1 For Immediate Release January 30, 2018 OPERA.CA ANNOUNCES TWO RECIPIENTS OF THE 2018 NATIONAL OPERA DIRECTORS AWARD RICHARD COOK OF EDMONTON OPERA & BRUCE MUNRO WRIGHT OF VANCOUVER OPERA Toronto, ON Opera.ca, the national association for opera in Canada, is proud to honour two outstanding opera company board members; Richard Cook of Edmonton Opera, the 2018 recipient of the Opera.ca National Opera Directors Recognition Award, and Bruce Munro Wright of Vancouver Opera, honoured with the National Opera Directors Emeritus Award. In its tenth year, the National Opera Directors Recognition Award highlights the tenets of good governance, celebrates models of volunteer excellence, and raises the bar for board director commitment. The National Opera Directors Emeritus Award is being made for the first time in 2018 and highlights extraordinary contributions by a board member, not only to their opera company, but to the opera sector at large. Opera.ca is delighted to recognize Richard Cook as the 2018 recipient of the National Opera Directors Award stated Christina Loewen, Executive Director of Opera.ca Board members of opera companies play a significant role in the success of their company, and Richard s fouryear transformational chairmanship of Edmonton Opera during a time of great change and turmoil, has ensured a solid foundation for its future artistic success and community engagement. On Bruce Munro Wright s bestowment of the National Opera Directors Emeritus Award, Board Chair Cheryl Hickman said: We are delighted to present, for the first time, this emeritus award to Bruce Munro Wright, long-serving Chair of the National Opera Directors Award Selection Committee. We celebrate and recognize his leadership, not only to Vancouver Opera, but to the opera field at large in Canada and in North America. Richard Cook joined the board of Edmonton Opera in 2012 and in 2014 stepped into the role of Chair at a precarious moment in time for the company. It was growing at an unsustainable rate, had racked up a considerable deficit, and the relationship between board and Page 1 of 5

2 management was under stress. The work of engineering a turnaround for Edmonton Opera included the hiring of a new General Director, establishing a culture of open communication and support among all levels of staff and governance, and clarifying the board s role in fundraising. In 2014, Richard was a founding member of the Sustainability Fund which currently generates over $500,000 per year. In 2015, Richard established the new Audience Development Committee comprised of board members, staff, artists and members of the community to seek out new collaborations and be more community-minded. During a time of cost-cutting, he established critical buy-in from the board for its new Opera Centre, championing the space as a future anchor for Edmonton Opera s new focus on community engagement. The new Centre is a source of community pride, housing a rehearsal hall, scenic shop, storage, box office and administrative offices. Four years later, Edmonton Opera is an outward-facing, engaged member of its community, anchored by a new consolidated Opera Centre, and have retired a sizable deficit. Richard s honesty, passion, and support were instrumental in helping us ask difficult questions and re-examine Edmonton Opera s mission. We remain in the business of creating incredible artistic experiences, but our new focus on community engagement has revitalized the company stated his nominator, Tim Yakimec, General Director of Edmonton Opera. Vancouver lawyer, philanthropist, art collector, and cultural leader Bruce Munro Wright has been an extraordinary donor and volunteer for many years with Vancouver Opera. He served as Chair of the Vancouver Opera Board of Directors from 2006 to 2008, years in which the company produced exciting programming, balanced its budgets, and galvanized board members around many special fundraising initiatives. He then served as Chair of the Vancouver Opera Foundation Board of Trustees from 2012 to 2016, where he guided the transformation of the Vancouver Opera Foundation into an organization with a stronger mandate to support the operations of the Vancouver Opera Association, growing the capital by almost 50%. Beyond his contributions to Vancouver Opera, Bruce has also distinguished himself as an exemplary sector volunteer for Opera.ca over the years, willingly and generously chairing the selection committee for the National Opera Directors Awards, participating in many Opera.ca colloquia, sector meetings and conferences, the Opera America Trustee Forum, and giving generously to the Power of 100 campaign. It is in this dual-impact role, both local and sectoral, that he is recognized with the National Opera Directors Emeritus Award. Page 2 of 5

3 "Bruce Munro Wright's generosity and passion for the arts is an inspiration to all of us. As Chair of the Vancouver Opera Association Board of Directors and of the Vancouver Opera Foundation Board of Trustees, Bruce Munro Wright's stewardship saw the company go from strength to strength. Even after stepping down from the boards, he remains an important friend to our organization," said Kim Gaynor, General Director of Vancouver Opera. Opera.ca s commitment to recognizing excellence in governance is shared with sister association OPERA America through their National Opera Trustee Recognition Award, in which a single honouree is chosen from each of the four OPERA America budget categories. In 2018 OPERA America is pleased to honour Carol F. Henry, Los Angeles Opera, R. Jamison Williams, Michigan Opera Theatre, Henry Fogel, Chicago Opera Theater, and John Serrage, Opera Maine. Mr. Cook and Mr. Wright will be recognized alongside the four U.S. recipients of the National Opera Trustee Award at a special dinner in New York City in February About Opera.ca Opera.ca is the national association for opera companies and professionals in Canada. It seeks to create and sustain an environment that makes opera central to Canadian life. It works with members across the country to advance the interests of Canada s opera community and create greater opportunity for opera audiences and professionals alike. 4 Richard Cook Richard became Chair of the board of Edmonton Opera a brief four years ago, during a period of extreme financial distress. Although the company had a cash shortfall of approximately $1.7 million, the board and staff, with the assistance of a generous donor, rallied to move the company forward by eliminating the debt, developing improved management practices, and maintaining a high level of artistic achievement with a focus on local productions using predominantly Canadian singers. During his period as Chair, he was also able to assist the management team in the realization of a dream for a production, rehearsal and office facility now located in an industrial park in Edmonton and known as the Edmonton Opera Centre. He has a long affinity for opera, attending his first live performance in 1969 Lucia di Lammermoor with Beverly Sills in an Edmonton Opera production. His love of opera continued as a young man when he performed as a supernumerary in various roles in several operas including the role of Soldier #4, fainting on stage during the Mad Scene (Lucia) his final role with Edmonton Opera. At least on stage! Richard Cook is a native of Edmonton, Alberta where he recently retired after a 30-year career with Grant MacEwan University during which he held a variety of positions including Dean of Performing, Visual and Communication Arts and Dean of Fund Development. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Alberta, and an MBA from Athabasca University. Bruce Munro Wright Bruce Munro Wright is the local managing partner of MLT LLP, Western Canada s Law Firm, where he has a securities, M&A and business law practice. He is a graduate of U of T (B.Comm), Osgoode Hall (LLB) and London Business School (MBA), with an ICD.D from the Institute of Canadian Directors. Bruce is active in the Vancouver arts sector. Locally, he has supported Early Music Vancouver, Ballet BC, the Page 4 of 5

5 Contemporary Art Gallery, the Vancouver Symphony and the Vancouver Chamber Choir, among others arts institutions, as trustee or assisting in development activities. He s held a number of senior roles including, Chair of the Vancouver Art Gallery ( ), and Chair of the Vancouver Opera and its Foundation, and is the current President of Health Arts Society. On the national front, he is the incoming Chair of Frontier College and serves on the Trustees Forum of Opera America. Bruce has a background in music performance, with ARCTs in piano and French horn. He is an ardent supporter of the BC arts scene, and young performers and visual artists. He is also an avid art collector and is often involved as a panelist, adjudicator or committee member in various arts related forums. Page 5 of 5
