Nomination for Dr. William McGregor MHA 2013 Innovation in Healthcare Award As a young boy, William McGregor once hooked a wagon to his tricycle, stocked it with first-aid supplies and rode through his neighborhood seeking patients. Decades later, as a highly respected physician and Chairman of the Benefis Health System Board, Doctor Bill has not lost his enthusiasm for healthcare. Dr. McGregor began his long service on the Benefis Health System Board in He became Vice Chair of the Board on January 1, 2009 and assumed the Chairman role on January 1, He describes his medical career as a life-long honor, whether serving in the operating room or at the board room table. Benefis has seen tremendous growth and change during Dr. McGregor s Board tenure, including the opening of the state-of-the-art South Tower in 2009, the opening of the Orthopedic Center of Montana in 2010, the grand opening of The Grandview at Benefis retirement community this fall, and dramatic growth in outpatient care, with Benefis Medical Group now employing nearly 100 physicians and mid-level providers. Dr. McGregor s leadership abilities and medical expertise played a guiding role in all of these pivotal accomplishments for our community health system. Throughout the growth and changes of the past 15 years he has been a champion for Benefis, a great spokesperson for healthcare in general and understanding and supportive of the need to change how we deliver care and reduce costs. The time during which Dr. McGregor has served as Chair also has not been without controversy at Benefis Health System and within Great Falls as our organization has adjusted to a changing healthcare landscape both locally and nationwide. He has handled that controversy with style and grace. And Dr. McGregor s influence has reached well beyond Great Falls. After transitioning to part-time retirement, he continued through spring 2012 to hold a voluntary consulting clinic at Blackfeet Community Hospital, an institution he served for 37 years. In 1993 he was given the honorary Blackfeet name Chief Sun Buffalo.
Also included in Dr. McGregor s community contributions are service for 12 years as a Montana Commissioner on the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education and for nine years on the University of Great Falls Board of Trustees, the last two as chairman. Dr. McGregor served actively in the United States Public Health Service and remains a reserve medical officer with the rank of lieutenant commander. Dr. McGregor s interests have included vascular surgery, burn care and trauma management. He was among the first instructors in the nation trained to teach the American College of Surgeon s Advanced Trauma Life Support Course. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a founding member of the Northern Plains Vascular Surgical Society, and a member of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery. Dr. McGregor s medical expertise, leadership and passion for our patients define his service to Benefis, our community and our region. It is our great pleasure to nominate Dr. William R. McGregor as Trustee of the Year.

MHA--An Association of Montana Health Care Providers 2013 Trustee of the Year Award Rick Hays -- St. Peter s Hospital Rick Hays has been a member of the St. Peter s Hospital Board of Directors since 2004, serving as Chair of the Board and a member of the Executive, Quality, Finance, Planning, and Community Relations committees. During this time, Hays also served as State President of Qwest until he retired in Hays has been an outstanding Board member for St. Peter s and has enhanced its mission by continually seeking ways to improve St. Peter s ability to serve community residents, and has also made tremendous contributions towards St. Peter s recent expansion project and CEO transition. Hays stepped up and became Board Chair for the third time in 2011 when two previous chairs resigned during a tumultuous and challenging year between physicians, the CEO, and the Helena community. St. Peter s Board, under the direction of Hays, in early 2012 accepted the resignation of St. Peter s CEO following more than a year of arbitration between physicians, staff and the community. Hays volunteered more than full-time attending numerous meetings, negotiations, public forums and other events while continuously portraying a positive image for St. Peter s during this extremely difficult time. Hays also worked tirelessly on a recent major expansion project to ensure that the Hospital is able to meet the medical needs of the Helena area s growing and aging population. Under Hay s leadership, in May 2008 St. Peter s opened a $54 million new patient care wing following five years of construction. The state-of-the-art building features all private patient rooms with spectacular views of the surrounding mountain ranges. The project also included a new Hospital main entrance to align with a new interstate interchange that routes traffic through commercial areas. During his tenure, Hays led the Hospital Board in opening a new physician clinic to provide better access for patients in Helena s North Valley and in building a medical office building across from the hospital that houses 30 physicians and specialists and ancillary services. Hays wanted to ensure that the project enabled St. Peter s to provide services in a more cost-effective way by utilizing existing assets. During his tenure, Hays conceptualized and helped organize St. Peter s Capitol Classic Fun Run and Back to School Health Fair to promote fitness for area youth. Now in its sixth year, the popular event has grown to inspire more than 500 youth and their families to be healthier and more active.
A dedicated community volunteer, Hays also serves Helena Food Share by delivering commodities to homebound elders in the area. He is chair of the Montana Taxpayer s Association, and a member of the Helena Ambassadors, Hometown Helena, Montana State University s President s Advisory Council, and Tech Ranch of Bozeman. Hays is past president and a long-time board member of the Montana Business Assistance Corporation and has assisted the Helena Education Foundation, Friendship Center, and YWCA with fund raising and other special projects. In addition, he volunteers with restoration projects at Glacier and Yellowstone national parks.

Michelle is broker/owner of Maverick Realty in Livingston, and has been a board member since She is a lifelong resident of Park County, and has been an active Realtor since When asked why she serves on the Livingston HealthCare board, Becker replies, "To continue to contribute to the health of the hospital and to be effective and helpful in accomplishing the vision of Livingston HealthCare." Michelle was Chair of the Personnel Committee and appointed Vice Chair in She was then elected Chairman/President of the Board of Directors in 2004 and has served in that role and as Chair of the Executive Committee since. These accomplishments have helped Livingston HealthCare progressively adapt to the many changes in the industry while providing an invaluable service to the residents of Park County. On a personal note, Michelle has brought a level of sincerity and energy to our organization. Although a very busy woman, she will always selflessly take the time to make a phone call or meet for lunch when her wisdom or advice is needed. She is always smiling!
