offer public tours for visitors that are scheduled when the facility is not being used for a performance. A fulltime volunteer manager supervises this program. Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other General Arts Funding Population Served Adults,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Each year 500 volunteers will be "active," meaning that they volunteer an average of once a month. Patron Services needs for hired crowd systems staffing will remain steady or decrease (a goal of 85% of monthly shifts are filled by volunteers instead of paid, part-time employees). Front-of-house activities such as ushering, greeting, ticket taking and coat check will be provided primarily by volunteers (goal = 85% of shifts are filled by volunteers annually). Volunteers will be friendly, proactive representatives for the Kauffman Center and put a warm, friendly face on the patron experience. The Patron Services team collects data on the volunteer program, including names, addresses, work preferences, hours worked as well as attendance. Budgeting for part-time crowd systems staff is monitored closely. Any increase can indicate a decline in volunteer hours and a need to redouble efforts to build the volunteer team. In FY16, volunteers logged 44,000 hours of service, an equivalent value of $1 million, using formulas provided by the Independent Sector. There were 550 active volunteers (meaning that they had worked at least one shift during the past six months). Surveys conducted of patrons indicates high satisfaction with the visitor experience, in large part due to the support provided by volunteer ushers and greeters. CEO Comments The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is both an iconic structure and a key component of Kansas City's exceptional $4.5 billion urban renaissance. However, it is much more than a building. The Kauffman Center fills a documented need for high quality performance space for local performing arts groups. The venue nurtures, cultivates and supports performing artists and the creative process through its state-of-the-art facility, providing an artist experience that is on par with that of major performing arts centers around the world. The existence of the Kauffman Center has already played a role in elevating the quality and expanding the arts offerings offered by long-standing, local arts groups. The Kauffman Center promotes life-long enrichment and learning through the arts by developing opportunities that are diverse, multi-disciplinary and accessible to all ages, ethnic and cultural groups, through projects with performing artists, arts institutions and other organizations. A vibrant performing arts center encourages the development of current and future audiences and patrons. The Kauffman Center builds audiences for a wide range of arts and culture organizations in Kansas City and the Midwest, increases earned revenue and private contributions for regional arts and plays a role in attracting business, conventions and tourism to the area. 10
