2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Statement The Massachusetts Institute for a New Commonwealth (MassINC) is an independent think tank and publisher of CommonWealth magazine. Our mission is to stimulate nonpartisan debate, shape policy and advance a public agenda that supports the growth of the middle class. MassINC's impact is achieved through research, journalism, and civic forums. Background Statement MassINC was founded in in 1996 by Tripp Jones, Mitchell Kertzman, and Michael Gritton who, together with a small group of leaders from the civic, business and policy-making fields, believed that the policy process in Massachusetts was missing accurate, thorough and unbiased information and research about the challenges facing the middle class.massinc was built around the conviction that better outcomes would be achieved if policy makers and opinion leaders were armed with credible data and analysis about key issues surrounding quality of life in Massachusetts. Credible, unbiased, fact-based analysis have thus been cornerstones of the MassINC strategy and have made us the organization of record for policy analysis and civic engagement. Impact Statement Past year1. Published Rebuilding Renewal: An Analysis of State Investment in Gateway Cities and a Work Plan for Delivering Transformative Development2. Held the 3rd annual Gateway Cities Innovation Awards and released Leading Together: Four Case Studies of Successful Gateway Cities Initiatives3. Held the third annual MA Criminal Justice Reform Coalition policy summit and released a series of five Policy Briefs examining Justice Reinvestment in Massachusetts4. CommonWealth magazine saw record high readership, closely following issues such as transportation and energy - as well as launching a new weekly podcast5. Introduced five new members to the MassINC Board of Directors Current Year1. Broaden the impact of CommonWealth magazine's independent journalism in digital media2. Nurture and promote young leaders in Massachusetts, specifically the Gateway Cities, through our Young Leaders profile series3. Host a series of statewide events Needs Statement 1. 5 CommonWealth magazine Description CommonWealth magazine covers politics, policy, ideas, and civic life, with an emphasis on investigative reporting, in-depth analysis, and political mapping. It also provides a forum for policy makers and politicians to set forth their opinions. The print magazine comes out four times a year while the online magazine, commonwealthmagazine.org, allows us to continue our coverage between issues. To expand its audience, CommonWealth's content is often shared with several local media outlets. In addition to our improved online presence, CommonWealth continues to publish quarterly issues, sent to a subscriber list of nearly 1, of the most influential figureheads in Massachusetts politics, business, and media. CommonWealth magazine is approaching its 16th year of publication and award-winning long form civic journalism and investigative reporting. 6 Management CEO/Executive Director Executive Director Mr. Gregory Torres Term Start June 27 Experience Greg Torres joined MassINC in June of 27. As President, he is responsible to the Board of Directors for setting policy, leading fund raising activities, and guiding program operations. Greg also serves as publisher of CommonWealth magazine, now a leader in investigative journalism. Greg began his career working with juvenile delinquents in the early 197s in Boston. As the de-institutionalization movement proceeded, Greg was instrumental in developing community-based programs for adolescents with his work at the Massachusetts Committee on Criminal Justice. As Assistant Secretary for Criminal Justice under Governor Michael Dukakis, he led reform efforts in the adult correctional system as well. From Greg served as Chief of Staff to the Massachusetts Senate Committee on Ways and Means.In 1992 Greg joined the MENTOR Network as Senior Vice President, having served as a founding board member in 198. Assuming the role of President and CEO from , Greg led the growth of MENTOR from a regional company providing services primarily to children into a national organization serving people of all ages in a wide variety of settings, now operating in thirty-seven states. Having retired as CEO, Greg continues to chair the board of the MENTOR Network.Greg is a graduate of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (MPA 1982) and of St. Vincent s College in Latrobe PA (BA 1971). Greg chaired the board of Roca, a Chelsea-based organization from Senior Staff Ms. Lauren Louison Title Experience/Biography Chief Operating Officer Lauren has more than 25 years experience in the private, public and non-profit sectors helping organizations define, align and implement their strategic business, advocacy, fundraising and communications goals. Prior to joining MassINC, Lauren was a senior vice president at Solomon McCown & Company where she founded and led the public affairs practice serving local and national clients including New Profit Inc, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Nellie Mae Education Foundation and the Boston Municipal Research Bureau. Lauren s career has included leading the national, urban policy think tank CEOs for Cities, serving as chief of staff to the vice president for Government, Community and Public Affairs at Harvard University and director of Planning and Research for the Boston Police Department. She began her career as staff to Boston Mayor Kevin H. White. 6
7 Mr. Bruce Mohl Title Experience/Biography Editor, CommonWealth magazine Bruce is the editor ofcommonwealthmagazine, the quarterly journal of Massachusetts politics and civic life.mohl came tocommonwealthfrom theboston Globe,where he spent nearly 3 years in a wide variety of positions covering business and politics. He covered the Massachusetts State House and served as theglobe s State House bureau chief in the late 198s. He also reported for theglobe s Spotlight Team, winning a Loeb award in 1992 for coverage of conflicts of interest in the state s pension system. He served as theglobe s political editor in 1994, managing the coverage of the state election and the campaign for U.S. Senate between Mitt Romney and Senator Edward Kennedy. Most recently, Mohl was theglobe s consumer reporter, writing the weekly Consumer Beat column and covering a wide range of policy and pocketbook issues.mohl is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
